Drank from an 11.2 fl oz bottle purchased at Fort Point Market, Boston, MA
Best Before/Batch 16 07 21 700
Served in a snifter

The beer poured a slightly hazy chestnut brown and was topped by a bubbly, khaki colored cap of froth that transformed into a thick, resilient collar. Spotty droplets of lacing trickled down the glass.

The aroma was more subtle and simplistic than I anticipated. Malty and slightly sweet. Caramel notes were apparent. Bit of toffee and brown sugar too. Moderately boozy. The nose turned sweeter and punchier with time. Some dark fruit notes appeared. Raisins and figs perhaps.

The flavor profile was similar to the nose. Malty and somewhat simplistic. Caramel and toffee notes led things off on the front end. Touch of brown sugar. The booze kicked in next and crescendoed as the beer moved along the palate. Earthy hop notes and a big alcohol kick came through in the finish. For 16%, however, the booziness was surprisingly subdued. Touch of roast as well.

Medium bodied mouthfeel. Somewhat thin for a beer of this magnitude. The liquid contained a fine, subtle effervescence that fluffed up nicely on the palate. Fairly creamy, slick and smooth.

Odravein - Bourbon Barrel-Aged is a rather forgettable barkeywine that lacks depth in both the aroma and flavor and is devoid of any bourbon character whatsoever. I usually enjoy trying beers by new and unfamiliar breweries, but these guys unfortunately missed the mark with this one.

Picked up at Julio's and shared with JLindros.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice hazy chestnut hue with a thick head that fades to leave a light blanket and little lacing. The legs are incredible.

S - Aromas of toffee and caramel. Some spicy hop notes, sweeter bourbon and vanilla, nice barrels. Really rich.

T - Taste is similar to the nose with loads of spicy bitterness. Big caramel sweetness. The barrel is a bit weaker but the caramel sauce is pleasant. There are nice oaky notes.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, creamy, alcohol hidden wonderfully.

O - Overall this was a solid enough barleywine. The hops are a bit spicy though.

THanks to rudzud
Pours a nice foamy frothy 1/2 finger head that fades slowly, nice retention, not much lacing though, long legs too, opaque dark chestnut slight auburn brown color

Nose brings loads of bourbon, sweet bourbon barrel juice, a little vanilla barrel, sweet candy malt, big caramel and some toffee, sweet candy malt, a little barrel spice, more butterscotch and vanilla too

Taste starts with loads and loads of caramel and butterscotch, tons of toffee too, thick chewy viscous with a little warming alcohol, bourbon is there but a lot more muted, some vanilla barrel, mild dark fruits with a little raisin and brandy, white nougat thing, a little spicy bitterness, bit of tannic oak too, a little tingly alcohol warmth too, a strange spicy peppermint phenol somewhere on the back end

Mouth is fuller bod, a little soft juicy malt feel, a touch of warming alcohol mostly back of the throat, decent carb for the style

Overall has a lot of really nice qualities, barrel is mixed, the flash of weird peppermint spicy phenol is strange and a bit out of place but still an interesting beer

Poured the 2018 cold Odravein aggressively into a FOb4 snifter. About a finger of creamy head dissipates quickly. Smells like wooded wort, not sweet, and seems like it's going to be bitter. Yep, it's bitter. Wishing there was some sweetness to back up the bitterness. Seems thin. Getting the alcohol on the back end. I'm not sure which whisky was used, but I'm not a fan. Was expecting a little more depth based on the reviews here and on Untappd. This is going to be difficult to finish... Taste, always the main rating point - 2.75 cold, 3.00 as it warms - meaning, "I like it, but don't love it". Will not be buying again. Still have one more that I'll age and will drink it at room temp and re-rate.

2018 vintage 12oz bottle poured chilled, hard to a tulip glass. Color is deep dark amber with no head and only slight lacing. Nose is very strong bourbon with some caramel. First sips follow the nose, with a lot of barrel and boozy bourbon. This is probably the strongest bourbon forward “beer” I’ve had. Alcohol is hot and up front, making me think it’s really bourbon in a bottle. Mouthfeel is medium, with a bitter back end. The barleywine really accommodates the bourbon. If it’s unclear...bourbon, bourbon, bourbon!

I had two 0.33l bottles of this as my nightcap at Café Frape in Maastricht on 23SEP17. Each bottle was €7.50. A bit of a splurge, but why not, eh?

It poured a clear, deep chestnut color. Had minimal foam or head, mostly some fine, off-white rim bubbles. Lacing, too, was sparse. The nose had some dark fruit notes mixed with bourbon; inviting! The body was medium-plus, and it was pretty smooth going down.

As for the flavor, I got some toffee, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread and bourbon mixed all together. Also had some cherry and raisin lurking in the rich, semi-sweet brew. A tasty, English-style BW with bourbon action topping things off. Scarily, the 16% ABV was NOT noticeable... Yikes!!

I cracked this from fridge temp, but have been allowing to warm over an hour. Pours a beautiful dark brown with an elegant head. Nose is just how I love it. Caramel notes, along with a bit of spice, raisins, prunes, vanilla. Taste is a big jolt of flavors! Tastes young, with significant alcohol presence. Slight bitterness competes with the sweet malts. Lots of caramel and bourbon. Definitely getting strong notes of raisins and figs. Really nice beer with an excellent, and somewhat dry, mouthfeel. Overall, I really like this beer. I would love to try one in a couple of years as I expect some of the "in your face" flavors will mellow out and provide a bit more balance. At 16.9%, I'm sure this could easily last a decade.

Got this one at the Duvel guy in Utrecht

From a bottle into a snifter
Best before 19 September 2017

APPEARANCE: Pours a 1+ finger, medium looking, bubbly and creamy off-white head with good retention. Clear deep mahogany red with some carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a half splotchy wisp and clings to the glass a bit. Ring remains leaving touches of lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Red fruits, caramel and toffee aromas, some grainy notes, wood and light bourbon on the nose. Some vanilla and light aromas of sweet cream on top of the oak barrels.

TASTE: Caramel, toffee, wood, bourbon notes and some boozy flavors up front. Some butterscotch, vanilla and oak at the swallow with a bold and lingering aftertaste of bourbon, wood, milk chocolate, butterscotch and caramel, as well as some hints of red fruits in the back. Bold and flavorful enough; well-engineered.

PALATE: Medium body with medium levels of carbonation. Creamy enough for the style and ABV for sure, goes down fine with a bit of a scratch and finishes a bit sticky. Heat lingers.

OVERALL: This is quality, quality stuff. The ABV is big but it drinks a lot easier than that. The barrel flavors are also well done, paring up well with the base bruiser of a barley wine. Drank down way too easily for the size of this one. Very worth tracking down if you’re a fan of the style, as it’s just as good as any other in this genre. If it wasn’t so expensive, I’d load up. Highly recommended.

Hazy dark amber color with a bit of tan foam. Aroma has really nice bourbon, smooth and not boozy at all, with caramel and toasted coconut. Taste has really nice bourbon flavors, sweet malt but gets more bitter towards the finish with earthy hops. Really nice coconut on the aftertaste. Medium body, low carbonation. ABV is hidden extremely well, no heat, no burn. Really good barleywine with excellent bourbon characteristics.
