From BeerAdvocate Magazine #89 (June 2014):

Spicy, Bready, Banana, Taffy, Sweet

While the marketing for this beer may talk about the different types of malt and hops it is really the yeast that has dictated at least the dominant character. Bready malt and herbal hop meet an onslaught of banana taffy. Ripe fruity esters from the alcohol is layered over the caramel & bready malt flavor. Imperial? A term not needed here. Tasty? For sure.

The banana flavor and aroma was too over powering even though I really enjoyed the way the beer finished as well as the way it drank. It poured really nicely almost a a dark Caramel color with a great head. But again all I smelt was banana and all I tasted was banana which isn't my thing.

2014 bottle served cold in a Wizenbock glass

Poured a dark brown with a nice tan head. Lots of sediment that all went into the glass by choice.

Nose: spicy, nutmeg, banana bread, clove, vanilla, malty backbone.

Taste: liquid banana bread. Follows the nose perfectly. Malty sweetness, banana, clove, spicy and esters

What a delightful beer. I would definitely have this again.

From the 650 ml. bottle. Sampled on February 16, 2015

Mahogany brown pour with a big head. The head fades.

Malts, biscuit, overripe banana, and mild hop aroma.

Medium body. Astringent.

The taste is also bready with a meaty fruit character and a bigger bitterness than I expected.

Pours a hazy dark copper/chocolate brown color with Amber edges and a one finger off-white head that quickly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Sporadic spotty lacing left behind.

Intense, inviting aroma with a strong peppery spice presence that's countered by prominent sweet malt, bready yeast and citrus zest. Lots of black pepper and clove along with sweet caramel, toffee, chocolate and dark fruit. Decent bready yeast character with hints of banana and bubblegum followed by subtle orange peel sweetness.

Medium body with a zesty spice presence up front that lingers over the sweeter notes, prominent yeast and citrus sweetness into a tart, dry finish. Lots of clove and other peppery spices up front followed by hints of sourdough bread, banana and citrus. Sweet malt backbone with caramel, toffee and light chocolate followed by zesty orange peel in the finish. Doesn't quite live up to the aroma but this beer is refreshing and easy to drink with some nice flavors. I would have preferred a little more malt sweetness/silky chocolate notes to counter the heavy spice and pithy citrus.

22oz bottle poured into a Southern Tier tulip. 03/1?/14 on the bottle.

A: Pours a slightly cloudy light brown with a decent mostly white head on top. Leaves some nice lacing as the head slowly dissipates.

S: Big banana like aroma up front on this beer. A solid malt backing adds a bit of breadiness to the mix. A little bit of clove brings up the rear.

T: Well rounded flavor profile smoothes everything together into a tasty blend. Starts off with the banana flavor but it isn't as strong as in the aroma. Malt comes through in the middle giving it just a hint of roastiness, chocolate and carmel. Touch of alcohol on the back-end. Slight hopping is noticeable in the aftertaste.

M: Medium body with a creamy mouthfeel from the wheat. Moderate carbonation. Finishes crisp. Alcohol is well hidden in the mouthfeel.

Overall I'm impressed with this one. Not a style that many brewers tackle and Southern Tier does it justice. Perhaps it is not as well rounded as the German variants but it can still hold a candle.

I love it when you can really see the amount of sediment in an unfiltered beer. The appearance was a light hazel color with a fizzy head with bits of the sediment sticking to the side of the glass. The smell was sweet, almost banana, with almost a mint characteristic to the wheat smell. The taste was great. Full yet not too filling or overpowering. A lot of wheat and the end had a sweet taste about it from the amount of alcohol in it. Very refreshing despite it's weight. I didn't think there would be as many bubbles in a beer that felt this dense, but overall I thought this was a superb beer with a lot of great flavors and would definitely recommend for those who enjoy German or Belgium styles but wanted something a little different.
