Style: Belgian Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This beer is 6.2% when released in Europe, US labels say 6.9% due to labeling laws.

Many agree that the somewhat unpractical addition of this sometimes undesired yeast strain is what grants Orval its age worthiness, not to mention unique aroma, making it a one of the few beers worth cellaring.

Might as well drink this from a champagne flute. Effervescent, dry, with a soapy soda head. Peach cobbler aroma. Amber color. Some interesting flavor, a bit of licorice but mostly light apricot, but all pretty subtle. Has a mineral feel that leans toward champagne rather than beer, and gives it some funk.

This is a brew that smells interesting, but disappoints in taste.

The look is cloudy and golden. The head is white and fluffy. Fine bubbles that don't linger.

The smell is Earthy, Citrusy, and slightly spicy. No surprises here. It's a Trappist ale, and it's going to smell like citrus and spice.

The taste reminds me of wet sand, and is where this brew begins to disappoint. A nice dry finish with hints of fruit, but after the dirty up-front taste, it was too late to redeem the flavour.

Mouthfeel is remarkably like champagne, just slightly more gritty. A boozy evaporating sensation follows.

Overall, I found Orval to be overrated. Maybe what I had wasn't stored properly, as I bought it in a store that exposes the beer display to a lot of light. It's hard to be charitable, though. Orval tastes like sand.

From a 330ml bottle, dated 06/06/18. Served in a tulip.

Pours a clear copper-amber with a big, bubbly head. Retention is excellent, leaving a thick, foamy cap and spotty lacing.

Clean, sharp aroma of brett yeast and lemon soda.

Tastes of pain de champagne, mushrooms and lemon soda. Funky, earthy yeastiness, mildly tangy with baking soda-like dryness.

Feel is feathery, tongue-drying, light bodied with bright, tingly carbonation.

Overall, a bright and cheerful, light and refreshing treat. Near-perfect for what it is.

look is beautiful poured into an Orval challis.
smell of malty fresh bread is amazing
taste starts with malt and yeast then gives way to subtle hops
feel is slightly carbonated, smooth
a fabulous beer. a beer that makes me happy to be a beer drinker.

Pours a very appealing, glowing, hazy amber with a tall, fluffy white head.

Floral and fruity in the nose, tart apple, pear, and citrus. Some yeasty breadiness balances that, a bit like sourdough bread.

Taste is complex and flavor packed. You get the fruit as in the smell, tart, crisp apples and pear sweetness. Dry chardonnay grapes and a combination the yeast funk and cloves come through after that, A nice bitterness from the hops remains throughout, but does not overpower at any point, just accentuates the brew at each stage.

Mouthfeel is effervescent, yet smooth, medium-light bodied and pleasant.

Overall, a great example of a Trappist ale.

Bottled on 8/11/17; best before 8/11/22

Pours a deep, cloudy golden copper with a massive white head, bubbly, fizzy, soapy, and sticky; excellent retention with thin, sticky foam providing a lasting film around the glass.

Aromas of pear, grape must, yeasty, slightly spicy banana, funky wood, composting fruits, and a general earthiness permeating throughout; enjoyable depth to this one.

Taste of grape must, yeasty barnyard funk, flairs of bubble gum, and floral, dense herbal and earthy root notes; clove, wood chips, brown sugar, dried banana peel, and light yeastiness smooth the finish; wish it would’ve lasted just a bit longer, but a well-devised and yet easy profile all the same.

Mouthfeel shows a smooth, even-keeled body balancing bigger, somewhat unrestrained carbonation that just works out nicely; very dry overall, but with a well-bodied effervescence showing through to the finish.

Excellent depth of profile to this one, with my only real complaint being a short finish. Otherwise, this is upper-tier stuff, and just an enjoyable, smooth-drinking, and comforting trappist ale. I'd love to see how this ages.

Beautiful golden amber color with huge pillowy head. Good floraly sweet notes in the nose. Fruity and honey notes mixed with slight bitter. Apple note hits me in the middle and lingers on the finish. Bubbly, tart mouth feel. Overall excellent beer! There's a lot going on in this beer and I'm not sure my palette is advanced enough to pick it all up. Very good! Will definitely revisit this beer in the future.

Pours deep amber gold and slightly hazy. Phenolic spicy yeast with hints of citrus and a wet hay on the nose. Poured slow with huge carbonation. Thin bodied with very subtle sweetness. A touch of specialty malts, orange marmalade, floral honey. Finishes slightly bitter tart but crisp. Overall a nice easy drinking Belgian beer.

Prisco's Market - Aurora, IL

Bottled: 4/27/16

Orval looks exactly like what it is, your classic Belgian pale ale. The body leans amber with a caramel hue. Tiny bubbles rush to the surface from every spot of the glass which bolsters the amazingly creamy, silky smooth foam. That head bubbles up immediately on the pour like Alka Seltzer. The foam is going nowhere anytime soon and will be sitting over a finger high when the entirety of the beer is gone. This beer looks just about perfect.

Ah, yes. The nose is wild and wonderful. Damp stone with a slight metallic edge start it off. There are gobs of wildflowers present, handfuls of dandelions. A doughy malt base whispers in the background while musty pear and green apple bring more depth to the middle. As amazing as that foam looks and holds on, it is a little detrimental to the nose, squashing it a bit.

The flavor is big, bright and vibrant. Soda bread with a drizzle of caramel make up the base. Green apple and pear pop up in the middle and push through the finish along with that wildflower accompaniment. That pear and apple get musty closer to the finish, which is pretty appetizing. A touch of spicy booze on the finish wraps it up. Good depth and flow. Not as wild as the nose suggested.

The feel is up there as only the best of the Belgians can seem to manage. It's immediately frothy and airy as it hits the tongue which adds on overall lightness, obviously. There's enough prickliness to the bubbles that they seem to awaken the tongue. A quick flash of acidity runs through and leaves its mark. The finish dries out slowly and leaves you wanting more. This is maddeningly easy to drink.

Oravl is a classic for a reason. It's funky and unique stepping out of the box when it comes to the other Trappist Breweries. This one is all its own. It's bright and well rounded with a bit of funk and a whole bunch of character. This beer needs to be in my fridge much more often.
