I love Southern Tier and their 2x series is basically all-around great. My sister got a bottle of this and we split it.

It pours nicely and smells alright, but I'm not digging the taste. Something about it reminds me of dry wall or paint -- very faintly, but it's there. There's a definite espresso bean quality to this beer like I'd expect, but there's a surprising amount of just too much sweetness and lack of depth.

Between that weird chemical-like flavor I'm subtly getting, almost nonstop coffee, and "sharp" sweetness, I'm left with a pretty mediocre beer. Some coffee heavy beers are excellent ... this just isn't one of them. Worth a try, but that's about it -- it's just too "eh" with too much of a three-packets-of-sugar-in-a-black-cup-of-coffee vibe.

L- Good first head, disipates fairly quickly. Color-dark but translucent near boundaries.
S- Real good, balanced coffee, malt, citrus
T-Good coffee taste late
F- Well carbonated despite head dissipation. Rather thin feeling though.

To me, there was an astringent, off putting bitterness to this beer that was not coffee-like or lemony.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Brooklyn chalice.

Appearance: Pours midnight black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of tan head which settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A very roasty and rich dark malt forward aroma with a scent of coffee, chocolate, and slight citrus. Dark roasted barley malt with big hints of cold press coffee beans, dark chocolate, toast, biscuit, burnt caramel, smoke, and yeast. Sweet hints of lactose and sugar. Subtle citrus hints of lemon. Light hints of earthy hops. A very good roasty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a very roasty and rich dark malt driven taste with big notes of coffee, chocolate, and a little citrus. Upfront dark roasted barley malt with notes of cold dark roast coffee beans, dark chocolate, toasted bread, biscuit, caramel, yeast, and a little smoke. Sweet notes of lactose, cream, and sugar. Subtle taste of citrus lemon fruit. Subtle background notes of earthy hops. A really good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Rich, creamy, and fairly drying on the finish.

Overall: A really good Coffee Stout. Big roasty taste of coffee and chocolate with a nice light touch of lemon.

Pours dark and creamy. Coffee in your face. A bit on the bitter side. Nice and delicious.

12 oz bottle served in a Belgian snifter after some warming.

Pours near black and nearly opaque with a skimpy, short-lived head that does manage to leave some spots of lacing.
The seemingly odd addition of lemon peel makes this distinctive, particularly in the aroma where it is quite evident. In tasting, the lemon [eel is more subtle and blends surprisingly well with the traditional coffee milt stout flavors. Lightly sweet up front, turning into a mildly bitter aftertaste.
