I am reviewing the sister establishment THE ALEHOUSE with is at 23 University Strasse .
This recent bar with the bottle shop close by must have the largest selection of beers on tap in Zurich. Its is also a restaurant and popular with local students. Beer is not served until midday, but you can get coffee etc before then. They usually have at least 20 beers on tap, ranging from Germany, USA, ever changing range at typical Zurich prices, dependent on alcohol strength. Staff very knowledgeable about the beers, speak English, and a good food menu too. Basic interior, larger tables for groups and an outside seating area at the back in fine weather. Definitely worth a visit when in Zurich. To get there, walk across the road bridge from the Station to Limmenquay - and look for the STUDENT BAHN funicular - catch that, from there continue walking up the hill past tram stops, then turn LEFT and walk up towards the University, and its about 100 yards from there. Otherwise a Tram from outside the Main Station. You can walk it, but a steep climb. Note the STUDENT BAHN funicular does not usually run after 7pm, but its an easy walk back down to the riverside. Stopped by while on a business trip in Zurich. Incredible bottle shop. Prices are a bit high, but that's to be expected in Switzerland! The beer selection is incredible, with lots of great stuff from several different countries (including the US). Lots of BA stuff, which is great. Helpful worker, although tended to recommend based on what he liked, which seemed different from my general interests. That said, I will return whenever I am in Zurich.

The Ale House, which is in a separate building, is incredible. The guy working (Mats) was super nice and helpful. He was incredibly knowledgeable and was really fun to chat with. The selection of 20 taps was great, with something for everyone. I really love the vibe, and I'll be back for sure.

Open bar and comfortable sitting area, great food.
Quiet, sizeable outside sitting terrace.
Very knowledgeable and friendly staff.
More important than all, they have in the pub, amongst many excellent bottle choices, but, 20 of the best quality beers from around the world on draft! The best I've ever seen.
The shop has an elaborate choice of great beers from all over.

This shop opened less than a year ago and saved Zurich from a long, hard beer drought. Swiss beer used to be (and still is, to those not in the know) the butt of a lot of jokes. This wasn't only because Swiss brewers lacked a certain creativity and any incentive to distribute, but also because good imported beer was extremely hard to come by. Jon and his friend (owners here) may have solved this single-handedly by bringing a down-to-earth vibe into the heart of Zurich and providing us all with random imported goodies along with the best that modern Swiss micro- (ahem, nano-) brewing has to offer. And it is getting better every month, literally! Exciting times in Switzerland these days, and this store is the best Zurich has got. Huge, hand-crafted selection, just don't count on the same beer being there tomorrow. And that's a very good thing!
