Roggenbier is an ancient style of beer from Germany that actually became extinct for 500 years it is unfiltered like the Wit beer because the style predates filtration. A lot of bad language was used during the first brew, to earn the name Schleimhammer meaning “Slime Hammer” in German, after the mess it caused. We learned a lot and the second brew went better. Producing a delicious beer with a hint of dryness from the Nugget hops and some rich fruitiness and aroma from the German Hefeweizen yeast.

Picked up in a Manotick LCBO while house sitting for the weekend. Pleasantly surprised to find it way out here in the suburbs.

Pours a lightly hazy, amber-tinted brown with a medium foamy head. Good retention.

This is my first Roggenbier, and the aroma is not quite what I expected. Hefe-ish at first. I get clove, some light citrus, fair amount of spice, and some light caramel maltiness. I can pick out the rye a bit, but probably would not have been able to unless I was expecting it.

To me the rye is much more evident in the taste. Clove and a touch of fruitiness lead into a nice rich malt profile, all along complimented by a slight spicy peppery flavour. Finish is mostly rye, with little to no hop evidence.

Plenty of carbonation for a good full mouthfeel, which seems appropriate for a spicy beer such as this.

A very flavourful, interesting, and enjoyable beer. At 5.3%, this is easily drinkable. Light enough to manage a few but complex enough to keep your interest.

Good stuff Mill Street. Hopefully this one stays around or at least makes a repeat appearance.

355 ml bottle served cold into a chalice. Part of Mills Street's winter seasonal pack. This rendition is advertised as 5.3% ABV

Appearance - Schleimhammer pours a ruddy dark brown and a nice finger of so of fluffy light tan head. Pretty good staying power although minimal lacing left behind. Very hazy.

Smell - lots of cereal grains some toasted malts and a hint of smoke. Rye is noticeable with the light astringent and spicy aroma given off.

Taste - A little rye, lots of cereal grains, but actually quite a bit of wheat in here too with hints of banana. Strange but almost like a dunkelweizen / roggenbier hybrid.A little spice with possibly some cloves at the end. Taste is somewhat thin.

Mouthfeel - A creamy texture (due to the wheat-like characteristics). Body is medium -heavy and carbonation is crisp.

Overall - Schleimhammer isn't a bad offering from Mill Street, although it seems heavy on wheat like characteristics and the flavors just seem a little thin across the board. Solid but lacking the wow factor for sure.

Served in a seidel mug.

LOOK (4/5) Pours a copper with some nice orange highlights. The color is presented well by the opaqueness of the beer (along the lines of a kellerbier). The head was off-white and ample, it hung around for a while and left very faint lacing.

SMELL (3.5/5) The smell is dominated by yeast, very similar to a hefeweizen's banana-and-clove profile. That being said, it is somewhat sharper than a hefeweiss and the rye sourness is hinted at.

FLAVOUR (3.5/5) The yeastiness of the aroma is more faint on the tongue than in the nose. Its only briefly noticeable. Rather, the flavor is really dominated by breadiness and sour-rye notes to finish. This finish has a very nice rye sourness, but doesn't hit the smokey or spicy notes I had expected. Some faint hopping plays well with the sourness.

FEEL (4/5) A nice middling to full body on this one. What's really nice is that the sourness tickles the inside of your cheeks and the hops touch the back of the tongue in a way that plays pretty nicely off the fullness and breadiness. Its also well carbonated, similar to an effervescent hefeweiss. Really, this was the strength of the beer to me and what really stands out.

DRINK (4/5) Rye beers, being somewhat heavier that your average session beer, are the sort of thing you can put down again and again. That being said, I think that this brew deftly avoids heaviness with some of the lighter aspects to it. That makes for a nice drink.

I like this one quite a bit and I'm sad to see it go.

Picked up a couple of single bottles of this at the LCBO. Random.

Poured into a Mill Street lager glass. An opaque chestnut brew, slightly orange when held to the light. Almost looks like a dark apple cider or a dunkel. A thin, bubbly head quickly recedes to a few scattered patches.

