West Coast Style IPAWest Coast Style IPA
Notes: Brewed with pale barley and wheat malts and flavoured with varieties of American and German hops famed for their floral “white wine”, tropical and stone fruit flavours. Using English ale yeast and left unfiltered for added fruitiness, this beer has a partially soured mash and is aged in contact with French oak. The most noticeable feature of this beer is of course its intense hoppiness, which balance the round fruitiness of the hops and yeast. We make a few different IPA’s at Mill Street, but this is our flagship. Brewed on the west coast of Lake Ontario.

Leans more towards an East Coast IPA with the unfiltered, OJ character. Bold hop flavours and extremely drinkable. Still enjoyable and a step in the right direction for Mill Street. I'll buy it.

473ml can. Served cold in a sonic pint.

Hazy light orange colour. Scant half inch of head dissipates quickly. Nice lacing.

Aroma is dominated by citrusy hops.

This is a nice surprise. A really juicy citrusy hop bomb: grapefruit, orange, tangerine. Light malt sweetness on the back end.

Light, crisp mouthfeel for an IPA. Not much bitter aftertaste either.

I put off trying this one mostly out of some vaguely punk rock anti-corporate sentiment, but I have to admit it's a pretty damn good beer albeit on the light and inoffensive end of the IPA spectrum. I think I'd actually put it closer to the East Coast IPA sub-style (which I tend to associate with fruity, citrusy hops and complementary yeast esters) than West Coast (pine), but hey what do I know that those corporate marketing geniuses don't?

Draft: Poured a hazy yellow color ale with a small foamy head with OK retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of light grainy notes with some citrusy hops notes. Taste is also a mix of grainy malt with some citrusy hops and light bitter aftertaste. Body is a bit light with good carbonation with light thin finish. Somewhat short of hops and finish is too watery and thin for my liking.

Mmm. Deliciously fruity and hoppy without being mindlessly brutal. Possible gateway beer if you're trying to introduce the style to someone, but still markedly hoppy.

Soft pale hazy yellow. Moderate head to substantial film, nice lace. handsome brew. Grapefruit citrus nose, earthy, too. Fruity hoppy nose, appetizing. Bitter grapefruit citrus peel to taste. Overall pretty soft in character compared to a lot of others, making it moe approachable. Dry bitter finish.

Well made, nicely drinkable. An interesting effort.

Rather odd ipa. Grapefruit aroma pops up at can opening. A bit astringent and wierd with the tasting. Tastes like grapefruit concentrate and some hop.

Pours cloudy blond with a small but persistent cap. Light citrus and some cereal grains in the nose. A good dose of resiny grapefruit peach hop flavors dominate the taste. Solid maltiness makes this a less assertive than average west coast IPA. The mouthfeel is medium to light bodied with high carbonation. Moderate bitterness and citrus in the finish.

This is a decent IPA, but there are more bold offerings available locally. A decent entry IPA. Worth a tr.y

The knock on Mill Street for so long was that, after establishing a foothold, they were coasting something fierce. With this new beer, they're West COASTing. Ha ha ha no but seriously, this is delicious: credit to Mill Street's new AB-InBev corporate overlords.

Turbid yellow colour; stupid cloudy. Two fingers of head with solid persistence. Smell is orange juice, grapefruit juice, grapefruit pith, maybe some papaya or mango. Faint piney-ness. Light malt profile. Taste is juicy and fruity and bitter--finish with more pine/herbal hop, but feeling quite a bit like grapefruit juice in the early stages. Thick, juicy body, Middle-of-the-road carbonation.

To hate this would be . . . unchivalrous. It's no Fresh Squeezed, but it's in the same time zone (hah!), and decently priced, to boot.

Tallboy from the LCBO; dated Mar 24 2016 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a cloudy golden-yellow colour; opaque due to sediment. One finger of head is initially generated, lasting nearly five minutes, and eventually giving way to some good-looking splashes of seafoam lacing and a bubbly, filmy cap remain; each is bordered by the modest, foamy collar. Not particularly pungent on the nose, but still reasonably hoppy; I'm getting grapefruit, orange and maybe a bit of pine, with suggestions of wheaty malts and tropical fruit.

