Straw and slightly hazy with large, soda like carbonation, and a finger of white head.

Smells of tropical fruits, pineapple, pine, mangos and caramel.

Tastes of Belgian yeasts, pineapple, bubblegum and fermented mango. Slight grapefruit pith bitterness too.

Light body, moderate carbonation and a tannic finish.

Drinking in Muskoka after holding it in my fridge for months. Pleasantly surprised by this brew.

This is a very refreshing beer that you could sink pints of easily.

It has a slightly harsh finish but it looks great, has lacing that lasts for the entire pint.

Punches above its weight in the sessionable IPA category. Tastes sweet with hints of caramel malts. Good hop presence that doesn't overpower. Canned from the Mill Steeet Ottawa Brew Pub.

Can: Poured a bright yellow color ale with a large pure white foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of citrusy hops notes with light floral undertones is quite pleasant. Taste is a refreshing mix of citrusy hops notes with some floral undertones and some light residual sugar notes with no bitterness easily noticeable. Body is light with good carbonation. Easy drinking IPA with just enough hops presence.

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. Purchased for around $3.10 CDN.

Appearance - Fairly hazy, pale golden colored beer. A finger or so of dense white head rests on top and sticks around for a few minutes.

Smell - Somewhat grainy with a distinct hop presence in the nose, Citrus is the star with grapefruit and lemon playing prominent roles. Not a terribly big or unique nose.

Taste - Session IPA with moderate hop notes. Some bubblegum and banana since this is a wheat beer. Combo doesn't go together great.

Mouthfeel - Smooth and fairly light, creamy with chalky finish.

Overall - Nothing wrong with Welterweight but there's nothing here that really wants me to drink more of it. A serviceable if unspectacular session wheat IPA.

A: Translucent slightly hazy bright yellow and next to no lingering head.

S: Fantastic smell, very fruity and citrusy, smells like it might be a mixed tropical fruit juice. Smells like mango, peach, tangerine, pineapple, and perhaps a tiny bit of grapefruit.

T: Similar fruity citrus notes from the smell are present but dulled and paired with a rather bold hoppiness. The hops are slightly resiny and piney, again just a tiny bit of grapefruit. There is also a bit of a toasty malt flavour towards the end. It's just a touch bitter throughout the sip and into the aftertaste which is citrus rindy.

F: Medium low carbonation, slightly thick and leaves a light coating in your mouth.

O: I'm surprised at how tasty this beer is. The description on the can is spot on. Much bolder and hoppier than I would expect from a 4.8% Mill St. beer. Likely buying this one again and checking out other Mill St. varieties.

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated May 2 2017 and served well chilled. Billed as a 'white session IPA'.

Pours a cloudy lemon drop yellow, capped off with one finger of foamy, frothy white head. Pretty good retention; over the next five minutes, the head is reduced to a creamy-looking cap roughly 1 cm high, bounded by a thick, soapy collar. No shortage of lacing, either, with webs of the stuff being deposited as the liquid level drops with each sip . Coarse grains and wheaty sweetness on the nose, which comes off relatively subdued given the long list of aromatic hops listed in the ingredients. Hints of grapefruit, orange, pear, lemongrass and peach are also apparent, along with spicy pepper, floral hops and grassy hay, and just a touch of Belgian yeast - there's lots to work with here, but it all sort of blends together into an incoherent buzz.

Approachable and inoffensive, which probably won't surprise BAs who have much experience with this brewery. Grainy sweetness and bready wheat malts provide the backdrop, with the Belgian yeast and hop varietals left in charge of the remainder of the flavour profile. Muddled lemon and grapefruit citrus comes through, as do notes of peachy stone fruit and pear by mid-sip. A modest grassy, floral, bitterness arises on the back end, with spicy yeast notes and weak pine resin rounding out the finish. Slight phenolic note in the aftertaste; starts with some astringency, but it rapidly tapers off. Light in body, leaning towards watery, with assertive, prickly carbonation that results in a somewhat crisp, lively mouthfeel. Easy to drink, I guess, but nothing about it really stood out to me.

Final Grade: 3.64, a B grade. Mill Street's Welterweight is a little late to Ontario's session IPA party - at least, compared to established brews such as Muskoka's Detour or GLB's Sunnyside - but it's still a serviceable attempt at this pseudo-style, I suppose. I doubt I'll be purchasing it regularly, though - the $3-plus price tag makes that a pointless endeavour, because there is no shortage of higher-quality IPAs in that price range, in both the session and full-strength categories. A middling, ho-hum, board room-consensus sort of brew that seems designed to avoid extremes, in an effort to appeal to as many consumers as possible.