Nose is very hefe or even dunkel-like. Notes of cloves, malt, fruit (banana), yeast, chocolate and biscuit. A bit of smoke to it as well. Not too shabby.

Taste is also surprisingly similar to a dunkelweizen, but with a spicy, rye bread character to it. Finishes slightly dry. Enjoyable.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a very crisp, tangy carbonation to it. Sharp.

Would love to have this on tap. Certainly a fine rye character to this brew; could have used a more robust spice character, but still quite tasty. Will pick up again.

355ml bottle, part of the current winter mixed pack. I recall asking about this brew when I was in Hogtown during summer a number of years ago, in an effort to complete all the styles (roggenbier being rather tough to come by, at the time), and getting a good laugh out of the bartender. Fuck them.

This beer pours a hazy, dark copper amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and fairly creamy beige head, which leaves a few instances of coral reef grotto lace around the glass as it slowly but surely recedes.

It smells of semi-sweet, bready pale malt, an equal to the task and edgy rye graininess, gently phenolic yeast, some prominent banana/generic citrus fruitiness, subtle black and white pepper mill output, and some very tame earthy, leafy, and floral noble hoppiness. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, further saucy rye grainy notes, wet banana chips, muddled domestic citrus rind, a now rather agreeable yeastiness, and some still plain but palatable leafy, weedy, and herbal green hop bitters.

The carbonation is fairly light on its feet, via an insouciant frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and mostly smooth, just a touch of rye aggressiveness (y'all know what I mean) bringing the mood down a bit here. It finishes well off-dry, the caramel/rye malt, banana pudding, and fading yeasty esters escorting us out of the building.

Overall, this is a nice combination of dunkelweizen and rye beer, with the latter doing well to pay respect to the former. Perhaps a bit on the sweet side, but that's ok, especially if you're in the market for such a libation, which I'm sure many people are.

This unfiltered rye beer pours brown and hazy after rousing the sediment at the bottom of the bottle. It's large and fluffy tan head dies down to a thin and retentive cap, leaving a splotch of lace here and there. Smelling it, I can pick up some nice hefeweizen-like banana and clove aromatics with a base note of rye bread underpinning it. Tangy and spicy flavour of sour rye bread and cloves, with a moderate amount of banana. That sour rye note holds into the aftertaste along with a very mild bitterness. The overall effect makes me imagine a sour banana bread. Medium bodied with lots of fluffy carbonation. It's light and refreshing but has a bit of complexity to its flavour. Nice beer, and kudos to Mill Street for getting this into the LCBO for the summer.

Very fresh beer, first day on tap at the brewpub. Brownish, with a little white head and lots and lots of lace. The aroma is very much rye, with old ale rich malt. Mouthfeel is about average. Taste is bittersweet, though leans on the sweet malty side. Corriander and rye, it doesn't skimp on ingrediants, however it is not the best example of rye beer ever. Worth having.

Pours a muddy brown with a big, lively, tan head. Bubbles coat the bottom of the glass, well-carbonated.

Spice is the first thing that jumps out in the aroma, clove-like. Just a touch of caramel sweetness. Toasted rye bread starts to come out as it warms.

Cloves right up front. Almost hot spices tingle the tongue a bit. Just loads of spice throughout, all sorts. Breadiness behind the spice, rye obviously, with a slight sourdough flavour.

A really interesting style, quite enjoyed it.

I got a bottle of this from a mixed pack I bought whilst in Hamilton for my son's hockey tournament. It poured a murky amber with off white head that is not leaving any lace. The scent had hints of vanilla and German dunkel malt. The taste is nicely balanced and easy to drink. There is smoke and German dunkel malt. The Mouthfeel is lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it's a good beer.

Bottle from the brewpub. 5.3% ABV on mine. Opaque mahogany body with a good blanket of foamy, beige head. The body appeared nice and full on the pour; looks promising. Head retention is decent but it doesn't leave much lacing.

Smells of lots of rye, pumpernickel, minerals, earthy noble hops, slightly smoky. Pretty nice.

