Brewed by:
Atlantic Brewing Company / Mainely Meat BBQ
Maine, United States

Style: Fruit and Field Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A light fruit ale, made with Maine wild blueberries. As opposed to many of the sweeter fruit beers on the market, our addition of fresh Maine wild blueberries in this light ale yields a subtle blueberry aroma, without the sweet aftertaste. A mixture of the following Mutton malts, pale, crystal, and Munich, are combined with wheat to give this ale its lighter body, and we only use minimal amounts of Target and Willamette hops.

Tea-colored ale with no real head of which to speak. Strong blueberry aroma...all I can smell are blueberries. The berry is more subtle in the flavor and is accompanied by grass and yeast. Has a light body that, with the blueberry, make this a good brew for a hot summer night.

12 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a hazy amber with a finger-width cream head. Reasonable carbonation and some lacing.

Aroma: Smells of blueberries, wheat, a touch of hops, and a little faint spicy zest.

Taste: This beer starts out mild, with more of an accent of blueberry than a dominant flavor. It has the characteristics of a nice wheat pale ale. Blueberry gets more noticeable as it warms, revealing a slight syrupy taste. Wheat taste stays present throughout.

Mouthfeel: Pretty decent body for a fruit beer. Good for spring or fall as well as summer.

Overall: This is a pretty decent blueberry beer that is complex and interesting enough to keep you engaged. Some of the citrus and lemon of a traditional wheat butts up against the blueberries in a slightly odd way, and the taste does get syrupy as it warms. It's a nice offering, though.

A - Pours a deep amber with some hints of orange. Very clear, lightly carbonated, little head that become none within minutes.

S - Blueberries, in fact way more blueberry smell than I would have thought possible. Some biscuit aroma and sweetness really give this a blueberry muffin smell. Certainly unique, but quite nice.

T - Oops, that blueberry smell doesn't come through in the taste. Tastes more like an artificial blueberry syrup and it quite tart, like a blueberry sweet tart if they make such a thing. If this is hopped it is so light as to be almost non existent and the sweetness is cloying.

M - Thin with little feel, for being sweet it has very little body.

D - One is plenty, more of a topic of conversation beer than something you want to drink. Worth trying to know what blueberry beer is like, but after won't need another.

Kind of on the reddish side for a blueberry beer. No real head or head retention at all to speak of. Smells interesting. Sweet and acidic and biting. I dont know that I really pick up on the blueberry taste in the beer. I let it warm up a bit, and still not much. I think its lurking around there in the aftertaste, very subtley. Still, I like this beer. Its much smoother than the other blueberry ale I've had. I'd probably like it even more if it was hot out and I was drinking this while sweating.

I bought this beer for my wife, who likes fruit beers. She didn't like this one, so I got to finish her glass, as well as the remainder of the 22oz bottle. It was a dark amber color with a small head. Aroma was all sweet fruit. It had a berry taste, with the tiniest bit of hops coming through at the end. Far too sweet for my taste.

12 oz brown long neck twist off, hmmm … the same bottle that Shipyard uses. Even the freshness date is the same format of Shipyard … the assumption is that it really is contract brewed.

Appearance: Clear and tawny brown, the thin bubbly lace holds virtually no retention at all.

Smell: Blueberries, what else? Light spicy hop and some malt sweetness … that is about it.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Ample crispness within the light to moderate body. Slim maltiness limply throws a sweetness on the palate. The blueberry flavour is nice and even throughout. Good spicing with the hops, just enough to balance and not get in the way of the fruit flavour. Touch of dextrin and blueberry sweetness in the finish.

Notes: An all around good blueberry ale, nothing that jumps out and surprises the senses … after one I had enough for the day.

This 12 oz bottle pours a hazy, rust colored body with a small, silky head supported by lots of active carbonation. Head retains quite well and deposits a moderate amount of patchy lace.

Aroma is subdued, with a light note of fresh blueberries atop pale ale malt.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with moderate carbonation.

The taste is well balanced, and very tasty, but the blueberry flavor is not intense. I'm thinking that this was the intention of the brewery, as there is no cloying, berry sweetness. There is just enough berry to make this a unique and very quaffable pale fruit ale.

At $9.99 a sixpack at the many stores where i saw this on the Maine coast, it's no bargain, but it's a nicely drinkable, berry ale without an intense fruit flavor.

This beer pours deep amber and translucent. There is not an overwhelming smell of blueberries at in other fruit beers. It smells just slightly of blueberry overtones. I wasn't too impressed with the first taste which was just slightly bitter. As the beer warms it starts to taste better. It becomes a little sweeter and the blueberry taste comes through naturally.

The bitter first taste gave took away from the initial drinkability, that too improved as time went on becoming a much smoother beer.

12 ounce bottle, with "best enjoyed before" dating. Pours a cloudy, muddy shade of darker amber. Fluffy white head, leaving some lacing. Nose is faintly of blueberries and some toasty malt. Faint fruity notes, malty, not much hops. Not anything heroic here, just a middle of the road, somewhat fruity ale, plasant summer quaffer, thats about it.

Appearance: medium head, amber orange in color

Smell: lots of blueberries

Taste: very blueberry--there is also a hint of wheat

Mouthfeel: sweet, tart, and crisp

Drinkability: This one is very sessionable for a fruit ale. It hits the blueberry taste perfectly. It does not go out of the box, but if blueberry and wheat is what you want, this is place for it.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Clear copper color with an off white head and medium lacing on the glass.

Smell: Blueberries and pine notes.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Light to medium bodied, not as well balanced as I had thought. Taste of light blueberries and a bitter sweet taste on the end.

Overall: Not a horrible brew, but I have had much better blueberry beers.

Appears an amber body with an off white head leaves behind thin lace after the cream head dwindles. Aroma has a strong air of blueberry and a touch of earthiness with the caramel malt presence weighing in pretty light overall a nutty stem characteristic weighs in. Taste has a creamy semi sweet herbal tea leaf matched with blueberry from the earth type flavors, also contains mild malt s with more leafy bitterness. Mouthfeel has medium to light body with an even smooth carbonation that comes off very straight up ale like versus the typical fruit beer marketed by most beer companies. Drinkability ha an easy going flavorful yet not overly fruity profile.

Pours a short-lived fizzy off-white head over an amber-colored clear body. Large bubbles make their way upward. Moderate blueberry aroma, nearly overrides a faint trace of caramel in the background. The light caramel has a bit more presence in the flavor. The blueberry is the lead flavor, but it isn’t overbearing and lets the other flavors come through. A light hop bitterness, but not a major player. A light body with moderate carbonation.

I was expecting a bit more in the flavor department. The blueberry flavor is done with moderation—and rightly so, as I think if there was much more in here it would be offsetting. A bit more backing sweetness from the malt, or some more earthy hop aromas could have added a little more complexity. Still, its light body and fruit esence would make a refreshing summer ale after a day of inhaling smog on Cadillac Mtn.
