Bar Harbor Real AleBar Harbor Real Ale
Notes: A good, clean nut brown ale with a malty body. This is our most popular ale due to its smooth and malty flavor.

We use a mixture of pale, crystal and black malts in this one, and our primary hop is Target, though we also add some Whitbread Goldings Variation as well.

The Real Ale is best fresh, so fresh in fact, that it's great right out of the bright tank.

Pours a nice dark brown with a rather loose head that fades to a ring. Smells quite roasty with a nice dry malt backbone and some dusty cocoa notes. Similar on the taste front. Dry and quite earthy with dry malt, some nice spicy and earthy hops and more cocoa notes. Not sweet at all, and there is a mineral note that is pleasant and reminds me of an English ale. Smooth and very slightly chalky- in a good way- it has some grip. Quite delicious for what it is. I brought some to a party and both craft and non craft drinkers commented on how much they enjoyed it.

A nice brown ale without the nutty pretensions that many English brown ales have. Pours a darker brown and has a firm, clean head that is creamy in color. Smell is very earthy at first but then mellows to a rich, roasted malt aroma. Taste is very full bodied and complex. Perhaps some chicory or hazelnut in the taste but not an overwhelming presence. the malt lingers on the tongue. Easy to drink, wouldn't believe its ABV

Pours a copper brown color with bright clarity.
Head formation is lacking quite a bit even though it has good carbonation. Aroma is a bit weak with some roasted amlts and nuts.
Taste is pretty much lightly roasted malts, pretty simple taste.
Drinks with a medium weight but thin and watery around the edges. Finishes semi-dry and light bitterness.
Standard fair here nothing special.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 11/17/2018. Pours slightly hazy deep ruby red/brown color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, roasted nuts, brown bread dough/crust, and toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, raisin, plum, fig, pear, red apple, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready/light roasted malts and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of big caramel, brown sugar, toffee, roasted nuts, brown bread dough/crust, and toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, raisin, plum, fig, pear, red apple, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, floral, grassy, peppery, roasted bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, roasted nuts, brown bread dough/crust, toasted biscuit, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, dark fruit, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/light roasted malts and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and no cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, fairly sticky, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.2%. Overall this is a delicious English brown ale. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/light roasted malts and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the mellowly bitter/drying finish. Very flavorful and not watery for the ABV. Great rich and well rounded English malt complexity; with restrained fruity English yeast, and balancing earthy hops against sweetness. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

A: Pours a reddish-brown colour with a solid two-fingers worth of dirty beige creamy head. Good retention and spotty lacing noticeable.

S: Caramel, molasses, faint banana, hints of coffee, and hazelnuts. Lingering fruity hop aroma. Appealing aromas, albeit perhaps a bit difficult to detect.

T: Unlike the aroma indicated, the taste is leaning towards fruity hops rather than more caramel malt dominant, which presents a crisp and refreshing taste. Hints of sour citrus elements in the finish along with the roasted flavours.

M: Light body with a medium-low carbonation level. Crisp and clean mouthfeel with a slightly tart (citrus) finish.

D: A nice English Brown Ale that's certainly sessionable.

Presentation: 12oz brown bottle. No freshness date.

Appearance: Deep and dark mahogony brown with a finger thick off-white creamy foam head.

Smell: Nutty, toasted, caramel and sweet malts with light earthy floral aromas.

Taste: Smooth and creamy mouthfeel and a medium body with loads of rich malt flavour. Toasted, nutty and light caramel malt flavours with faint earth, wood and chickory. Malt sweetness is light to medium, and even throughout the brew. Small taste of diacetyl. Hops balances well with a raw, earthy semi-rind citrus flavour that peaks to a quick bitter bite. Finishes with a raw and oily hop feel, touch of dryness and grain husk.

Notes: Indeed a "real ale." I thoroughly enjoyed this brew and its completeness. An ideal session ale. 5.2% abv.

12 oz brown long neck twist off, hmmm … the same bottle that Shipyard uses. “Real Ale”? No sediment in the bottle and very clear. Even the freshness date is the same format of Shipyard … the assumption is that it really is contract brewed.

Appearance: The head retention is pretty sad, a soda like crackle of the bubbles is a bit disturbing leave almost nothing to show. The clarity on the other had is bright with a deep garnet brown colour.

Smell: Sweet aroma with hints of cocoa, caramel and toasted grain. Faint fruitiness is there as well.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Moderate body, slick mouth feel and a lost crispness. Quick chocolaty tones, watered down roasted grain and a good amount of malt sweetness. Hops draw no attention and barley balance. Slight metallic twang from the toasted malts. Finishes sweet.

Notes: I’ve had this brew op tap and it was excellent, the bottled product is average and seen to me as a travesty to what the brewery really is.