The flavour is mostly of earthy noble hops and grainy rye along with some dark, almost-ripe peaches and plums and a nice peppery bite. Some light spices off in the background. Definitely some similarities to a Dunkel or Hefeweizen, though there's pretty much no sweetness to this one. Great, lingering hoppy rye aftertaste.

You can see it in the pour, this stuff has a great full body. The feel is ultimately brought down a bit by over-carbonation, though I think it pairs well with the spicy noble hops. Nice, lively feel.

I've never tried a Roggenbier before but will be seeking out more examples of the style if they taste anything like this one. Very sessionable. I'll definitely be drinking this again, this is one of the better Ontario brews I've tried.

Bottle purchased from queens quay Lcbo.

Pours a deep mahogany with a medium opaqueness. A tight 3 finger tan head is very active and bubbly, quickly dissipating to a decent covering of foam.

On the nose are hits of root beer and molasses. Supporting these are spicy fruity notes of mince meat pie, quatre epics and some light yeastiness.

Tastes of mulled cider, watery brown sugar and flat coke. Minimal hopping, malt very prevalent especially in the finish.
The beer is full in the mouth, without being viscous, coating the tongue quite well. Medium carbonation keeps things lively.

A nice representation of a very interesting style I'd love to see more of.

Bottle: Poured a deep brown color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of lightly sweet malt with light spicy undertones is quite pleasant. Taste is also dominated by lightly sweet caramel malt with light notes of spices. Body has a somewhat creamy texture which is really enjoyable with good carbonation. Easily drinkable with a nice taste profile. Probably one of the best beer I tried from this brewer.

Thanks to liamt07 for sending me this one. It is the first Roggenbier I taste too.

The beer color is brown and it is hazy. No head on this one. Bad pour? maybe. Aroma is spicy with malts. Nice and inviting. The taste is fruity and the beer shows lots of carbonation. So why no head? probably bad pour. The taste shows also some spices: I would guess some cloves and nutmeg(?). Not sure on the last one but I think it is nutmeg I'm getting.

This beer is interesting and good. Need to get my hands on this style to understand it more.

Couple pints at Volo, arrives a hazed auburn/amber - what I would imagine a rye beer to look like. Not much head though some bubbles come up with a subsequent swirl.

Nose is estery like a hefe, banana and wheat, hints of musty earth, a light sweetness - not much rye character coming through in the nose.

Sort of like a rye dunkel? Nice banana and wheat-ish characteristics, a pleasing rye spiciness, a hint of earthy mustiness, a touch of caramel sweetness, light drying in the finish. Lightish drinkable body, well carbonated but not edgy.

Tasty drinker, unusual to the palate but I can imagine ordering it again. Nothing mind-blowing but it's Mill St. doing what Mill St. does best, making well-made drinkable brews.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass

Appearance - The beer pours a murky brown colour with a gigantic off white fluffy and fizzy head. There appears to be a lot of carbonation and there is a fair amount of lacing. The head lasted for several minutes before it dissipated.

Smell - Hops, wheat, rye, and a peppery spice mix

Taste & Mouth - The beer is highly carbonated, lots of bubbles can be felt on the tongue. I can taste the rye and wheat up front, also some malts and caramel. The beer finishes on a slightly bitter sweet malty note and leaves a smoky aftertaste.

Drink - Another above average brew from the people at Mill Street. It is definitely worth a try.

A - Dark ruby brown. Fluffy white head that dies down very quickly. No head is left after a few minutes. No lacing after a few minutes either.

S - Fruits (banana, citrus) and spices.

T - Same as the smell with some added sourness. Rye and The fruits and slight spices are there. Some hops help the bitterness. Sweetness and bitterness are balanced nicely.

M/D - Smoothness is good, not too flat or fizzy. Drinkability suffers a bit, the flavour is good but not something I would drink more than one or two of that frequently. It's nice that this is brewed nearby, I would definitely pick this up again. It'll be nice to have this now and again.

I really like the fact that these original brewpub-only beers can now be purchased in singles rather than only in their mixed 6's.

