Notes / Commercial Description:
This beer is 6.2% when released in Europe, US labels say 6.9% due to labeling laws.

Many agree that the somewhat unpractical addition of this sometimes undesired yeast strain is what grants Orval its age worthiness, not to mention unique aroma, making it a one of the few beers worth cellaring.

Poured from a bottle into a Chimay goblet. Amazing fluffy head with good lacing. A beautiful looking beer.

Citrus and funk in the nose. I am guessing Brett yeast. Interesting smell that is very enticing.

Unfortunately, it doesn't show up much in the flavor. Not much happening. Tastes Belgian, but no refundable character. Lots of carbonation and alcohol.

A good beer. Glad I experienced it, but probably wont buy it again, especially for the price.

Had a bottle of this at an establishment in Hamilton the other day as it was something they carried and I've been eager to try.

Served cool into an Orval tulip.

Appearance - Dark honey and copper color with 2.5 fingers of head that created a mountain overflowing the glass. Fortunately none of the head spilled onto the table. The head is just pillowy off-white clouds and lingered for a long while and left some beautiful lacing. Very delicate and meticulous looking. Very hazy as well.

Smell - Honey, light and floral, slight caramel sweetness. Hints of melon as it warmed a bit too. Pretty impressive so far.

Taste - The taste is nice.... but to describe it is difficult. There's not really a whole lot of easily definable tastes here, every sip seems a bit different and the taste is fleeting. It has a bit of a orange undercurrent with a bit of a dank earthiness. Bit of a bitter finish that seems most reminiscent of a Tripel rather than anything else. Quite tasty, but because of the lightness and fleeting flavors it's hard for me to score this any higher.

Mouthfeel - Smooth with a richness that is there but retains the very light character established with the other senses. Medium carbonation is also good here.

Overall - Very glad I tried it, if was available at LCBO or TBS I would consider picking this up again, however it does not seem to be frequently available and at the price tag it comes with, I would rather drink other beers when out, or buy beer in a similar vein at LCBO and get 3-4 times as much. However, I recommend a try as I seem to echo some of the reviews in that this beer is tough to nail down and has flavors that vary from bottle to bottle.
