Bar Harbor Real AleBar Harbor Real Ale

Brewed by:
Atlantic Brewing Company / Mainely Meat BBQ
Maine, United States

Style: English Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A good, clean nut brown ale with a malty body. This is our most popular ale due to its smooth and malty flavor.

We use a mixture of pale, crystal and black malts in this one, and our primary hop is Target, though we also add some Whitbread Goldings Variation as well.

The Real Ale is best fresh, so fresh in fact, that it's great right out of the bright tank.

Appearance: Big foamy head, very creamy with some staying power. Lacing like glue. Head had a slight cocoa-like color. Little bubbles racing from bottom to top.

Smell: Nearly all malt. Chocolate-like sweet aroma with a hint of fruit. Very little evidence of hops.

Taste: Definite roasted flavor surround by a thick malty sweetness. Slight hint of alcohol. Finishes clean to me.

Mouthfeel: Nice full-bodied feel, very creamy.

Drinkability: Clean finish makes this easily drinkable.

I'm glad I tried this beer. It has been a while since I tried a nice English brown.

The Samoset resort in Rockport, ME has a fairly decent selection of local microbrews. This beer was a medium brown color with a thick white head. It had a caramel/roasted grain aroma. Nice taste. Sweet, a mild chocolate taste, and a little bit of hops. A little thin, but otherwise a pretty good beer.

Presentation: 12oz brown bottle. No freshness date.

Appearance: Deep and dark mahogony brown with a finger thick off-white creamy foam head.

Smell: Nutty, toasted, caramel and sweet malts with light earthy floral aromas.

Taste: Smooth and creamy mouthfeel and a medium body with loads of rich malt flavour. Toasted, nutty and light caramel malt flavours with faint earth, wood and chickory. Malt sweetness is light to medium, and even throughout the brew. Small taste of diacetyl. Hops balances well with a raw, earthy semi-rind citrus flavour that peaks to a quick bitter bite. Finishes with a raw and oily hop feel, touch of dryness and grain husk.

Notes: Indeed a "real ale." I thoroughly enjoyed this brew and its completeness. An ideal session ale. 5.2% abv.

12 oz brown long neck twist off, hmmm … the same bottle that Shipyard uses. “Real Ale”? No sediment in the bottle and very clear. Even the freshness date is the same format of Shipyard … the assumption is that it really is contract brewed.

Appearance: The head retention is pretty sad, a soda like crackle of the bubbles is a bit disturbing leave almost nothing to show. The clarity on the other had is bright with a deep garnet brown colour.

Smell: Sweet aroma with hints of cocoa, caramel and toasted grain. Faint fruitiness is there as well.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Moderate body, slick mouth feel and a lost crispness. Quick chocolaty tones, watered down roasted grain and a good amount of malt sweetness. Hops draw no attention and barley balance. Slight metallic twang from the toasted malts. Finishes sweet.

Notes: I’ve had this brew op tap and it was excellent, the bottled product is average and seen to me as a travesty to what the brewery really is.

One of three Atlantic Brewing selections available at the Leaf and Ale in Knoxville, Tn. This one pours a clear, copper mahogany body with a one finger tan head that retains well and leaves plenty of patchy lace.
Aroma is toffee and caramel, with a slight note of diacetyl and some sweetish citrus hops.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with moderate carbonation and an impressive smoothness.
Taste opens with an unexpected note of orange and tangerine hops, followed by a solid malt character of toffee and caramel. Hops and malts blend into a really nice flavor profile that may be a bit hoppy for an English Brown Ale, but it works for me.
Very impressive brown ale here. This is one I'll come back to.

Appearance: very small head caramel brown

Smell: very faint--toasted malt, some earth

Taste: light malt, flowers, some caramel--just not an overpowering beer

Mouthfeel: light, watery, semi-sweet

Drinkability: I would try this again--and may re-review--especially if I can find it on tap. As a stand alone beer, I may give this a C. As a brown ale, it just does not have the same flavor and smell impact as others I have had in the style. The flavors are subtle. Not a favorite, not the worst I have had.

The beer pours a medium to dark brown color with a cream-colored head. The aroma is caramel and toffee with some nuttyness. The flavor is toffee, chocolate and caramel with some grassy hops. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Not bad, but nothing too special.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Apperance: Darker brown in color. Thin off white head.

Smell: Malts and coffee

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth and medium bodied. Taste more like a coffee stout than an ale.

Overall: Ok brew but not my favorite. I guess if it was offered I would have it again.

A very dark brown ale with smallish head and good lace. Fruity aroma with dark roasty qualities. Lots of brown sugar in initial caramel rush, some raw grass qualities which taste infinitely more appealing than they sound. Despite big sweet caramel malt presence this beer is not at all cloying; hops step in at the right moment to cleanse the palate and leave you with a bitter finish that calls out for another sip. This is a serious beer for serious Maine weather; a bright summery day like this, while delightful, does not allow this beer to let its colors shine.

Light mahogany color with a beige head that settles quickly. Faint smell of dates, brown sugar, and molasses. Roasty flavor of dark malts, coffee, and hot chocolate. Aftertaste of raisin, and a trace of a lingering hop presence. Smooth mouthfeel, but could have more fullness. Not an over-the-top beer, but very good, and very drinkable.

Poured a almost dark ruby color. Nice solid cream colored head. Smells of malts with a hint of something fruity in the background.

The taste is initially nice. Very malty up front with a sweetness in the middle, then countered with some hop at the end. Mouthfeel was average with some mild carbonation. Not a bad beer by any means but nothing to go out of your way for. A decent session brew.

Appearance: Dark burgundy that I can barely see light through. Handsome, if I do say so myself. A nice 1/4 head that fades but does stick around.

Smell: Weak, but has a hint of a floral and nut.

Taste: roasted malts, light nut flavor. Nothing over powering, but a good, smooth, well balanced brew.

Mouthfeel: Weak carbonation but smooth. Overall just an average mouthfeel.

Drinkability: I would willingly have another as the beer isn't too filling and goes down easy.

Comments: Sample was possibly a little old, so I would like to try this beer again some day. Finding it on tap would also be something that would tickle my fancy.

A-Deep mahogany with moderate clarity and a tan head that quickly fades to near nothing.

S-Not much here...I had to reach to detect some malts, cocoa, a bit of fruit and grain.

T-Grains, earth, and a nuttiness, with a hint of malt and cocoa. Enough hops to balance, but not much more. Very satisfying in a thirst quenching way. Reminds me of some of my other Maine favorites like Shipyard.

M-Medium mouthfeel and carbonation overall

D-This is a very drinkable beer...I like it alot...nothing remarkable here, but great choice if a full 6 pack was in the works. Would definately buy it again.
