A nice stout but very strong. Bourbon is good but hot, dark bitter chocolate and roasted and burnt malts throughout. Not worth the price ($13 for a 12 oz can).

From the can it pours a very brown color which then looks pitch black in the glass. A modest tan head displays decent retention for the ABV and yields a thin ring of lacing.

The aroma opens quite boozy, almost medicinal. However, it soon settles nicely to showcase aromatic malt notes that are biscuity, nutty, and with touches of caramel, coffee and chocolate. Nevertheless, despite the strength of the alcohol aromas mellowing out, it still retains lots of the barrel aged character, including lots of notes of rye, oak, vanilla and dark fruit.

Up front, it opens sweet with a full, complex and chewy malt profile. Notes of doughy, biscuity and dark toasted malts, brown sugar, maple syrup, caramel, toffee and chocolate fudge. Their is a strong roasty/espresso bean like flavor, bitter and with an acidic brightness. Throughout it all, the bourbon barrel spice evokes spicy notes of rye, oak, vanilla, raisins and cherries.

Full bodied, viscous, sticky and smooth. The carbonation is moderately gentle. The finish is roasty, dry and with a touch of cherry.

Complex but relatively easy to drink given the high ABV. The barrel aged character shines through very nicely. Well done.

Served in a snifter glass form the can.

Appearance: Thin dark brown body with tan head rising roughly one finger's length off the body. Medium bubble's at most which give the beer a flat look.

Smell: Light whiskey aroma which hugs the nostrils coming off a touch sweet. caramel aroma is just right but light.

Taste: Sweet molasses with a butterscotch feel and deep coffee. Deep flavors which will leave the palates a but confused. Malty as well but not overpoweringly bitter.

Mouth: Medium carbonation with a full body. Sticky after-taste which makes the beer hard to let go.

Overall: Good brew, reminds me of another barrel aged gem I have had before. Smooth and worth sharing with a friend. Salud!

Appearance: Arrives fudge brown with a modest cap; spots of lacing linger

Smell: Roast and chocolate tones with the Rye barrel adding more than the Bourbon

Taste: Black bread, slight roast and chocolate, up front, with the barrel treatment adding perspective through the finish; spicy Rye through the middle with the Bourbon and vanilla bringing up the rear; dry finish with some warmth

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation; warming effect

Overall: I was intrigued by the duel barrel treatment here but the beer lacks body and complexity for the style

The aroma offers caramel, sticky chocolate syrup, light bourbon notes, some vanilla.

The flavor hits of brown sugar sweetness, bourbon soaked raisins, a lingering theme of vanilla, roasted malts, charred creme brulee crust, bitter coffee towards the finish with a dry oak finish.

The mouthfeel is silky smooth, while still moving on the palate with a pronounced medium plus carbonation.

What a hit from Threes! Love to see them expanding into more barrel-aged stuff.

Pours pitch black with a light chestnut-brown head. This beer has a killer smooth mouthfeel and so much barrel character. Notes of vanilla with the rye barrel.
