Poured into a Chimay goblet from Batch # 5.

A - Pours a very nice hazy amber color with a nice .25 inch head that is quite dense and off-white. Recedes quickly though.

S - Delicious spices up front with nice sweet malt aromas. Good sweet fruitiness as well. Nice mild hop citrus character that is present and surprising. Nice fruit and spice overall aromas.

T - Nice spice up front that is very delicious and also has a good clove and sweet malt flavor. Good cloves and pepper and some coriander in there as well. Delicious Saison. Nice dry and crisp hop finish that isn't too strong but brings a great balance to the brew.

M & D - Great fluffy and crisp mouthfeel with great flavor and nice aroma. As it warms everything opens up even more. Extremely drinkable.

750mL (batch 10) into a tulip. Pours a nice deep amber w/ a 1-finger white head, leaving behind some lace.

Aroma is bready and spicy, gently floral, balanced.

Taste is a blend of sweet caramel and lighter malts, Belgian yeast, and spice. A nicy citrusy hoppiness too. Smooth and drinkable.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, again very drinkable.

Overall a slightly darker, hoppier take on a saison but it's tasty and refreshing.

A- Hazed brownish amber body with a cream colored head that dissipates almost immediately.

A- Light floral notes, fruits, and spice. Kindof earthy.

T- Sweet malt with an instant spicy hit. Sweet caramel bread flavor. Not as full flavored as I would expect.

M- Medium body. Highly carbonated, but falls flat rather quickly.

D- I'm a bit disappointed, the aroma and flavor were lighter than I would have liked. The bottle I had says batch 3. I hope that did not affect it poorly.

Batch #5.

A: Pours a hazy dark amber color with a big fluffy head that fades slowly to lots of lacing.

S: Aroma of fruit, spice, bit of malt sweetness and citrus.

T: Taste of fruit, bit of caramel sweetness and earthy grit. There is some fruity tart and a dry finish.

F: Medium body, crisp and smooth. Nice balance. More fruit flavors emerge as it warms.

O: Very nice drinker, much better than I expected.

Batch no. 8

Clear amber pour, hazy offwhite foam. Lasting head retention.

Floral spices, sawdust, earthy topsoil, baked apples. Caramel and pie crust pastry as it warms.

Malty and yeasty with a mildly tart astringency. Light earthy spice and apple flavors, dry and mild bitter aftertaste. Clean effervescent carbonation, medium bodied. Lightly fruity, pear and apple notes from the yeast. It definitely has a rustic quality about it that's hard to put a finger on. Overall pretty enjoyable, nice to try something from this rural Missouri brewery.

Darker than I expected - more like an amber ale. A tan fluffy, feathery head dies down to leave lace behind.

Citrus, horsey, and some malts beneath. Disappointed there's not more on the nose.

Grapefruit, farmhouse, and some notes of peach, but it ends a bit musty. Underwhelming when more is expected.

Carbonation is sparkling, with bitterness gripping the tongue. It ends dry and closes quickly.

Not terrible, but when there are so many better saison choices out there, opt elsewhere.

Appearance: Augusta Saison pours a very hazy dark caramel color with straw colored highlights. About a finger of eggshell white head reduces down to slight lacing. Seems a little dark colored for a saison.

Smell: Bananas, cloves, a lot of esters, and citrus. They blend nicely for a very aromatic scent. 4.5

Taste: Just a bit of malt at first, followed by bananas and citrus, followed by esters at the end. 4

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: Fairly light bodied and smooth drinking. Nice fine carbonation. Great flavor results in a beer that is very drinkable and satisfying.

Took a flyer on this at Macadoodles in Jane, MO...

Opens with a loud pop! Batch#3 pours a supereffervescent caramel & a pinky of fast-falling cream colored head. Hazes a as the bottle is drained, above average head retention & some lacing

S: Earthy notes, apple peels

T: Follows the nose plus some cinnamon, candi-sugar & caramel up front. Apple peel dominates as this warms, some pear & slight citric hop flavor & dryness are there as well, flavors pick as this warms up. Finishes fruitty (pears apples & figs), dry, grapefruitty & slightly doughy

MF: Medium bodied with lively carbonation, thins out as it warms, pretty good balance

Drinks easy, but doesn't really nail the style true. Seems a tad muted/watered down, nice effort that falls a bit short

Poured into Duvel tulip...

Batch 5

A: pours a hazy amber color with a frothy off white head. has good retention and is leaving thick lacing

S: first thing i notice is a woodsy, white grapes, peppery, dustiness, and noble hops, along with some sweet, syrupy malt.

