Notes: Batch #1 - Bottled 2-14-15 - Beginning as an Entire Porter and left to mature for sixty days under the mellowing effects of bourbon-infused oak, the velvety Last Gentleman is gallant, sophisticated, and rebellious — as if he were the reckoning between all good teachings, wanton desire, and the rising and setting of the sun.

I was thrilled to pick up this "Limited Autumnal Release" batch 3 Fall 2017 - imperial bourbon, pumpkin porter!
Just opened it up and poured it into a tulip glass

Pours a lovely, inky dark brown with foamy khaki head of about 1FB. Sadly, this is the only really good attribute.
Smells is sort of a sour pumpkin, some pumpkin spice no bourbon notes and an off malty/basement note.
Taste is non specific sweet malt forward, the barest hint of vanilla/wood, hint of pumpkin and this mid note that hits you in the back of the tongue that's unpleasantly sour/bitter - acrid may be the best word to describe it. Mouthfeel is thin like you would expect from a porter (rather than a stout), minimal effervescence and a tacky residue and meh aftertaste.

Perhaps I got a bad bottle? After half a glass, I had to dump this one down the drain - I'm sad to say it was neither a good porter, a good pumpkin ale or a good bourbon barreled porter - their other offerings are better - this ale is not one of their better offerings.

Pours almost black with a very thick tan head that is slow to dissipate. Moderate lacing. Slightly pungent aroma. The taste is ashy and acrid. Mouthfeel is slightly oily and sticky with a faintly unpleasant aftertaste. Very disappointing.

A: Pours a dark opaque brown color. A dense rocky, khaki colored head forms with good retention. Light lace is left as the foam gently recedes after a few minutes.
S: Toast, lightly roasted malts, and light grains. Dry chocolate, earthy English yeast that becomes lightly fruity.
T: Like the nose toasted malts up front, that become a bit ashy. Light roast and grains. Powdery dry chocolate and earthy English yeast. The ashy bitterness builds as this warms, and starts to become unpleasant after a while. Even some fusel alcohol.
M/O: A medium body and good carbonation. Crisp and fizzy on the tongue, that is dry a bit rough, and chalky. The more I drink this, the less I like it. Even though this is not a big beer, some fusel alcohol comes through, on top of and off putting ashy character.

I don't get any kind of Bourbon or wood with this. Just a standard English porter that is not bad at first, but the ashy bitterness and fusel like alcohol makes this more of a one and done. After initially thinking this was an average, but enjoyable offering I continued to find things I did not want.

This one is an odd duck. I am rating this like a beer--so in that perspective, it is sort of an insignificant, dark, somewhat flat drink--but I think it may be the way the brewer intended. Objectively, this is very good.

I poured it into a whiskey glass because of the smell. Different from most bourbon barrel-aged stouts/porters, this one didn't just taste like a whiskey-flavored ale, but behaved more like a bourbon itself. The smoky wood flavor is prominent and the head dissipated (never to return) within a few minutes. That's okay.

This smells remarkably like a whiskey, even the empty glass. I intend to grab a few more bottles of these for nights when I want to "session" bourbon, but need to maintain my senses.

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass.
LOOK: Nice darkness with a reasonable head that dissipates fairly quickly.
SMELL: As another reviewer said, "deep roast and chocolate." Spot on.
TASTE: Definitely a lot of roasted grains coming through here, a bit of chocolate, and just a little of the barrel aging coming through. Very tasty, but if I wasn't told barrel aged, I'm not sure I could pick it out.
FEEL: Really nice porter mouthfeel - this is not a thick stout, but they are absolutely accurate in calling this a porter. It is thin but does play perfectly with the carbonation to thicken up in the mouth.
OVERALL: This is a solid porter but the barrel aging is very much taking a supportive role as an enhancer. I do like my barrel agings to be upfront, but this one is (in British tradition) extremely balanced to the point where it is nuanced. Worth trying out, I may go back to it again.

I enjoyed this on tap at the brewery. What I liked about this beer was that it improved upon the base just slightly. The bourbon is very subtle, and to be honest that's what I was looking for.

Poured from a bomber into a snifter with a dark black body and a light tan head. Smells of deep roast and chocolate. Taste follows suit with roast grains, dark chocolate, and a hint of vanilla and oak. Relatively thin, but has a nice coating mouthfeel. Overall this is a decent porter, but it could use some more time in the barrel.
