2007 batch my girlfriend got me from Japan. Last bottle they had.

A: Pours a dark brown; ruby when held to light. slight carbonation, very little mocha head

S: Sweet, with a hint of booze. More specifically: a prominent dark fruit, some alcohol, roasted chocolate, and a pleasing spice scent.

T: Sweet. Dark fruit right up front with a little bit of alcoholic heat. gives way to a sweet mix of roasted chocolate malt and warm candy sugar.

M: Chewy and a just a little too thin. There is a slight carbonation that synergizes well with the taste.

D: Dessert beer. There is no reason to have more than one at a time. This may be too sweet for some.

Overall: This was a fantastic beer, I wish I had more to cellar (Stays good until 3/25/2020). If you can get this, then get it.

Super Vintage 2004 on tap at Popeyes. Awesome!

Arrives at the table in a brandy snifter, sporting an oak brown body and a tight mocha head. She's a beauty in that lovely understated way that barleywines have. Luxurious nose - fruit, spice and alcohol. Very rich, dark fruit flavours, with date and raisin at the forefront. There's also some warming alcohol in the mix and a great residual sweetness manifested in a brown sugar finish. A touch of hops at the end, but very much closer to the english style of barleywine than the american. Chewy, full body and low carbonation are well-suited.

A winner and better than their 2001 by a longshot.

On tap at "Japon (French)" night at Dieu De Ciel. One of two very different beers ,both from this brewery. This one, from 2001 was sour but not sour. Cuvee like apple-juice. The malting made this drinkable. A bit of colour, pretty. understated carbonation led to an average mouthfeel. Lots of white lace after.

On tap at Ushi Tora. 2004 Vintage. No other way to say it...this beer freaking rocked! I could have drank a liter of this myself. Granted, I would have been drooling on myself by the end of the night, but it would be worth it. Pours brown with a very tiny brown head. Aroma of a great barley wine...ripe fruits, candi sugar, leather, earthy and alcohol. I could smell it all night. Flavor is not a letdown. Chocolate, vanilla, sweet fruit and awesome alcohol burn...very nice. Full body and smoothly dangerous. I want more!

Needless to say, I disagree with the few ratings here. ;-)

Appearance: Pours a dark brown body with a tiny, thin ring of white bubbles.

Smell: Sweet-smelling caramel and chocolate shavings. Roasted prunes. Some boozey notes.

Taste: Caramel and light chocolate maltiness with a candy-coated sweetness. Tart taste of sherry-soaked prunes. Flash of Kikkoman. Not really much in the way of hops or bitterness. Long, warming finish delivers a bit more fruit.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation.

Drinkability: Interesting from the outset. In fairness, it is a tad hot and a bit light bodywise, but still pretty good.

At $40 a bottle retail, this is a huge disappointment.
Hell, at $4 a bottle this would be a huge disappointment.

A - Brown, slightly red body, with a white hazy small head.
S - Wet tabacco and red wine.
T - Bitter tabacco, very earthy, more wine.
M - Hot alcohol.
D - I had less than a forth of the bottle and couldnt finish it. I had to pass off on a friend (some friend I am, huh?)
