Bottle to nonic pint glass, the appearance was a fairly dark brown color with a thin layer of white foamy head. Swiftly falls off to barely leave any lace. The aroma had a super sweet milk chocolate fudge maltiness. Lemon sweetness. Slight coffee beans and coffee creamer. The flavor leaned towards the sweet side comibining all of the previously mentioned aromas together. Subtle roast here, but not much. Aftertaste was milk chocolate with a touch of the lemon sweetness. Finish was long and sweet. The palate was between light and medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine. Body did feel low, though. Overall, Southern Tier trying to take a style that’s usually overly sweet and keeping it that way.

Soft opening at the new location in Pittsburgh. Get some lemon zest taste on this one. Leah liked this one. I was on the fence on this one. What a fun experience to usher in Southern Tier's becoming in Pittsburgh!

Poured into a standard pint glass: color is dark brown, head is light tan and presented 1 inch thick, then dissipated to a ring.

Smell is roasted malt transitioning strong coffee grounds, i see the lemon peel on the ingredient list and it is subtly noticeable.

Taste is roasted malt blended with coffee grounds, hints of lemon rind, then finishes with moderate bitterness. Lactose provides fuller flavor and lingerings sweetness.

Mouthfeel is smooth, moderate carbonation, lingering bitterness and more noticeable espresso qualities of smooth but bitter feel.

Overall s solid hybrid stout; the interplay of lactose and roast/coffee grind bitterness balances well.

2014 vintage; drank 1/4/15 @ the Yarchives.

Brown/black hue.

HUGE dark tan head; frothy lace.

Spicy black coffee nose.

Creamy medium mouthfeel.

Pepper heat & creamed coffee flavors up front; mild pickle juice finish. A gross mess; I couldn't finish 12 oz.

Overall - love the brewer and the style.

A: The beer purrs out a deep black body, a black cat with a a short, dense tan head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace trail on the glass.

S: The aroma contains grass, black coffee, roasted malts and a faint tinge of herbal hops. No char.

T: The taste up fronts with a strong black coffee flavor, then a roasted malt character with grassy, mild hops taking you to the long balanced finish. The after-taste is bitter-sweet licorice.

M: Crisp, with good weight, and smooth, medium body, carbonation, finish is balanced and slightly sticky.

O: As good as they get and I want another. Try 6.

Jet black in color with a light tan head about 1 finger in depth. The aroma is tons of roasted coffee and milk chocolate. The taste coffee, milk chocolate and a very slight hint of lemon peel; barely detectable. Mouthfeel is kind of light for a stout. Taste is overall pretty straight forward. Nothing special.

12 oz pint enjoyed at the Griffon pub in Niagara Falls, USA.

Appearance - nearly black with a coke coloured hue in direct light. A fine finger of tan head that recedes slowly.

Smell - lots of coffee like a fresh pot of strong coffee. Slightly vinous wine aroma backing. Interesting combo.

Taste - pretty much like the nose. Lots of coffee and a creamy creme Brûlée or caramel backing with toffee. Complex and delicious.

Mouthfeel - Super smooth and creamy but a bit thin at the end.

Overall - an excellent milk stout with bigger stout characteristics.

nice jet black pour. minimal head. nose of nice coffee and espresso. flavor follows suit with nice soft coffee and bitter chocholate. mellowed a little by the lemon peel which lingers faintly in the background but if you look for it you can find it. pretty normal feel. maybe a little thin but nice. good beer and would get again. not sure if it's a standout in the style but worth a shot.

This pours full-on black and no light gets through. It barely has any head from the pour and what little there was went away quickly. A couple small spots of lacing are all that is left behind. The aroma at times has faint hints of coffee, then lemon, then nothing. The body is much the same, although it doesn't lack flavor. It's just not particularly robust. The body is lighter and fairly heavy on the carbonation. Southern Tier can and does do better.

Poured a black body with one finger head that left lace patches running down glass. Aroma has this fruit scent that comes off more dark fruit than lemon but probably b/c not used to lemons in a stout; bits of roasted and coffee malts in aroma as well. Sticky, fuller bodied beer that is not overtly coffee but more of a subdued and light, almost lactic/sweet coffee bean that balances with roasted malts and this very minor citric fruit presence. Clean finish and somehow a little boozy as it warms, an interesting stout that is worth trying once.

Bottle DOB 12/16/15 into pint glass. Pours a thick, dark, oily black - light tan head. Initial impression is bitter expresso and roasted malt. No lemon, or else it's overwhelmed by the strong coffee flavor. Mouthfeel is medium (a little light for a stout, in my opinion) with low-ish carbonation (about right for a stout). Slightly bitter finish.

Perhaps i've grown tired of the coffee/stout combo, as I enjoy both separately. This just bores me. ST 2x Milk Stout is fantastic stuff, but the additional coffee flavors detract in my opinion. Fortunately I cannot taste any lemon unless in the form of additional bitter rind. This brew pours near-black with minimal head that fades to nothing. Aroma is the best part by far, with the lactose sweet combining with the roasty malt and coffee bean aroma. Flavor is fairly strong with the roast of barley and the bitterness of the beans more than offsetting the lactose. Finish is somewhat dry with lingering bitter. Not awful, I'd just rather have a straight-up milk stout.