T: follows right along with the nose: woodsy, white grape flavors up front, then dusty barnyard hay, and spicy, peppery, bitter noble hops. finishes very bitter with flavors of green persimmons, black pepper, and cedar.

M: medium body with a vibrant and slightly foamy carbonation. finishes very dry, slight alcoholic warmth, and slightly resinous

Overall, a great example of a saison. I'd like to imagine this is close to what traditional saison were like. The woodsy flavor gives it a "cellar-aged" characteristic that i really like. I would most likely buy this one again.

Had several different batches.

A - Poured out a slightly cloudy, orange color with copper highlights. It had a rocky, two-finger head of khaki colored foam that lasted fairly long and left some nice lacing.

S - It smelled of spices, yeast and some caramel sweetness.

T - Fairly spicy and yeasty like a saison should be. It had a good caramel backbone. A couple times I've picked up an odd sour fruitiness.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale with a dry finish.

D - From batch to batch it lacks consistency. There have been times it's really good and other times that it needed work.

750 mL bottle poured into a tulip.
Batch No. 4.

Pours a turbid auburn color, quite distinctive, capped by a fizzy white head that diminishes quickly, leaving a thin film.

Very fruity on the nose, with pears, cider-ish apples, prunes, and brown bananas, alongside a generic spice character. A subtle note of peppery yeast hints at saison; otherwise I'd be lost as to the style.

Palate follows the nose, though the fruitiness is more blended. Pear note still dominates. A bit peppery, a bit spicy, a bit yeasty. Altogether underwhelming. I can appreciate a subtle beer, but this isn't subtle--it's just sort of mild and bland. Tastes fine, there just isn't much to really like.

Medium bodied, halfway between soft and firm. Tiny, light, almost prickly bubbles of carbonation. Not particularly quenching or restorative, as a good farmhouse ale should be.

Poured this 750 mL brown bottle into a Duvel glass. Batch 3. The body was a somewhat hazy golden with reddish highlights. The head was large and cream colored. Fine bubbles left light lacing.

Smell was vegetal. Reminded me of cutting a butternut squash? Unique.

Taste was yeasty. Dirt/earth. Stale fruitiness. A little tart and overall rather bland. Underwhelming. Maybe this one needs more aging?

Mouthfeel was medium in body. A little too light in carbonation, some slickness.

Obtained in trade from monsterfat (thanks!). Batch #2. Poured from a 750mL bottle into my Troubadour tulip.

Raw sienna body with copper highlights. A cream-tipped ivory head recedes to a half finger of lightly whipped cream - far milkier than most traditional Belgian styles - leaving tiny yet ornate patterns of lacing on the sides of the glass, as the uniform sheet of bubbles is cut apart by thin waves of legs. Starts clear but grows murkier with subsequent pours as you introduce more tendrils of yeast into the glass.

Banana, vanilla soft-serve, and malt ball aromatics (very faint milk chocolate?), along with a touch of white pepper.

Hops contribute a low grassy note, though this is joined by a muddy element. Mild buttermilk, peppercorn, and an herbal component which brings to mind chives show up mid-palate. Light citrus throughout, though not as much as I'd expect. The finish is quite flavorful and pleasing, but could be dryer. All in all, a little rough, but unique.

Medium-bodied, creamy, and adequately carbonated, though it lacks effervescence. Alcohol is fairly low, so this is just about sessionable - unfortunately it lacks the vitality, tartness, or strength to maximize interest and quenchability.

The shortcoming of many domestic saisons I find to be their lightness and lack of character - this beer has something of the opposite problem as it is a bit dark and plodding for the style. Overall, I still enjoyed it and am always happy to try another Saison.

750 ml corked and cages bottle, Batch #3 hand numbered. From a light pour a tall three fingers of head jumps up. The head drops down slightly slower than it went up and settles as a cap about the size of a quarter in the center and an edge around the glass. Color is a warm toasted amber with a hint of orange hues.

Up until now, I had thought I knew what saison "horse-blanket" aroma is. I was wrong. With this saison I can smell the earth, the hay, the fertilizer. It has a dark healthy loam of rich soil. And there is also a dry fruit sweetness like a baked apple. The taste has more of the grain, stone ground whole grain bread. Bread so fresh you can still feel the yest rising. There is also some clove and ginger spices that tingle in the finish.

Mouthfeel has a dry and gritty texture with a mild body underneath. This is a very filling beer, whereas many saisons are very light and crisp. Different and very nice.