My first Roggenbier, and I'm quite excited. I love getting my hands on these rare styles and happy about the fact that this one is made here in Ontario. Pours a hazy copper hue, letting you know right away that this beer is unflitered. Busy streams of carbonation stream up the side of the glass, fuelling the thick and billowy 3 finger cream coloured head that retains wonderfully, leaving sheets of lace.

I really enjoy the nose on this one; spicy with a good amount of clove, and rye bread with the latter imparting a very yeasty smell. Toasted malts and caramel are also thrown into the mix with hints of fruity esters being able to be pulled out of this complex and unique smelling beer.

The taste is much more straightforward than the nose led me to believe. A really nice kick of spiciness hits the palate right off the bat, pairing with notes of clove midway through and moving towards the back. Yeasty feel and taste throughout, somewhat similar to a hefe in that regard just less pronounced. A bit of sweetness also in the middle with the caramel and toasty malts coming through, but it's the spicy and yeasty characters that win out in the end.

The mouthfeel leans more towards being medium bodied with a nice wheaty feel. Dry in the finish with a good balance. Easy to drink, but the lack of complexity in the taste (at least in comparison to the nose) and nothing really popping out making me say "wow, this is a good beer", the drinkability sufferred a little bit just because I'm not sure of how many more times I would drink/buy this.

Overall, a good brew done in a rare style. Although Mill Street doesn't seem to put out any extreme or incredible offerings, their beers are always well crafted, flavourful, and fantastic alternatives to any BMC's out there, and this beer is of no exception. I'm glad I got my hands on a Roggenbier, and I'd be more than happy to try any other interpretations of this style, but I most likely won't be buying this one again anytime soon.

355 mL bottle included in their Winter 2016 sampler pack; dated Nov 17 2016 and served lightly chilled.

Pours a turbid amber-bronze colour, producing one finger of frothy beige-coloured head. It weakens and fades over the next couple of minutes, with a creamy-looking collar and smooth layer of foam being the eventual remnants. Grainy wheat and spicy rye bread comprise the bulk of the aroma, with hints of banana, spicy clove and some caramelized malts. Smells about halfway between a German hefe and a Belgian ale, with pronounced phenolic notes - though the presence of rye malts also provides the nose with some added personality.

The taste follows the aroma, with malted wheat and rye being the primary driving force in either case. Pale, grainy wheat malts and rye bread, with overripe banana, red apple flesh and caramel sweetness also coming through. Peppery clove and yeast confidently take over the back end, with lightly herbal hop bitterness blending in seamlessly with the spicy notes. Light-ish in body - a little too light, actually, with kind of a watery texture and brisk, lively carbonation that foams up in the mouth, only adding to the 'airy' feel. Good drinkability, but in the end I think this beer is lacking a certain je ne sais quois.

Final Grade: 3.62, a B grade. Schleimhammer Roggenbier makes for an acceptable tipple, though (like many, if not most Mill Street products) I find it to be rather forgettable in the end. Most fans of German-style wheat beers will probably appreciate this one - the rye is a bit more noticeable on the nose than in the flavour profile, so overall there's a lot of overlap between this and certain German hefes/dunkelweizens - Erdinger Dunkel definitely came to my mind early on in this review. Decent, but nothing to write home about; if this were available in singles I might pick it up once in a while.

A: Brown milky color really cloudy but with poor head that as other beers from the brewery dissipates a little quickly not leaving traces behind.

S: Wheat live aroma not really barley malt aroma with something else inside.

T: Full bitter flavor difficult to distinguish the rye but at the end it is there, really bitter.

M: Not an easy beer to drink, bitter lasting ending with not character at the beginning that get more complex.

A: Deep copper-amber with an off-white head, some retention, good lacing.

S: Quite spicy from the rye and the yeast (cloves).

T: Nice spicing, rye bread, banana bread, cloves, light caramel, modest bitterness

M: Moderate body has a crisp, dry finish, with only a slight hint of acidity. Carbonation is a little high.

D: A good drinker.

It seems a little drier and spicier (thought not quite as fruity, so maybe the fermentation got a little warmer) than when it was first on tap.
