An unusual Polish Kvass from J&J European Deli in Chicago, zero english on the label. BBD: 02.03.14
Sleek 1L plastic bottle with a clever design incorporating a minimal brown label and a mustache logo.
Poured into a tumbler glass, it's a dark brown color, showing clear garnet red in the light. Thin layer of fizz on the surface that disappears after a minute. Some rising carbonation visible in the high clarity liquid.
Smells like raisin bread toast. Clean and pleasant, not overly sweet or artificial.
Taste is similar, toasted raisin bread with a medium level of sweetness, it finishes dry and toasty. Slightly fizzy soda carbonation. Bready and raisiny, maybe slightly tangy. More roasty than most other Kvass varieties, which makes me wonder if there's some roasted barley in this. Overall it's a pleasant drink, while obviously sweetened, it's a departure from the glut of overly sweet/artificial commercial Kvass' out there. I'll get this next time the Kvass-Kraving™ hits.
Translated ingredients from the label:
Water, rye flour, malt (4%) rye and barley syrup, glucose - fructose syrup, sugar, acidity regulator, lactic acid, hop extract, carbon dioxide. Source: http://www.vanpur.com.pl/en/brands/beverages/jedrzej/
