Notes: Back in 2014 we had the good fortune of finding a cache of rum barrels which we quickly filled with Pumking making what was affectionately called “Rumking.” We were lucky to have found more barrels, and in 2018, found some of the best we’ve ever used. This batch is at least as delicious as versions past.

Imagine our inimitable Imperial Pumking Ale as the captain on the high seas, flying the Jolly Roger. The ‘King sails for ports unknown in this limited release. Rum Barrel Aged Pumking has been kept like secret treasure in the hollows of the brewery, patiently awaiting discovery. Yo ho ho!

Enjoy Rum Barrel Aged Pumking now, or keep it hidden standing upright in a dark and cool place until you can say ‘anchors aweigh!’

2018 New label design, same great Rum Barrel Aged Pumking!

Decanted from a 16.9 oz (500 ml) bottle into a custom taster; 2019 vintage.
A: Pours a crystal clear, light amber color with a less than one finger, off-white head, low retention, and almost no lacing.
S: Aromas of rum, vanilla, rum, and caramel.
T: Sweet and boozy. Flavors follow the nose, but enough pumpkin to claim membership in the style. Low bitterness very much in balance.
M: Light to medium bodied with lively, but still moderate carbonation. Frankly, just not that boozy despite the ABV.
O: Really delicious, rummy version of the Pumpkin Ale style.

Clear burnt gold with a creamy off-white ring and thin film.

Smell is very boozy of peppery spiced rum, like a straight ass neat pour.

Taste too is like the largest addition of booze I think I have ever experienced in a beer, adding elements of vanilla and peppery rum that's super hot and thins out the base, making it slick and stinging.

Holy shit this is like a straight up shot. I think the ABV has dramatically increased since original release as well.

A - Pours crystal clear dark orange with no sediment, minimal carbonation, and no head or lacing ring.

S - Same aroma as Pumking only with some notes of rum in the aroma - very bready, with pumpkin spice.

T - Alot of us geeks have had Pumking and the easy way out would be to say it tastes exactly like Pumking only with rum in it. (!!!!!) Very bready, pumpkin spice, rum sweetness, vanilla, some honey, and graham cracker.

M - Light medium body with some alcohol warming on the way down.

O - I like Pumking and I also like barrel aged beers so I enjoyed this one. Was it worth an almost double the price tag? To try it once...absolutely - to try it twice? No.

Exceptional, Maybe the best Rum Barrel aged Pumpkin brew of the season. Very booze forward. You definitely notice the abv even in the flavor. Bottom line, this one is delicious.

Bottle purchased at Nathaniel Square Corner Store in Rochester, NY.

Pours a clear golden amber, with a small quarter inch head, and a little bit of webby lacing.

Smells much like the regular Pumking, with a tiny smidgen of rum, a lot more vanilla, and some butterscotch.

I wish the barrel was a bit more prominent here- it might have been a blend, or the beer wasn't in barrels for very long. The barrel-aging seems to have beefed this up a bit, as I get stronger vanilla from this, along with a much stronger butterscotch flavor. A lot of people get that buttery-ness from regular Pumking, and I never did. However in the rum BA version, I get it loud and clear. There's the typical pumpkin pie spicing that Pumking is known for, and some bready, doughy malts. The rum is very subdued, only really noticeable as the beer warms up a bit more.

This is medium bodied, much heftier than regular Pumking, with a lower amount of carbonation, and an oily, spiced mouthfeel. Very drinkable and tasty.

I don't necessarily think this better than regular Pumking. It's better than this year's subpar version, but it's not better than '12 Pumking, which was amazing. I want to see aged for much longer in the rum barrels- I can tell it wasn't for very long.

On the label in gold lettering: "BOTTLED AUGUST 2018"

The label for this year says: "13.4% ALC/VOL"

Appearance: The beer has a sun tea color with hints of gold and light orange. The beer has a moderate level of haze. It starts out with a short, white, fizzy head that fizzes out of existence very quickly.

Aroma: There is an aroma of rum as soon as the beer begins to pour. This aroma just shoots out of the glass and bottle into the room. Closer inspection of the beer just slams the face with more rum. It smells just like a mixed drink made with rum, having the scent of rum without burning the nostrils. It is probably important to note that while this wears the "Pumking" moniker it does not smell like pumpkin spice in the way that the current year's batch of Pumking does.

Taste: Up front there is a ton of rum followed by more rum in the middle. Towards the middle and at the end of the beer when the rum flavor has tapered off there is just a light bit of wood character that comes through and then the rum jumps back in at the end. There is also a flash in the pan of what tastes a bit like cinnamon and nutmeg but it pops up right around when the wood flavor shows up then it is drowned very rapidly by more rum. The aftertaste is a bit of a toss-up because sometimes there is a bit of nutmeg and other times it has nothing but rum. As a whole this beer feels off-balanced and leans heavily on the rum to develop its flavor profile.

