Dark brown, nice tan head and some lacing.

Roasty, coffee in the nose.

Roasty malt and coffee, a bit of a bitter dark chocolate and charcoal kick in the finish.

Substantial mouthfeel.

This is nicely done, a nice brew for cold weather. I've been impressed so far by Upper Hand.

a well enough made black ale, but somewhat unexciting as they go. it has all the roast and bitter charred malt depth of a good porter but about half the body. sometimes i like to get these deep grain flavors out of a beer that drinks a little easier, and this works well in that context. for some reason i expected a hoppier complexion on this one, but its decidedly not a black ipa. the hops are minimal here, and it seems to get most of its bitterness from the grain. some nice dark chocolate notes in here too, the malt side is well rounded for sure. this beer needs context, and for me, it was in a dimly lit bar on a chilly fall evening over a hot homemade pot pie, and in that context, this beer was the absolute perfect fit, especially after a day full of drinking beers, but on its own, im not sure it would give me the warm fuzzies quite the same way. not much yeast character here either, and not enough body to be wintery. its balanced and well made, but its not anything distinct at all. still, not enough good straight up black ale out there, so i enjoyed this quite a lot.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a medium creamy light tan head that retains fairly well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is roasty bitter malts with a little stale coffee.

The flavor is sweet roasty chocolate malts with a lingering bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a nice lower abv roasty bitter dark ale.

This tastes like most black ales. Like the smoothness that balances the dark almost burnt malt. Smooth and sessionable.

L: pours deep dark brown with ruby highlights under a lacy 1" tan cap with moderate retention

S: smells like grain and chocolate with no harsh or burnt roast aromas

T: Slightly tart upfront with traces of fruit and dark grains. The grains have no harsh or burnt roast flavors

F: medium body and medium high carbonation.

O: a flavorful dark ale with the malt profile of a Schwartzbier

Beautiful dark, dark brown color. Multi-hued tan head; not overly thick but not skimpy at all. Head slowly fades out to a film but finger thick lacing remains for the duration. Feel is a little light, but taste has a nice combination of malt and hops. Overall a very nice summer beer.

With 4.5 AVB it is not quite a session ale but very mild and drinkable.
