Very Good
DoppelbockDoppelbock
Notes: Standing at 7.5% ABV, this full-bodied lager was designed for the colder days and a cozy fireplace. This beer required three batches of grain to achieve its hardy and complex flavors. It was an adventure to brew, and we enjoy sharing it with friends.

Fort Hill has slid into my "consistent-buy" category over the past few months. I loved their Red Prince and really looking forward to this Doppelbock. The reviews seem a bit critical but they're also dated so I feel confident that the crew has been steadily upping their game.

Picked up a six pack (no damn dates - see below) and blew through it in a week which, for me, is no small feat.

Gorgeous amber-nearly-brown hue with a nice cap of off-white head. Aroma of toasted grain, brown bread, spicy and grassy hops with a small kiss of red apple. Taste is right there.

Feels hearty and full but not to the point where I couldn't put down three cans in a sitting. It has an ABV that belies the taste (no alcohol can be found in taste or aroma) but feels appropriate given the feel. Great late winter/early spring brew. Highly recommended.

Side rant - date your cans. I'm sure the freshness police get annoying after a while, especially when your IPAs are your big sellers, but for a small shop with an unclear production cycle, it's hard for me to judge your beer with an appropriate amount of information. If it's old - I want to know. If it's new - I want to know.

from a 12oz. can pours darker amber with a quickly fading half finger head and hardly any lace to speak of. the only aroma I could pick up was a faint smell of apples. taste of malt and slightly salty caramel with a smooth warming finish. light to medium body carbonation was ok. I think it would have been a better beer with a lower abv. but I would still buy it.

Had on tap at Fort Hill Brewery. Served in a pint glass. The beer had a medium-level head that quickly dissipated leaving a thin ring around the glass. The beer had a brown-amber like appearance with a generally see-through look. Could sense a buttery malt aroma with the drink with a taste that mirrored the flavor. Very smooth and creamy body overall. In general, I like the beer's aromas the most with some good characteristics found in its taste and mouthfeel.

First... that doesn't happen all that often on here anymore. Last can from a mixed 12-pack meaning I have had this three times before.

A- The 12oz can with the blue tab reveals a deep-golden/pale amber brew into my glass. The head atop it is off-white, reaches one finger with a puffy texture and has decent retention. Medium belt drops rare lacing after foam is all but gone around the edges.

S- For the ABV this surprisingly lacks the robust aroma I expect in the style. What I do get is a mix of fruits like apple, grape and plum and malts which give off toasty, caramel and sugary tones.

T- Follows the nose up with a similar profile of flavor and lack of robustness. For me the dominant tone is fruits, assuming from the yeast, like apple, grapes and raisin. Malts lend sweetness and just hints of toast and biscuit. Not all that hoppy but somewhat bitter.

MF- Silky and creamy with a moderately high carbonation smoothed out by the aforementioned textures. Bitter sweet finish.

No obvious off flavors or terribly bad characteristics but it just doesn't feel like a Doppelbock and the fruit flavors distract from the good characteristics. I associate German malts with the style and don't get enough. Doesn't seem to be fermented cleanly. More of a fan of the other three brews in the mixed pack and I would be more than ecstatic if this brew improved as I am a huge fan of the style.

Earthy malt forward. Toasted grain, a bit grassy, some dank noble hop bitterness. Medium bodied. Smoother feel. Semi dry, somewhat short finish. Fairly balanced overall. Not bad.

Does not taste like a7.5. Good drinking beer. Well constructed beer with a medium maltiness. Will buy again.

This was poured into a lager glass. The appearance was a nice looking ruddy dark amber almost brown color with a two finger white foamy head that slid off at a moderate pace. Sly messy lace. The aroma had a nice dark bready malt up front enlivening a little bit of earthy to grassy hop spices. Some baker’s chocolate with a little bit of wood combine fairly nice. The flavor leaned towards the semi-sweet malty breadiness and did a decent job of blending in the earthy and grassy portions. The palate was about medium bodied, perhaps a touch under with a sturdy carbonation about it. ABV felt good with a pretty good smoothness all around it. Overall, pretty nice doppelbock that I could have again.