Mouthfeel: It has a nice light body with an extremely mild woody bitterness. It has low carbonation and despite the drinkable characteristics of the beer, the rum makes this beer much more of a sipper.

Overall: The more you drink the beer the more a spice flavor develops. It also develops more spice flavor as the beer warms up a bit, so my recommendation is to let it sit out for a while before drinking it. It still doesn't have much spice flavor so if you are a fan of regular Pumking you will likely be disappointed in this years rum barrel version. If you are a complete nut for rum then this is for you. They should just call this variant Rumking because that's mostly what it is. As a whole it did deliver the rum flavor (and then some) so that was very impressive, but there wasn't enough spice to make me want to buy it again. It's decent enough as a one-off.

Received this as a Christmas present, it was purchased from the brewery itself. The label reads 2016 Vintage, 9.5% abv. Love the label which I'm assuming is a play on Captain Morgan but with the Pumking head.

L: Pours a light golden colour that glows orange when light hits the glass. The head disappears almost immediately after pouring it.

S: Smells almost exactly like pumpkin pie, with the crust, whipped cream and everything! Very nice. There's also vanilla and a mild sourness which I usually get with pumpkin beers.

T: You can taste the rum right away which I couldn't detect in the nose but it compliments the pumpkin spices quite nicely. Graham cracker, butter, pumpkin, vanilla and oak come through as well.

M: Medium body and carbonation, it's alright but I would've liked something more full-bodied with this alcohol content.

O: A great pumpkin beer, I haven't had the original Pumking to compare but I have to imagine it's pretty similar other than the rum flavour. My favourite pumpkin beer remains Great Lakes' Saison Dupump but this is a close second for me.

Love regularly Pumking but did not enjoy this. Way too boozy for my taste.

22 oz bomber poured into a tulip glass.

Look: Light amber color, looks like regular Pumking to me

Smell: Getting the cinnamon, nutmeg and other spices that make up Pumking, along with the obvious characteristics of rum

Taste: At first taste, you get the sweet, pumpkin-y taste of Pumking. But then comes...rum! The rum hit pretty hard and dominates the after-taste, but in a good way in my opinion. Very tasty! Even though it's barrel aged, I'm detecting no characteristics of the barrel, unfortunately.

Mouthfeel: Light and smooth. Has the creamy taste that Pumking is famous for.

Overall: I really liked this new beer. The rum compliments Pumking really well, and makes for an enjoyable beer. The only minor complaint I have is that there is no hint of any barrel traits. Doesn't matter, still very tasty and I'm glad I got a chance to try it.

Southern Tier makes some good beers, including this one, so I hope that this isn't a one time brew. Even though it was about twice the amount I pay for regular Pumking, I will probably grab another bottle since it's an outstanding beer. If you like Pumking (and rum) and you see it around, grab it while you can!

Served in a snifter glass from the bottle.

Appearance: Dark clear Amber with medium bubbles on the body creating a thin white head rising maybe half a finger's length. Drops to nada after half a sip.

Smell: Nice aroma which hints at pumpkin pie and light cinnamon. Almost appetizing to breathe in.

Taste: Sweet pumpkin and hard hit of liquor which actually reminds a bit of flan in a sense. Light malts with light spice notes coming from cloves of cinnamon and nutmeg. Borderline dessert.

Mouth: Sticky, medium carbonation. Sweet after-taste.

Overall: Good brew but a remix which isn't on par with the original. Definitely one to grab again but Pumking original version is a notch or two better. Salud!

22oz bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 13.99. Bottled 9/29/16. Served in a Pumking goblet.

Pours a deep orange amber with a finger and a quarter pale head. Retention amounts to a spotty, thin haze and thin rail around the edges that fail to leave any lacing to speak of.

Smells of pumpkin pie, spiced rum, vanilla and cooked sugar. It comes across like a slightly boozed up version of the base.

Tastes of pie spice, pumpkin, rum, burnt caramel, faint oaky char, graham cracker and a slight nip of alcohol. Seems to be all the flavor I've come to expect from the base plus some spiced rum and oaky barrel notes.

Medium full, vaguely chalky feel with modest carbonation. The aftertaste is like rum drenched pumpkin pie.

This is quite a pleasant riff on Southern Tier's classic. I still hold Pumking up as the gold standard for the ubiquitous pumpkin beer and this is a damned tasty barrel treatment. I'm glad they made enough this year for Georgia to finally get some and I hope to make this an annual tradition.

This was a pretty good beer. I am not a huge fan of rum barrel aged beers, so the fact that I liked this beer was a bit of a surprise.
