Just after telling my friends no American breweries were brewing Biere de garde, here’s this one. adequate but lacking some of the floral/spice notes of the French style. Medium amber with small beige head, malt, spice, meadow. Something missing.

01/30/13 On tap at Rattle n Hum, NYC. Likin' this a lot. You can always tell a well made brew & this is one. No one will be offended with a taste of this. Might sound boring to some, but sometime well rounded & inoffensive carry a quality that is tough to beat. This is one of those.

Now this is a biere de garde.
Bready and malty sweet. Minimal hop tones. I get a little spice, sure, but it seems to take a backseat to the malts. Not all the way balanced. But focusing on that seems like nit-picking. There aren't a lot of biere de gardes that I really appreciate. But this is one of them. Glad I picked up the bottle when I had the chance.

Medium dark amber in the world's heaviest chalice. A little of the yeasty flavor. Very fruity.
A little drier in the finish. finally the Belgian flavor comes through in the aftertaste. Tastes like grapes and pomegranate but mouthfeel is kind of flat. A touch of oatmeal with a little mustiness. I can't say this even reminds me of a Bière de Garde, and it defies categorization. Not particularly pleasing in any case. A case of authentic Belgian blahs.
On tap at the Neighborhood in San Diego. Tasted 10/29/2012 and transcribed from notes.
