Notes: An imperial stout made from fine English roasted barley and aged on whole coffee beans to give it full, dry roasted flavor. Rich chocolate, caramel and Munich malts round out the flavor profile.

Pours to a rich creamy dark head and opaque black color. Aroma is roasted barley, vanilla, molasses, cocoa, licorice. Flavor is a bit harsh and boozy but brings lots of roast and maltiness and is balanced. Mouthfeel is a bit rough. Coffee is in the aftertaste only. A decent beer, well made with no major flaws but does not stand out much.

With a nod to traditional English stout, the stern malt backbone of toffee and roast pay respect to the classic imperial stout. But not restrained by those traditions, Elk Valley uses copious amounts of coffee to amplify the roast character that the stout provides naturally in its strict style.

Deep within its muddled dark, bark brown saturation likes a solid roasty earthiness to overtakes the nose. With solid mocha chocolate character, the stout also carries a strained coffee scent with a twang that suggests astringency. Caramel, chocolate and biscuit greet the palate with an over-cooked sweetness that's both savory and succulent.

Rich roast and creamy sweetness extends onto the middle palate with a firm malty support, but the sweetness and firm creamy cereal body drops out and the roasted malt and coffee additions stand on their own, shining with all their earthy, roasty glory. But this also allows for the rougher edges of roast to emerge in the form of burnt coffee and the astringency that it brings. Burnt grape and currant accompany the acrid roast as the finish looms.

Full and creamy with its velvety oat use, the ale loses its carbonation and the stout falls weightily on the finish rather quick. Roast-derived astringency tackles the late palate with a powdery-oak texture and a cocoa powder dryness that detracts slightly from the fresh coffee and inherent roast that lingers deep in aftertaste.

12oz can - no date.
Black with a 1/2" tan head on top. Retains well at 1/4" and leaves a webby lace behind.
Big coffee hit in the nose straight away followed by roasted malt, cocoa and molasses.
Earthy coffee is the dominant flavor. Dark and roasty.
Smooth, velvety mouthfeel, not as big as expected for an I.S. low carbonation is right. Finishes dry.
Good, a little one dimensional but good.

Pours ebony with mocha colored head. Some head retention & lacing

S: Coffee, roastyness & plenty of it, some vanilla

T: A little bit of char, roastyness, coffee grinds & drynesss up front. Baker's chocolate, charred grain & a little bit woody hops as this warms, plus a little vanilla as well, some astringency as well, starts to degrade coffee flavor a bit. Finishes a little dry, with vanilla, woodyness & coffee grinds

MF: Medium body, fairly restrained carbonation

Not bad, but this started with the promise of better flavor

Tan head. Black in color.

Thick stout with a lot of coffee and roast flavors. Some vanilla and lots of chocolate. Molasses.

Full bodied. Creamy and roasty.

Solid coffee imperial stout. A tad too much roast however.

I come upon Coffee Nemesis at Parkhill in Tulsa. I wasn't going to pass it up after becoming a fan of Nemesis last year. This mouth treat pours nearly black and is topped by a moch/orange 2-3 finger head of dense rich foam. If you like coffee beers then you'll like the rich coffee aroma which is backed by cocoa and molasses. Flavors are shades of espresso, dark chocolate, toffee, dark fruits, and vanilla and some grassy hops. Body is full and chewy. Carbonation is thick and silky. Great beer! This will give Bomb! a run for the money. Will be back for more.

Coffee Nemesis - Elk Valley
Imperial Stout - 9% abv
No visible canning date

L - this beer is a gusher! Explodes out of the can. 2-finger hazelnut head atop a black body.

S - chocolate, coffee, toffee, molasses, caramel, roast.

T - smooth coffee, covered in chocolate. Caramel biscuit middle. Low bitterness, low sweetness, low booziness.

F - medium-full, creamy body with medium carb.

O - a rather great coffee beer. I dig this a whole lot. Would never have guessed this was 9%.
