I consider Southern Tier a top notch brewer, but this particular offering fell short of expectations.

For a summer wheat, I look for something light, crisp, with a taste low on bitterness. What I got from this was the exact opposite. Though not necessarily a bad thing, it just wasn't what I was expecting when I crack open a summer wheat. I suppose it's their spin on it, but it's not spin I quite like. From the bottle it pours an also-ran amber color with a thick head that sticks around only for a little while, but has a decent lacing down the glass. The scent was mostly lavender (which is my code word for soapy) and unfortunately it translated to the taste as well (not as bad though.) The feel was mostly light but with a strong aftertaste of that lavender I'm not to keen on. Overall, it really isn't a bad brew, I'm sure there are folks out there that like this, but it's certainly not one of the STs I'll be on the look out in the future.

A fun summer brew. My theme this summer seems to be good lighter beers to drink while grilling out back. This one definitely fits the bill.
Pours a straw color with a decent head; ok retention.
Aroma is wheat like, fruity..,I'm thinking light citrus, pear and a hint of apple. None of the banana aspect I associate with Hefeweizen.
Light in the mouthful.. drinks pretty fast. Light fruit flavor with a dryish palate. Unlike Hefeweizen, the hops sets this one apart. Mild spicy hops that add depth and complexity without being overwhelming.
A nice summer seasonal.

Comes in a golden yellow with 3/4" white head on top. Aroma was grain, wheat and a little bit of lemon.

Mild stuff especially for Southern Tier who usually pushes the envelope. When you use the word hop in a beer name, it gets expectations up for a hoppy experience. This was a let down in that regard. Its just standard summer ale fare. No off flavors, just a pale malt and wheat experience with mild lemon and grapefruit impressions from its moderate hopping.

This brew pours a clear straw color with a small white head and light lacing. Low carbonation.

The smell blends together wheat, malt and hops very well. The wheat and the malt dominate, the hops are light but definitely present.

The taste follows the nose with wheat and bready malt on the front and then a light hop finish. The feel and finish are a little oily due to the hops; overall, this is a nice lightly hopped wheat beer.

Bought a 6 pack from Southtown Beverages late Sept 2015. Served cold in a Duvel tulip.

Look: hazy lemon yellow, thin white head

Smell: fruity, peaches in syrup

Taste: some eucalptus, light menthol.

Feel: slightly thin

Overall: it's ok

L: A slightly hazy gold pour crowned by a clingy 1” off-white foam collar. S: Light wheat, fruit, light hops. T: Wheat flavors seasoned with fruit finish with a moderate to a moderately high bitter hop accent. F: Medium light to light body, medium carbonation. O: A hop forward, refreshing wheat beer.

Smells like a typical wheat beer, light and kinda fruity. Pours a nice clear golden color. The head is small ,thin and white and very little lacing. It taste like an IPA at the start and ends slightly dry. It seams to be a mix between an IPA and a wheat beer but leans more toward an IPA.

Fantastic summer seasonal, as good as most. Would love it in cans please.

A: Clear straw color. Bright white head that laces only a bit. Look matches the crystal clear flavor to come.

S; Medium hop mostly of herbal lemon grass over a back of bready, wheaty core. Appetizing, will be a great food beer, for fish, garden and summer dishes.

T Follows smell. Citrusy hop flavor with lemon zest spice. Clean and crisp bitterness with only a bit of wheat backing. simple and bright, it is freshness, crispness, and a kind of lemony, orange clear finish that is a perfect match for summer food.

F: Light to start and finish, with a cracker-like dryness that refreshes and leaves you in a great place. kissy.

Another winner from Southern Tier.

A summer wheat beer that is essentially a Pale Ale or small IPA that actually taste like something: good Citrusy hops. Low Abv, crisp lemon grassy wheat. Excellent body and carbonation
IMHO summer beers suck and wheat beers suck. This is a wheat pale ale that is great. This beer, a German style Pilsner or a a real hefeweizen are the only way to go in the heat. Flavor and crispness combine perfectly. Tonight I had one and one SN Hop Hunter. Hard to say which is better

Straw in color with a half finger of head. The nose is earthy. The flavor is pretty standard as pale wheats go (not terribly funky) with a light sweet note on the finish.

BOD 2/23/15. Pours a clear gold with a touch of amber. Normal head volume, lacing and retention.

Nice nose of citric hops (lemon), hints of banana and a base of biscuit.

Medium bodied with a very smooth texture that approaches slick. Perfectly carbonated with a rich prickly effervescence from the middle on.

The flavor profile is world class - intense, complex and perfectly balanced. It begins with a clean and crisp wave of mild hop flavor (lemon, light orange and a bit of pine). The middle brings a light bitterness with a hint of zest. Wheat and biscuit make their appearance between the middle and finish. It finishes clean and crisp with a wonderful effervescent burst that leaves you with a slow blended fade of all the previous flavors and a hint of phenolic clove.

On tap @ Claddagh

Appearance: Definitely looks the part. Its dark in here to detect the exact color, but it is very pale in color. One finger white head

Smell: Earthy hops, earthy grains, bready malt

Taste: a ton of grainy stuff goin on here, but its done right. Moderate hops to balance it out

Mouthfeel: Heavy light body; Crisp and refreshing, with a moderately dry and bitter finish

Overall: i dont typically go after this style of beers, but its $2.50 pints, so i couldnt go wrong. Let me just say that its better than i expected. The grain bill sorta gets overwhelming towards the end of the glass, but it has a solid hop backbone and its something id enjoy again if the opportunity presents itself (like after a hard days work such as today). If you want a refreshing, moderatly hopped wheat ale, check this one out. Cheers!