Poured into a tulip. DOB 12/16/15

Pour looks like a black coffee, thick chocolate head, thick lacing. Great head retention.

Fresh ground mild Coffee, light lemon zest, milk chocolate.

Upfront roasted coffee with chocolate malt. A tad bitter as it goes down. Pretty sweet from the lactose. No lemon in the taste.

Creamy, silky smooth. Well carbonated.

Good milk stout brewed with coffee. Not much benefit from the lemon peel in the taste. I'd recommend it.

Poured 12oz bottle into snifter glass. 7.5% abv

Appearance- Pours a dark charcoal brown, near black in the glass with a thin light brown head.

Smell- Ground coffee, milf chocolate

Smell- Roasty sweet malt with some caramel soon gives notes a rich expresso and coffee flavors. Some hints of chocolate underneath the layers of coffee. Creamy lactose sugar in there towards the end compliments the coffee flavor quite well. Not unlike that of a latte. Mild bitterness with a dry finish.

Mouthfeel- Medium heavy in body with low-medium carbonation.

Overall- A complex and flavorful milk stout. The coffee and chocolate flavors are very good making this beer very smooth.

Look: Pitch black with a thin, sticky tan head that leaves lacing.

Smell: Fresh ground coffee, milk chocolate, caramel, vanilla.

Taste: Milk chocolate, caramel, white sugar and cream; black coffee/espresso, no discernable lemon peel, lingering coffee bitterness.

Feel: Medium, creamy, smooth.

Overall: While I would like more lemon peel, I love that this wasn't too sweet and had a great coffee taste.

This beer pours a very dark brown with a small mocha head. There is no retention and no lacing. The smell is roasted malts, coffee and a touch of sweet citrus. The taste is the same. The coffee is very bitter, but the citrus helps balance it out a little bit (although not enough). Feel is too light for my preference. Overall good not great.

12 oz bottled. DOB 12/16/15.

A: pours really dark brown. really dark. coffee hued head is frothy but doesnt last long.

S: coffee is definitely on the forefront of this aroma, however it isn't extremely robust. I expected a little more out of something with espresso in the name.

T: the coffee flavor is super strong and hits you right off the bat. and honest to God, I actually get a bit of the lemon peel in there as well. loads of coffee bitterness on the backend. lingering with roasted barley.

M: the body is medium almost on the boarder of being light and the carb is great for the style, not too high. would be a delicious nitro offering.

D: overall a good coffee stout. not great but pretty darn good. like I said earlier, wouldn't hate for a touch more espresso in the aroma. otherwise good stuff and worth trying if you like coffee beers.

Not a big expresso fan. Bitter coffee taste is not my thing. That being said...Look is a deep dark brown with a two finger head she poured into a pint glass. The smell is all coffee, bitter and sharp. The taste was milk sugar sweet on the front but quickly turns bitter with the coffee... too bitter for my taste. Feel is very smooth. Nice and easy to drink. A very good stout - even better for those who like a bitter coffee.

12 oz bottle served in a Belgian snifter after some warming.

Pours near black and nearly opaque with a skimpy, short-lived head that does manage to leave some spots of lacing.
The seemingly odd addition of lemon peel makes this distinctive, particularly in the aroma where it is quite evident. In tasting, the lemon [eel is more subtle and blends surprisingly well with the traditional coffee milt stout flavors. Lightly sweet up front, turning into a mildly bitter aftertaste.

A - Pitch black pour with a caramel thick lacing ring.

S - Dark roasted chocolate, coffee, and some cream.

T - Lots of coffee and dark chocolate roast with lemon on the back end. Lingering bitterness of dark chocolate and coffee roast. The label pretty much sums up this beer - the ingredients can be tasted. The lemon really doesn't start to surface (and even then, very minimal), until the very end.

M - Big creamy, medium body, and slippery.

O - This is a very nice stout, will definitely purchase again.

Black with minimal tan head.

The lemon does weird stuff with this. Vibrant bright fruity coffee on the nose comes through on the palate with a slightly tart element laid over the roastiness like a wet blanket, sort of defeating the purpose of a coffee stout.

Alcohol becomes apparent, for such a strange combination of flavors, you don't also want to be smacked in the face with booze heat. Being only 7.5%, it's just adds to its all around odd flavor.

12 oz bottle poured into a Savor snifter. Pours nearly pitch black with a finger of mocha foam. Aroma is mostly bitter coffee... as a coffee lover I do enjoy the smell.

The bitter coffee comes through big in the first sip. Thank goodness this has the lactose sweetness to help balance things a bit, but even so this is VERY bitter from the coffee and roasted malts. I'm not sure what the lemon peels really accomplishes in this brew - I'm not picking up any flavor and I wonder if they are contributing to the harsh bitterness.

Despite the bitterness, this is still an enjoyable brew. The sweet backbone is nice, and the coffee flavors are in full effect.

Appearance and mouthfeel are sublime, with a thick head and rich carbonation, but smell and flavor fall short. The addition of lemon peel adds an element that is honestly so strange and out of place. It doesn't meld well with the other flavors and makes this taste neither like a milk stout nor a coffee stout.
