Appearance: dark leather brown in color, 1/4 inch head, medium carbonation, clear

Smell: coffee, cream, vanilla, and caramel

Taste: deep roasted coffee, light cream, chocolate, vanilla, and caramel

Mouthfeel: moderate carbonation, medium-heavy body for the style, nice mix of sweet and bitter

Overall: This is the best beer I have had from Atlantic. Nice and complex. The coffee is dominant but never overpowering to the other flavors. Exceptionally smooth. What a great surprise.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #80 (Sep 2013):

Very well executed, just sweet enough up front and an excellent use of coffee, which is not easy. As for the vanilla, that is a bonus here. The coffee used is from Crooked Porch Coffee of Bar Harbor, keepin’ it local on that front! Seek a bottle out.

STYLE: Coffee Milk Stout
ABV: 5.4%

LOOK: Tight, tiny-bubbled lacing, dark brown color

SMELL: Fresh-ground coffee, delicate vanilla, toasted bread, mild char, creamy

TASTE: Sweet, roasted coffee, charred grain, vanilla, faint blackberries, modest hopping, hint of alcohol, silky, taffy, milky, brown bread, roasted bite finish, ends dry

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Very dark almost black color with about two fingers of a thick beige head. Mild lacing on the glass.

Smell: Coffee, malts, sweet milk.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth but thicker full bodied. Taste of coffee and sweet milk with malts and a bitter aftertaste.

Overall: Good stout, had this a few times now and always enjoy it.

Ellen’s Coffee Stout opens to a huge whiff of coffee, heavy cream and, mostly, chocolate, the latter existing in both dark and milk forms, but tending toward the latter, with extra brown sugar and vanilla added. The combination of the heavy sugars and bready malts gives the beer a S’mores quality, the milk chocolate seeming to mix with marshmallow and graham cracker, the aromas intense enough that they seem to be added artificially/naturally. The beer comes quite close to Southern Tier’s Crème Brulee in this respect, smelling very much like a dessert, and not quite a lot like a beer. The overall impression is nice, but the heavy milk chocolate does detract from the stout, and the underlying coffee and ash notes are largely muted and overwhelmed.

On the tongue, the beer has more dark and ashy notes than were present in the aroma, with coffee grounds and ash coming to the front. Marching immediately behind them, however, is the milk chocolate, which still adds a S’mores/Crème Brulee touch that is more dessert- than beer-like. Heavy whipping cream adds marshmallow notes, joined by brown sugars and vanilla. The malts furthermore bring in cracker, biscuit, and rising wheat dough, with just a touch of yeast. The aftertaste is a continuation of the main mouthful, though some hoppy, bitter pine notes come out as the sugars die off. Mouthfeel is a watery medium-light, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is decent beer, and it’s certainly surprising how much flavor is packed in here, considering the beer is only 5.4% ABV. In the end, however, the massive sugars and vanilla notes from the milk sugars and added vanilla beans simply overpowers much of the underlying stout, and the result, while tasty, needs better balance.

From the 650 ml bottle. Sampled on June 21, 2014.

The pour is deep black with a lingering beige tan head. Chunks of sediment.

The aroma has a coffee grinds and vanilla as the label promises with roasted dark malts mixing it up. Although there was something that felt a little soapy.

Medium body but also smooth and creamy.

The taste is like the aroma with a good roasted malt character at the start that is quickly overtaken by coffee and vanilla. Milky. Not a lot of bitterness at first but as I make my way through the bottle the bitterness tends to kick in.

On tap at Maine-ly Meat in Bar Harbor, ME.

This one pours a very dark brown, nearly black, with a white head, and a little bit of lacing.

Smells like roasty coffee, bitter dark chocolate, barley malt, and a little bit of lactose.

This is a solid straightforward coffee milk stout that hits all of the expected flavor points. Roasty coffee and black roasted malt, dark chocolate and sweet creamy lactose. It's nice.

This is creamy and soft tasting, with a good level of carbonation.

A solid no frills coffee stout that hit all he right notes for me.

Pours a dark brown color with a wispy head, no lacing on the glass.

Smell has a strong coffee aroma that hits the nose right off, roasted aspects become more clear upon further sniffing, subtle vanilla presence that doesn't overwhelm.

Taste is much more bitterness and less sweet, the roasty toasty malt along with the coffee really ups the burnt bitterness, mild sweetness located between the first taste and the aftertaste lasts only briefly, vanilla is around but fortunately not a large factor as it can be quite distracting so the light touch is appreciated, carbonation is medium high with a decent body but could be fuller and/or creamier.

Poured into a goblet. Color was a nice dark mostly opaque brown with a thick light brown head. Initially poured a 3 finger head that took a very long time to go down, and had excellent side cling. Aroma was a slightly burnt coffee with a small hint of dark chocolate. Flavor was a vanilla sweet, with just a tad of coffee, seemed more like a mocha flavor. A slight hint of oily bitter that detracted some. Felt pretty good in the mouth, a tad bit thin but not bad. Overall a reasonable stout. Not quite as thick or sweet as I expect from a milk stout, otherwise it would have rated higher.
