A: Pours a slightly hazed/cloudy straw yellow color. At first a white head rises to over two fingers, but recedes in a few seconds. A good coat of lace is left behind.
S: Musty, basement like aromas...I guess you can call that funk. Soft fruits of white grapes, lemon and citrus rind. Maybe a bit of wood aromas, but again everything is really soft. Which after time becomes really inviting.
T: The up front acidity is sharper than the nose would lead you to expect. Lemon/citrus flavors, musky basement again. Grapes, oak tannins. Beautifully nuanced and soft. Like the nose it draws you in, and you like it more and more with each sip.
M/D: A light to medium body. Moderate carbonation that tries to be spritzy like. Though maybe just the other side of watery. Dry tannins in the finish. Superbly enjoyable, and incredible to drink. The bottle is gone in no time.

Hmm...what a nice little contract brewed Saison. Soft, but enough nuance to be really inviting. It doesn't hit you over the head with any one characteristic. Really well balanced, and reminds me a lot of some Jolly Pumpkin (which is good). Accessible, but unique, and really well done. I will be getting more.

BOTTLE: Brown glass. Unbranded hood-and-wire cap over a cork. Simple yet classy label art and design. 1 pint 9.4 fl oz.

Served cold into a Cantillon gueuze glass at low altitude in Austin, TX. Reviewed live as a saison per the label. Expectations are above average. Batch 001. Bottled on 10/27/14. 6.4% ABV. Cork released by hand only with some effort.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: Half finger wide. White head. Thin and weak. Recedes within 10 seconds. Leaving no lacing as it recedes.

BODY: Straw/hay yellow colour of average vibrance. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible. Cloudy, with evidence of a lack of filtration.

Overall, it looks nice for a farmhouse ale, but doesn't jump out as unique or special.

AROMA: Wheat, lemon zest, citrusy twang, barnyard character, farmhouse funkiness (incl. brettanomyces), mild (maybe 3/10 sourness), hay, straw, minimal floral hop character, and some guiding dampened oak wood. A kiss of fruit.

Aromatic intensity is average, yet the brew is still quite evocative. The oak in particular in interesting, but I don't find any wine character.

Very intriguing. Boasts impressive subtlety. I can't wait for the first sip. Delightfully soft and nuanced.

TASTE: Funky from the brettanomyces yeast, with a complementary slightly tart sourness which is a good 4-5/10 in terms of intensity. Barnyard notes of straw and hay blend beautifully with wheat, flaked barley, and neutral Belgian malts to give this a surprisingly nuanced yet easily imposed upon malt backbone. Soft notes of faint fruit - primarily lemon and concomitant citrusy twang - are divine, and grow more expressive as the beer comes to temperature.

Boasts impressive depth of flavour and has incredible subtlety. More and more notes emerge as it comes to temperature, revealing its many layers. This is a surprisingly complex farmhouse ale with incredibly well incorporated wild characteristics. The bacteria and yeast don't clash, but rather complement each other in a marriage of funkiness and sourness. The guiding oak tone is lovely, but I do crave the wine promised on the label.

This is a gestalt brew, and I like it more and more the more I drink it.

TEXTURE: Refreshing, slightly acidic, smooth, wet, and quenching, with a medium body and appropriately moderate thickness. Carbonation is perfect. Lightly smacky on the palate from the sourness, but never puckering. Overall presence on the palate is fantastic. Somewhat effervescent.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.

OVERALL: Highly drinkable, and very enjoyable. This is a damned impressive effort from Oddwood Ales and I can't wait to try more of their work. Easily superior to anything I ever tried from Adelbert's (where this was brewed). Well worth seeking out. I'll be sending this to trade partners if I can find more of it. There's huge potential here, and this is some of the most promising work I've had from a new Texas brewery.

Best paired with a salad.

Serve chilled, not cold.

Really well-balanced saison with a pretty yellow color, good clean head and nice carbonation, really nice funky aroma, great Brett taste, and a frankly excellent finish.

Outstanding. I've had three Jolly Pumpkin sours this week and this tops them all. An excellent sour. Nice tropical flavors and a sour character reminiscent of JP's house yeast. More offerings like this, please!

Batch 002 (Bottled on 4/24/2015). 750mL bottle poured into a snifter. $11 at Specs.

Nice funky farmhouse aroma. The taste is very fruity with wine flavors along with a nice tartness and barnyard funk. The Brett is obvious, but not overwhelming, and the farmhouse base flavors are present. I really pick up on the oak from the barrel on the finish, which is refreshing and dry. No issues with carbonation.

Overall, a great barrel-aged saison. And for the price, one of the best values for this style.
