Armed 'N Citra comes fully loaded with a springboard head that climbs a good two fingers before very slowly settling in. It's also equipped with gorgeous, confident highlights that provide a great deal of golden brightness to an otherwise dense and hazy complexion.

Although it has Citra in the name, this recipe also includes Magnum, Chinook and Simcoe hops. As result, it doesn't have the same intensity or concentration of citrus as a single hop ale. This isn't necessarily a negative thing considering it offers more dimension and a flavour not fixated on only one quality...

But, for the name's sake, it is a tad misleading to those who's hopes were centered on a purely fruity and tropical beer. Don't get me wrong, the tangerine and grapefruit and gooseberry and even kiwi notes are in there, but it's not all sunscreen, leis and palm trees. The aroma is notably pungent and earthy while the taste has a definite muskiness to it too.

Even in the finish those juicy citrus flavours have to compete with a good amount of herbal leafiness. Mind you, while it doesn't exceed the stated 45 IBU - if anything it seems far less bitter - it's still not exactly the light-and-breezy, sunny-day-session kind of beer that I (wrongly) assumed it would be; this pale ale has the profile of a slightly scaled-down IPA.

Perhaps I've misconstrued Armed 'N Citra. And perhaps this young and admirably independent brewer still has some climbing to do on the learning curve. Initial results - this beer included - are good but given the character of the recipes and the passion of the man behind them, I expect future batches to be great.

A - Bright medium amber colour with a thin layer of bright white head

S - Dankness with some lighter pine & grapefruit. A fairly mellow nose.

T - A huge spiciness, which didn't come through on the nose at all. Some lighter citrus and pine notes also come through. A fairly prominent caramel malt backbone, without being too sweet. The citra takes a back seat here, which is odd given the name of the beer. I had to check the label to verify that this was not a citra single hop pale ale (and I was right).

M - Medium body with a nice resinous feel. Light to moderate carbonation.

A-Hazy yellow with a hint of orange, white head dissipated quickly but lurks on the surface. Good lacing.
S-I am searching for more aroma punch, but it isn't there. I definitely get a mellow Citra aroma which is nice. Oddly enough I smell some of the alcohol, strange because this beer is only 5.2%.
M-Light mouthfeel with a very slight peppery feel off the carbonation.
T-Coupled with the light mouthfeel, there isn't enough pop here. I get the Citra sweetness that tries to fool the palate, but it fades because of the lack of alcohol level perhaps or it's missing a companion hop or underlying malt...just a thought.
O-I did enjoy this beer, it reminded me of something I brewed that was only Citra...then too I felt like something was missing. This is a really nice lite beer.

500ml bottle purchased at the brewery. Poured into a nonic pint.

Pours a slightly hazy orange pale ale colour. Not much head retention or lacing.

Pine, herbal, and citrus hop aromas. I'm pretty sure it's not just Citra.

It's like taking a bite of a sweet ripe grapefruit. Not a terribly complex or original hop profile but delicious nonetheless. Maybe a touch too much malt sweetness. Tastes quite a bit less bitter than even its modest 45 ibus.

Light, refreshing mouthfeel. Light body. Not much carbonation.

This is a nice light APA. The aroma and flavour are great, but it looks and feels a little bit too thin. The malt bill could maybe do with a tweak. At five or six bucks a bottle I'm not sure I'd seek it out over something like Great Lakes' Canuck or one of the rapidly-proliferating group of local "session" IPAs.

Rich tropical fruit flavors, a lovely wild hop nose, and a nice balance of malt to even out the bite. Bitterness is restrained. A lovely look, with rich lacing. Solid.

aggressive pour gets three fingers of frothy off white head with very good retention. Nice orange golden honey colour. cloudy. Quite handsome looking.

aroma is a big punch of citrus rind and pine pine pine. sweet honey malts come through as well.

The dominant hop characteristics is the pine, coming through straight away. Nice fruity middle underscores the bitter pine high notes - grapes, peach, grapefruit. long dry hoppy pine finish lingers a long while. Got this brew straight from the brewery and its just bursting with freshness.

Good body, plenty to push around on the tongue, almost syrupy. Good stuff.

Overall very good. I really enjoyed the pine forward character which is very well balanced with citrus and fruits. Lively all around and easy drinking - multiple glasses are definitely in the cards. Rainhard looks to be a great new brewery right in my neighbourhood no less! Perfect beer for summer.

Couple side notes. Rainhard is a brewery located in the west end of Toronto, though the profile here says York. Also, my bottle says 5.2% ABV.
