Dark mahogany pour with thin off-white top and minimal lacing. Rich aromas of malt, roast. Flavors are malty with just a bit of smokiness. A bit too carbonated and thin to really get a good rich mouthfeel though. Not bad, but there are better close by on the shelf.

Generally I like Southern Tier and Porters so I thought I couldn't go wrong here. Smell better than the taste. Found it to be rather thin. Pretty enjoyable but not very memorable.

A: Pours an inky black with subtle amber highlights and a creamy, thin khaki head.
S: Gentle, muted aromas of dark chocolate, vanilla bean, heavy cream, and earthy ale hops take quite some time to express themselves on the nose.
T: Notes of roasted grain, sweet cream, burnt toast, coffee, vanilla bean, dark chocolate, leather, grass, herbs, and lemon rind express themselves on the palate. The finish is bitter, with burnt toast, herb, lemon rind, and grass flavors most apparent.
M: Definitely on the thinner side of medium and somewhat slick throughout. Carbonation disappears quickly. I'm missing the luscious mouthfeel I expect of most porters.
O: This porter never really comes together for me. The nose is a tad too gentle, the flavor profile is too jumbled, and the mouthfeel is too thin, too watery, and undercarbonated. I hope this is just a bad bottle because this is by far the weakest Southern Tier product I have tried to this point.

S - Chocolate and roasted malts. Faint hop presence. Relatively subtle.
T - Taste is much more roasted malts than chocolate. Taste is actually a bit watery. Does has a decent hop presence.
M - Light, thin mouthfeel. Finishes earthy and bitter.

pours a very dark brown but shows a lot of red color when held to the light, a surprising amount of which makes shows through. Head is tan, creamy, a little over an inch, and both lasts and laces the glass well.
Aroma is a tad lighter than the best examples, but sticking ones nose in reveals ample toasted malt covered with a chocolate, an herbal hop, no alcohol or diacetyl.
Flavor is quite good, full, sweet, balanced by a substantial bitterness - both from hops and a little from charred malt - which builds on the palate. A mild astringency is keeping it from an elite score. The char shows up much more in the flavor than aroma. Body is barely medium but creamy, carbonation soft - more would be too much with the bitterness/astringency of the hop/malt bill. All in all it is a solid porter that I'd have again. Seems to be somewhere between the brown and robust styles. recommended.

Appearance - Dark black/traces of brown, nice thick creamy 3 inch head, lots of lacing.
Smell - Dark fruits, malts, bitter coffee, chocolate, smoke, some added sugars and a little hop aroma also.
Taste - Bitter dark fruits and coffee are the first taste. Chocolate and some hops sneak in at the finish. It does have a robust flavor, dark bold smokey-ness. As it warmed more plum and rasin came out.
Mouthfeel - It is actually a little thin and not overly flavorful so its not a mouth wrecker at all. Tounge gets the malts, coffee and a little bitterness, palette gets remaining malts, some chocolate and hops. Finish is thin and weak.
Overall - Decent, better and worse porters out there. Its a little weak in the flavor department, but its smooth and easy to enjoy. Worth a drink to porter fans but dont expect a world class beer.

S: mid-grade coffee grounds, dark brown bread crust with a background whisper of molasses, nutty and naked dark roast malt grain... perhaps a faint whiff of orange-y hops
T: coffee, cocoa, dark caramel, lightly-medicinal booze mid-to-back... coffee roast, oily roasted nut, and dried, sun-burnt grassy hops in the finish... mildly acidic, mildly bitter-tannic aftertaste, a bit drier than expected... dark chocolate flavor builds on palate with each sip... overall taste has nice intensity but lacks breadth in its malt spectrum
F: up front, some sips have a bite to them, whether it's the carbonation and/or the acids from the hops and dark malts... the underbelly is a touch jelly-wobbly with a lightly-viscous skin... marginal residual slick but, again, the finish is rather hushed and a notch or two lighter than expected... alcohol at low low heat
O: the overall taste leans heavily on its roasted character, the accompanying bitterness has a nice little bite, and it's thankfully not that sweet... lacks a unique taste to make you a devotee, but it's solid enough and I could drink 1 or 2 more
