Ad Astra Per Aspera. Having used Oklahoma all up, I got out of Tulsa early and headed up Northwestish to where Wichita is for the lunch (read: drink) hour. Found the Standard in the middle of town, kind of, you know, Central, on a residential strip in a mixed use neighborhood. Parked a sweet Slander spot and rolled on up…

Waded through the seating and plants to the rear of the room bar; boomerang shaped stainless steel panel topped nailed, alt colored horizontal plank base, and a concrete foot ledge of sorts. Seating for 8 on bright orange metal chairs. 12 tap panel with non-descript handles on the lime green barback with scrabble letter tiles marking above. Shorty glassware to both sides and larger glassware in all sizes & shapes shelved below, and growls down on the bottom. GABF medals dangle from a large lit marquee above annoyingly listing beer names only with no style context, ABV’s, serving sizes, or pricing. A single flat screen to the left over a kegerator to the left with guest taps, and a Kombucha, maybe, on a pair of 2 tap cylinders. And a crowler crimper to the right, with a cooler full of ’em behind the bar just around the bend below an obligatory Kansas state flag mounted. Merch, a ‘get your own damn water’ tap, and coolers with bottles, crowls, pickles, rubs, & ciders off the bar.

It’s something of a cavernous room. Concrete floors and arched black high ceilings with skylights & ductwork. Walls painted off-whiteish gray, black, & lime green, a whole lot of cinder block here, and large panel roll up doors forward. Long drop alt height wood strip lined cylinder tube lamps tracing the bar and single filament pear bulbs strung across the room.

Lay down foeders with another flatscreen above it just off the entrance and the brewery behind an alt colored horizontal wood pen just past there. Barrels racked on the opposite wall with a band set up area fronting and music is happening now; not sure if that will conflict with the Chief’s 3:15pm kickoff but I guess we’ll see. And speaking of music, there are event posters for an upcoming California Guitar Trio show here, that’s pretty badass. Large (I think it’s a) moon piece up front, and another one seemingly to the rear.

10 mix & match tables high, low, squared, roundy, long shared, wood, & glass on all sorts of chairs, stools, and even some cushys with a couch over there (me, pointing). There’s also an outside seating pen running an 'L' around the front & side of the building, holding some dozen and a half picnic tables umbrella’d up. It’s quite warm out there so fuck, you know, I’m hanging inside barside.

15 beers up just now. 13 of them are house beers of which nearly half are hoppys (Girlfriend, NE Pale Ale, 5.6%; Drip Catcher, IPA, 6.7%; Wizard of Hops, IPA, 6.8%; Crossing Paths, Ghost Town Brewing collab, Farmhouse IPA, 6.4%; Style Points, DIPA, 8.5%; Hundo P. Lotus, DIPA, 7.8%), and the remainder are things sour (Arnold Palmer Yard Games, Gose, 4.8%; Pina Colada Yard Games, Pineapple & Coconut Gose, 5.5%; Bling Blau, Blueberry Gose, 5.5%; Holidome, Tropical Fruited Gose, 6.8%), and not (CSB De Luxe, Czech Pils, 4.8%; Space Clouds, Saison, 7.8%; Keef Richards, Robust Porter with Coconut, 7.2%), + 2 guest taps (Walnut River Brewing, Cloud Storage, NE IPA, 6.8%; KC Bier Mandarina, India Pale Lager, 5.8%).

CSB De Luxe Czech Pils was poured side pull in a dimple mug and it was very good; Bling Blau Blueberry Gose was really goddamn nice, somehow the Vanilla & Lactose didn’t kill it; Wizard of Hops was a tasty hazy; Keef Richards, Robust Coconut Porter didn’t suck, wasn’t cloying or too much, just right; and Crossing Paths, Farmhouse IPA, interesting, good citrus. I’m thinking Bling Blau Blueberry Gose & CSB De Luxe Czech Pils for the Wins, but really everything I had was solid.

Food here is pizza as there is no food truck today. Frowny face emoji. I’m talking with local beer guy, he has the knowledge and has shit upon my ‘next place’ plan and is directing me somewhere elsewhere (as local beer guys do). I would do the same if he were out seeing my scene. Good chill house, good crowd, good beers. Would’ve grabbed bottles if I had a way to keep ‘em cold on the road these next 3 days but alas…

This is my favorite brewery in town by far. The staff is always awesome, seven when they're slammed. The beers are top notch. Incredible sours, really good stouts and IPAs, and their pilsner is one I always grab a bunch of when it's available. Nice space, very clean. Can be a bit crowded, but that's my complaint, and it's good for them. They typically have a food truck there, no onsite kitchen.

This is by far the best microbrewery in Wichita, KS. They always have a great selection of styles on tap no matter what your preference is. They are always experimenting with new flavors.
About once a month, they have a live band performing and its always free. When they have special events - anniversary party or festival with other breweries from the state, it's always a blast!

Coolest vibe in Wichita by far with a bustling scene indoors and an expansive patio outdoors, with the two often linked by an open "garage" door. If you're big on sour beers (I'm not), you will love the place, but the rest of the beers are just OK. And for some reason, several of the servers - but not all - are not welcoming and will ignore you if you don't get in their face. Food trucks are a definite plus.

The vibe is definitely unique. A mix of a bit hipster, and sports crowd. Really nice bar and seating areas. Retro look in an old garage. Quality and service are superb. Great beer, clean glasses, friendly and efficient service that is always cleaning up and asking/answering customers questions. Selection is terrific, leans belgian, but every style and variat is represented. Food is decent, with the selection being bolstered by food trucks. Overall, this is a terrific spot and a beacon of good, well crafted beer.

2/17/17 - CSB is now open on Wednesday. Met Ian (owner/brewery). They now have food trucks on some nights.

Visited on a Thursday after dinner. Not crowded.

V - A hipster spot in a mid-west city otherwise devoid of many hipster places. Lots of beards and tattoos. Clean and open with garage doors for the right days. Picnic tables outside. A variety of tables and seating, including couches. 3.75

Sel - Good guest taps that complement the sour and hoppy offerings from CSB. Not all guest taps are local. 4.5

Ser - Super friendly and helpful. Willing to walk you through their beers to find the right one. Maybe a bit put off when they found out who I work for. 4.25

Q – They use a glass washer. Good pours in proper glassware. Clean glasses. As I like to say if you can’t get good quality beer at the brewery where else can you expect to get. 4.5

F - Not much but some and meat and cheese plates. 3.5

Most innovative entry in Wichita's suddenly burgeoning craft beer scene. Every beer skews to the eclectic there, usually in the Belgian/sour vein. CSB is located in a renovated industrial building across the street from a small well-shaded park. The interior is beautifully done: modern, warm and comfortable, with garage doors opening onto the best summer-night open air patio in town. A regular rotation of food trucks are parked out front. Really enjoyable place.

Best brewery in Wichita, if you like Belgian and belgian inspired brews. WBC might be better if you want a variety.

CSB has some pretty solid beers, however, I wish they were a little more different. They all taste somewhat the same, likely due to the experience of the brewers. CSB will go on to do amazing things I feel.

I highly suggest this place if you love craft beer and are stuck in the awful city of Wichita.

This is a really cool building. It has a large garage/bay door that can swing open in warm weather. Theres a long curved bar in the back. They fills crowlers and serve really unique tasty beers. Lots of sour beers and saisons. Great stop if you're in Wichita.
