Notes: Full of malty chocolate and toffee flavors, Brownie Points has a creamy body from the addition of flaked oats. Madagascar and Mexican vanilla beans give this Brown Ale a smooth yet bold finish.

Brownie Points from Maplewood is an update to the classic brown ale. It is difficult to find this style out there but I think Maplewood nailed it. They added vanilla and created extra body within the beer. The result is a slightly dense brown ale with the classic fermented funk.

16 oz can (canned on 09/13/21) into a pint glass.

A: Clear dark brown color with a two-finger foamy tan head that eventually receded to a thin film.

S: Roasted malts, cocoa, faint vanilla.

T: Lot more here than in the nose! Vanilla comes out more but doesn't dominate and is nicely complemented by roasted malt, toffee, caramel, and chocolate.

F: Medium bodied and creamy, but might be better served with a little more carbonation.

16o can. Poured out a clear, dark brown color with a small, off-white head of foam. It smelled of vanilla, toffee and roasted malt. Sweet chocolate taste with vanilla and toasted caramel.

From a tall, wrapped can, this brew is a hazy, murky brown color. The head is slim ans wispy off-white. The smell is of vanilla and a little pale malt. Just a bit of grain and not much hops. Light roasted coffee? Medium body. The beer is drinkable and worthwhile.

Mahogany brown in color with a half inch of creamy beige on top. The aroma is of caramel and vanilla. I’m tasting a gentle dose of caramel and lightly spicy vanilla. The mouth is smooth and creamy.

Canned 9/13/21; drank 10/11/21 @ the Yarchives.

Semi-opaque brown orange appearance.

An even pour yielded a nice, noisy tan head; frothy lace.

Creme brulee & acorn notes in the nose.

Creamy, medium thick mouthfeel.

Vanilla syrup, caramel & acorn flavors.

Smelled better than it tasted, but a nice fall/early winter sipper.

Taste: roasted malts, brown sugar, vanilla beans, smooth. Toasted semi sweet vanilla bean nose. Brown cola hue, semi clear, with tan head and ring of lace. Medium body. 2 types of vanilla beans used, and it would pair well with desert. 25 IBUs

Pitch brown somewhat opaque body, mocha head and lacing. Caramel malts, vanilla and a touch of hops in the mild mannered nose. Taste starts the same, add some creamy oat and earth, but the finish has some metal on it combined with the sweet vanilla. Ruins a great thing it had going. Feel suffers from this ending too, before it is creamy light not too heavy at all. Too bad, had potential to be a good EBA

Murky dark brown/ruby body that appears pretty thin, fizzy light tan head fades to a ring. The nose has real vanilla, glimpses of authentic chocolate, a bit of roasted malt, and wet dog. The taste improves, balancing the faux-sweet vanilla flavor with a solid base of chocolate malts, coffee, earth, and a hit of bitterness. Vanilla is easy to overdo, and the fact that it both wasn't and was counterbalanced in case you think it was proves that this wasn't a gimmick but was instead crafted and measured. The body is, as suspected, thin and watery, and too fizzy.
Kudos for keeping the vanilla checked, but beyond the well-presented flavor this beer had some significant flaws. The lack of body (and what it did to the appearance), the wet dog smell, even the can's artwork (zzzzz....), all made for an enjoyable but unmemorable experience.
