Tangier India Pale AleTangier India Pale Ale
Notes: Where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean is the ancient city of Tangier. This confluence has made Tangier a cultural waypoint for millenia. From Greek heroes to Cold War spies and uprisings, Tangier has inspired thousands of legendary stories. It is written that before his battle with the giant Antaeus, Hercules rested in a nearby cave. But where myths end, our tale begins. Tangier is brewed as a Session India Pale Ale with spicy citrus aromas and stone fruit flavors. These flavors, with the addition of lightly roasted malts and brilliant hop bitterness, make Tangier a beverage as refreshing as it is exotic. The approachable 4.6% abv yields more time to enjoy the synergy between the tangerine peel and spicy, citrusy, Azacca hops. Enjoy Tangier in celebration of your epic adventure.

A: crystal clear; medium gold in color; 1 finger ivory head that receded to a splotchy cap; very little lacing;

S: floral tangerine;

T: follows the nose up front, then tangerine rind becomes prevalent through the finish; moderate bitterness at the end;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;

O: OK, but not something I would seek out;

A: Pours a crystal clear pale golden yellow in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation and faint bright yellow highlights. The beer has a finger tall sudsy foamy white head that reduces to a couple of small to medium sized patches of medium thick film surrounded by a very thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of citrus/tangerine rind and citrus/tangerine hops. Light to moderate aromas of grainy malts with a hint of spicy hops.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of grainy malts with a light amount of sweetness. That is followed by moderate flavors of citrus/tangerine rind, citrus/tangerine, citrus/grapefruit pith, and spicy hops which contribute a light to moderate amount of bitterness which fades away pretty quickly.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Crisp.

O: Easy to drink, sessionable, and very enjoyable. Refreshing on a warm spring evening.

Floral, resiny, tangerine aroma. More resiny than anything.

Flavor is very floral, herbal, and bitter at the finish. Becomes very grassy and the bitterness becomes earthy and a touch harsh. More bitter than I'd prefer. Citrus is more pithy than anything, with just a hint of sourness.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 4/22/2015. Pours lightly cloudy bright golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, melon, pear, lemon zest, orange peel, light pine, cracker, bread, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops, orange peel, and light-moderate pale malt notes; with good strength. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, melon, pear, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, cracker, bread, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Moderate amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, melon, pear, lemon/orange peel, pine, cracker, bread, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of bright citrus/tropical hops, orange peel, and light-moderate pale malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and light-medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish as expected of 4.6%. Overall this is a very nice session IPA style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical hops, orange peel, and light-moderate pale malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

I was excited for this, as I love tangerines and session brews. Unfortunately peels never equate to juiciness - which is what I wanted.

Good looking pale straw with strident carbonation. Aroma is typical fare for style and taste follows. I had to search for the tangerine and when I found out I wanted to pull it out and throw it at my neighbor

Decent

Picked this up last week in Totowa, having never had it before. Even though it's on the summer PhD list at the Cloverleaf, I wanted to have this in my rotation because I love most of Southern Tier's offerings and like a good session IPA with some flavor to it. Thankfully, this one fit that bill perfectly and hit and hit the spot. Had I not needed to go to work later today, I'd be cranking another one of these down in a short while!

This had a nice golden hue to the pour with a frothy head and a moderate amount of clingy lacing that stuck to the side of my glass, for the most part. Lots of tangerine, stone fruit, and other citrus in the nose, with the pith and rind coming out more in the taste. Quite a soft, soapy feel to this beer and it fit in well with the grapefruit and Azacca hops, giving this a unique flavor profile that didn't quite seem like more common varieties found in American IPA's. Gentle and cleansing, the carbonation was full and lively, lending to a nice mouthfeel to this as I could still feel the bubbles long after each sip went down. This had a bright taste to it that bordered on the edge of Champagne.

Booze? It's here somewhere but when you love something this much, you won't even need to find it. This won't win any awards but it'll make you smile and along with the Otter Creek Over Easy and the Brooklyn 1/2 Ale, showed how a session IPA can be filling, tasty, and enjoyable without hitting anyone or anything over the head. Grab a sixer of these and enjoy the summer - beers like this prove that IPA's under 5.0% ABV need a category of their own!

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into IPA glass.

Appearance: Hazy honey color with decent white head.

Smell: Mostly citrus, somewhat earthy, some spiciness.

Taste: Strong tangerine taste with some toasted malt backing. Somewhat bitter at the finish with earthy and spicy notes, and lingering tangerine.

Feel: Moderate carbonation, medium body (not as light as expected), dry finish.

Overall: Good hoppy session beer. The tangerine peel is well utilized.

Tangerines on the nose, but this beer just didn't seem to pack enough punch. The flavor is watered down and muted. It's also very thin. Just not a lot going for it other than drinkability. Not bad, but I much prefer Live.

Poured into a becher pint glass, the appearance was a sturdy burnt yellow straw to light orange color with a finger's worth of white foamy head that slid off at a pretty quick pace. Sly lace ran about.
The aroma reminded me of orange marmalade with a little bit of bitter grassy to citrusy hops. Light toast along with a little bit of tangerine seemed to round out the edges.
The flavor leaned towards the sweet side taking all of those aromas to meld fairly nice. Sly aftertaste of the orange marmalade, toast and tangerine, acceptable and clean.
The mouthfeel was almost medium bodied, seemed to be just a touch lighter to me with some good sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine. Some dryness in the finish.
Overall, a bit of an old school AIPA that I didn't mind for me. It's worthy to come back to if I found again, maybe not one to seek out.

Pours clear, gold in color with 1/3 inch head. Taste is big tangerines, candied orange, orange rind, and slight lemon. Sweet start with slight bitterness, slightly dry/bitter aftertaste, light body with high carbonation. This succeeds for me where Nu Skool fails. There is bitterness here, but it never totally overpowers all of the pleasant fruitiness of the hops. Really like the low ABV. This is one I could drink all summer. One of the better fruity non New England style IPAs I have had in a while.
