look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

Appearance: foamy white head, copper brown color, good clarity

Aroma: toasty malt aroma, slight nut character, subtle noble hop aroma

Taste: toasty, nutty, slight dark fruit hints, noble hop finish, everything you can ask for in an altbier

Mouthfeel: medium body (lighter than Uriege and Schlossel, equal to Kurzer, slightly heavier than Schumaher, medium carbonation, lager crispness

Overall Impression: the best of the altbiers in Dusseldorf in my opinion. It combines a medium body, all the nutty and toasty character you want exhibited, restrains but still exhibits dark fruit hints, and finishes with moderate carbonation and a spicy noble hop bite. The original and the best!

Subtle, but good. Caramelly/nutty malts. Nicely dry, pretty much all the way through, with a nicely herbal, bitter hops finish. This is my first 'real' altbier, and i kinda like it. Interesting, and very quaffable, nice soft mouthfeel aswell. The type of stuff you can drink all day, and then again all night. (bottle- GBBF 03')

On gravity at Füchschen in Düsseldorf. Pours a deep copper color with a very nice head. Good retention and lacing. Smells of slight caramelized sugar and a nice amount of hops, along with a bit of pilsner malt. Tastes of caramel malt, with a well-hopped, dry finish. Light-medium body, but it keeps with style. It's about as drinkable as water--the kind of beer you could really session.

Poured on tap at Churchkey into a Becher glass.

Great copper brown body, brassy glowing and bright if as well dark too interestingly. Thin tan head, half finger presented with a real creamy top, extremely tiny bubbles nearly nitro looking if not cask like with sheets of creamy lacing going to down in rings to coat.

Classic dry nut notes, but incredibly mineral sensing, rocky, and super friggin dry. Warmth and time give off some real interesting aromas. Steely banana like esters, and licorice thick root, with a real extreme tannic nut quality.

Palate is extremely bright on first sip. Intensely dry, cottonmouth like palate on first sip and a bit intense. The malt action lightness nicely and there's almost a crisp pils like snap to the beer. Huge mineral, rocky, earth tones in the palate extremely unexpected. Real powerful carbonation, like hot Perrier feeling. Aftertaste brings some interesting banana esters that were hinted at the nose.

Really fascinating altbier, nothing unlike any beer I've ever had. It's a bit jarring but gets better after some time, considerably more so. Still not my favorite alt but very memorable and would have it again for sure.

Cask at Brauerei Im Füchschen, Düsseldorf, Germany

A: The beer is clear amber in color and has a two finger high head that took a long time to settle down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles that consistently remained on the surface. No carbonation is visible in the form of rising bubbles.
S: There are light aromas of caramel malts and floral hops in the nose.
T: The beer has an excellent balance in the taste between the malt and hops; there are some hints of caramel malts and a very light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and is both crisp and very smooth.
D: The beer is very easy to drink and is quite sessionable; I could drink these all night.

Only ever drank it in the brewhouse, and I can only say, it was great on all three occasions. It is off the main drinking area, but well worth finding. The whole place added to the way I remember the beer tasted.

Not a typical Dusseldorf Alt by any means. Slightly darker and not as sweet compared to most.

Standard Dusseldorf appearance, poured from the barrel with light carbonation being forced out by the fast pour. Slightly smoky, dusty on the nose. Assertively bitter with a herbally raw german hopiness (spalt I think). Very interesting and another classic altbier that I would love to have again.

Had on tap at Im Fuchschen in Dusseldorf. Served in the traditional small glass. Cool temp.

A-perfectly clear copper body and a very nice thick white cap.

S-cereal and floral hop smell

T-very well balanced between hop and grain. Not overly sweet.

M-medium to light

D-Really one of the best beers I have ever had. Everything I wanted and expected in this style.

Thanks to Ethan for bringint this. I'm not super experienced in Alts, and this was a nice sampling of them.

A - Reddish brown colored beer with a white head and some spots on the sides. I thought that this one was darker than our first, but Alex and I held this side-by-side with the Schumacher Alt and they look almost exactly the same.

S - Smells a bit like the Schumacher, but a little less sweet, as there is some peat or smoke cutting through it that I like.

T - Sweet malts and caramel, but this one has a bit of a smokey/peaty quality to it that I like quite a bit. Pretty clean and refreshing, it has a heavier flavor profile than the Schumacher.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation and a clean finish.

O - Pretty refreshing and easy to drink, but has a litle bit of meat on its bones compared to the Schumacher. Enjoyed it quite a bit.