Tasty stuff, with a fruity, juicy flavour profile. The wheaty malts provide a nice base sweetness, with notes of pineapple, nectarine and possibly mango, leading into a citrusy back end with big notes of mandarin orange and grapefruit rind. It finishes off moderately bitter, with the fruitiness giving way to a more floral, piney astringency that hangs on into the aftertaste. Medium in body, with assertive, crisp, pin-prickly carbonation. Very high drinkability given the sturdy abv, but this one's appealing flavour, smooth texture and tempered bitterness are the main reasons for it.

Final Grade: 3.91, a solid B+. I would agree with the argument that West Coast Style IPA is one of Mill Street's best IPAs to date - if not the absolute best. My glass was gone quickly, and if this becomes commonplace at bars across the country, it will certainly become a staple of this brewery's portfolio. This is a pretty good beer that I totally encourage Ontario hopheads to try, but honestly, I almost don't have enough fingers to count the number of other locally-available, excellent domestic IPA options that I'd pick up again before returning to this one. Bonus marks because finally: a good IPA available at the next Jays game I go to!

Delicious. Extremely drinkable. Thoroughly enjoy the hop flavour and lack of harshness. If this were made by a smaller brewery I feel like it would be getting higher reviews. I've only tried it once, but this could be my new Ontario ipa favourite. Did i mention the drinkability?

341ml bottle, part of the 2016 Summer Sampler that just landed with a dull thud around this broad country of ours.

This beer pours a very hazy, medium banana peel yellow colour, with three fat-ass fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly off-white head, which leaves some pleasantly thorough tight island group lace around the glass as it slowly bleeds away.

It smells of musty orange and white grapefruit rind, slightly dank pine resin, bready and rather sourdough-heavy malt, a touch of earthy flintiness, and further leafy, weedy, and herbal green hop bitters. The taste is bready and grainy pale malt, saltwater taffy, muddled Florida citrus grove detritus, stale pine needles, a hint of wayward son yeastiness, and more gently leafy, weedy, and dead grassy hoppiness.

The bubbles are adequate in their mostly structural, and once in a while playful frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and generally smooth, as the IPA bitters take a sort of breather here, or something. It finishes off-dry, the lingering complex (mostly from its acidified nature) malt jostling with the remains of the peppy hop day.

Overall, an interesting foray into the brave new world of IPA-dom - at first glance, I thought that Mill Street was jumping on the juicy, unfiltered Vermont style, but that was not to be. Instead, we get a wee sourness, mixed with a bunch of restrained fruity and green hops - kind of a new thing for me, but the whole is definitely less than the sum of the parts, unfortunately.

Got this one at the LCBO this past summer

From a 16oz can into a snifter

APPEARANCE: Pours a 2+ finger, medium looking, fluffy white head with excellent retention. Murky gamboge orange in color with medium levels of carbonation. Head fades to a full foamy cap leaving touches of lacing on the glass. A splotchy wisp remains until the end leaving dots of lacing falling down the glass as it empties.

SMELL: Pine, grapefruit, mango and some pineapple on the nose. Decent strength and some nice fruit character here.

TASTE: Grapefruit, pine flavors, pineapple and mango up front. Fruity and tropical. A big finish of pineapple, grapefruit, some tropical notes and hop bitterness linger on the palate. Notes of bread too.

PALATE: Medium body with higher levels of carbonation. A little foamy on the palate, goes down fine and finishes dry. A touch of hop bitterness lingers.

OVERALL: Okay I guess. Some restrained bitterness and there’s definitely some well measured hop character here. This is definitely more New England style than it is a West Coast style IPA. Either way, it’s nice but nothing worth writing home about.

Cloudy straw/yellow color with a small white head.

Resinous smell, a little on the malty side for a west coast IPA.

Not a bad flavor, resinous and floral hops. the malts are not that present in the mouth, low to medium bitterness.

Not a fan of the mouth feel here, not enough body.