Thin head, ok lacing. Clear bright yellow. Smell of lemon rind primarily. Taste has lemon rind up front with an herbal hop finish. Hops are restrained and malt is present adding a bit of sweetness. Biscuity. Drinkability is off the charts. Wheat adds a little body but this is light overall with a crisp off dry finish. This is the beer that Sam Adams Summer wishes it was. (No lemon added).

Drank it straight out of the bottle so I can't say anything about the look. It's light refreshing, with a touch of bitterness. Nothing special but a good summer beer with more flavor than many summer beers.

Edit: poured one into a glass. It's bright, gold. I had the second on a hot day and boy is it a thirst quencher. Generally, I find "summer" beers lame, but I think this is the one for me.

Bottle marked (etched) but unreadable served at 40 degrees into nonic
Aroma of citrus, lasts through entire glass
Head average (4 cm, aggressive pour), white, frothy, diminishing to irregular frothy ring and layer
Lacing good – complete lacy rings of tiny to medium bubbles
Body light yellow, clear
Flavor begins bitter with no distinct hop or malt flavor, no alcohol, no diacetyl; unable to tell if any wheat was harmed in making this beer; ends bitter
Palate light, thin and watery, lively carbonation

Very light in color; golden clear body.

Poured from the tap into the glass; smell was extremely fresh. Could smell some malts and some bright earthy grains; definitely evocative of summer. Light on the hops, but present in the smell.

Taste was clean, crisp, and fresh; the malts and grains stood out throughout the beer, tinged with citrusy overtones. Hops made more of an entrance at the end, but were not overpowering, merely added to the collection of excellent summery tastes.

Mouthfeel was smooth, crisp, and clean.

Overall, I'd buy this beer again, either on tap or bottled. Giving it a 4.5 and will be looking out for it this spring/summer.

Personal note: first had this beer at Ken's Pizza and Pub on Church Street in Burlington, going out to celebrate with family.

Hop Sun (Summer Wheat Beer) - Southern Tier Brewing Company. Poured from the bottle into a glass, this beer's head is two fingers thick with not too much lacing, and a medium gold clear body.

I smell biscuit malts and bright, earthy grains. Nothing really going in in the hop category.

Tastes like yeasty malts, a faint touch of hops, and a bit of citrus at the very end. Quite a collection of "summer tastes" , indeed. Nice and and refreshing.

The mouthfeel of this brew is quite smooth and clean.

I'll give Hop Sun (Summer Wheat Beer) - Southern Tier Brewing Company a 4.25 overall. This will probably will be a new warm weather staple for me.

Hop Sun (Summer Wheat Beer) brewed by Southern Tier Brewing Company, with an ABV of 5.10% This brew pours out a nice amber color with a nice white head. The smell is rich with flavors. You pick up grains and hops. Now for the taste, it smooth but bold with flavor. You pick up on grains and malts in the taste of this brew. Then there is mild bitterness of hops at the end of this brew. Southern Tier Brewing Company did a nice job with this one. There is nothing overpowering about this brew. Hop Sun has a nice balance to it. The mouthfeel is nice clean and refreshing. This brew is a nice summer wheat beer. I like how Hop Sun (Summer Wheat Beer) is different from most wheat brews on the market. One thing that stands out with Hop Sun is, this brew is filtered. Overall I'm giving Hop Sun (Summer Wheat Beer) a 4.5 out of 5. I would buy this brew again.

Pours a straw yellow with a fizzy head that dissipates quickly. The smell is full of citrus and floral notes to make a very bright scented beer. The taste was equally bright with hop notes coming first and then a bright wheat flavor that left hints of banana and clove to the beer. Very refreshing.

06/09/12 At Shorty's 9th Ave. NYC. Had 1 on tap. Not as refreshing as they like to think. This brew is pleasant, but not a long distance summer quaffer. I like it but will keep looking for that perfect...whatever.

S- crisp wheat with some toasted malt, fruity hops with berry notes, herbal notes with some lemon grass, slightly bready finish

T- citrusy hop flavor up front with an emphasis on lemon, clean toasty malt with slight sweet bready flavors, crisp wheat on the finish with an herbal hop linger

M- medium body with moderate spritzy carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a crop dry finish

O- simply profiled, yet well balanced and drinkable. A worthy option for those hp summer days

I never expect much from a summer beer, most of them are too thin and watery for my liking, and I figure if it's really that hot out, I'd be drinking water anyway. Southern Tier's Hop Sun is one of the exceptions; a beer that I enjoy drinking, particularly in warmer weather or during cookouts.

It pours a light golden color with moderate head. It smells of lemony hops, and tastes like lemony hops and wheat. It goes down smooth and is refreshing while at the same time not sacrificing on flavor.

Poured into a pint. Very golden in appearance. Smell is citrus/lemon and wheat. Nice taste. A lot of the reviews call this "crisp" and a nice summer beer and I would agree with that, although there is nothing outstanding about it. I will pick it up again sometime on a hot day.

This is a nice summer beer with a crisp taste and a great feel in the mouth. It has a good aroma but I felt it could be richer. The flavor was great, as was the after taste. Its appearance was a clear clean wheat beer which was perfect for what it is. It is definitely the type of refreshing beer that I often crave in the summer, which makes it a great pick after a long warm day.

Overall it was a good beer that I would recommend to others.
