Style: Fruit / Vegetable Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A light fruit ale, made with Maine wild blueberries. As opposed to many of the sweeter fruit beers on the market, our addition of fresh Maine wild blueberries in this light ale yields a subtle blueberry aroma, without the sweet aftertaste. A mixture of the following Mutton malts, pale, crystal, and Munich, are combined with wheat to give this ale its lighter body, and we only use minimal amounts of Target and Willamette hops.

Dark amber with a foamy ring and some creeping lace.

Smell is buttery blueberry, and strawberry balsamic vinegar--I'm not sure this is intentional.

Taste is blueberry cobbler, with that lager-like malt and tart blueberry. It is nearing souring at times, which I was a touch concerned about.

Now that I read other reviews of this, it seems the souring may be a persistent, and thus intentional, attribute. In that case, I like it more, it's just so faintly lurking in the background that it seems like it's a little creepy.

This fruit ale pours a slightly opaque, somewhat dark orange color with a thin white foamy head. The smell is not surprisingly mostly of blueberry, but also there is some graininess to the scent. The scent actually isn’t overwhelming and manages to not be artificial like many blueberry ales, it’s actually quite pleasant. The flavor is actually quite grainy with some wheat notes and a spicy snap of hops and only a faint sour blueberry flavor. The body is on the light end of medium and the finish is semi-dry. I have to give this ale credit for not being completely drowned with overly sweet artificial blueberry flavor like most blueberry ales that I’ve tried. That alone makes it one of the better blueberry beers I’ve had. That being said, although I think that the level of blueberry flavor is appropriate it still somehow tastes a little funky. I think it would have been better with some different malts. I still have yet to find a blueberry ale that I love, which is frustrating because I think it should be possible, but this is at least somewhat appealing in an odd way.

Can't expect much from blueberry beer. Decent taste, probably would be good casual picnic beer

The beer comes in a dark red amber with hints of purple from the blueberries.

The aroma offers blueberry jam, pie, candy, a huge artificial sugary sweetness, bready malt.

However, on the flavor, lots of grain, artificial blueberry flavors, blueberry syrup, a stiff lingering earthy bitterness, skunky malts. Overcarbonation. The beer is generally bland with lack of balance.
