The Blackwater Imperial Stout Series is full of delicious dessert beers, with one exception: Oat, our Imperial Oatmeal Stout. Pouring black as night, with a mocha colored head, big dark flavors of molasses and bitter malts conspire to hide the high alcohol content.

Brewed with 2-row pale malt, oats, caramel malt, barley flakes, chocolate malt, black malt, Columbus and Willamette hops, this beer is chock-full of what a real imperial stout should be brewed with. We’re brewing it expressly for the turning seasons. It’s a great beer to kick back with on a cool fall evening, or cellar some away for when the snow starts to fly.

2009 batch Poured from a bomber into my Southern Tier Tulip glass.

This is one of my favorite offerings from Southern Tier so I thought it was time I gave it a review (My first review as well).

Pours dark brown and nearly black with a modest amount of head that disappears quickly. It tastes of sweet malts with some chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly creamy. I really enjoy drinking this one and will purchase again.

A very mild head that dies quickly. Nearly black in color where no light can shine through.

Cocoa with cream aroma

Extreme doesn't begin to describe this beer. Strong black patent malt bitterness (similar to coffee grounds). After the aroma, I didn't expect this much flavor. Brandy-like warmth from the alcohol, particularly in the swallow.

Could this be too much of a good thing? I certainly could not drink this regularly.

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber into a pint glass. From 2009 and my bottle says 11.0% ABV.

a - Pours a dark brown with moderate carbonation evident and about an inch and a half of tan head.

s - Smells of chocolate, roasted malts, caramel, and oatmeal. More chocolate than oatmeal to me, and I didn't smell any alcohol as some have.

t - Some oatmeal and nice malts. Also some dark fruits? Definitely getting some alcohol in the taste.

m - Full body and low carbonation. Some alcohol warmth.

d - Pretty good smell but I thought the alcohol was a bit too much in the taste. I felt as though it dominated some of the other flavors, and it definitely felt the 11% ABV it says it is. Would like to try again perhaps after some cellaring.

Served in a snifter at The Barley House.

Another nice tap sighting out here in the 'Burbs. It pours a deep obsidian topped by a finger of light brown foam. The nose comprises wheat, oats, grass, very light chocolate, flowers, and light honey. The taste holds notes of roasted malts, light chocolate syrup, toasted oats, vanilla, and a hint of tobacco somewhere in the back. The body is a light heavy, with a light carbonation and a chewy feel. Overall, a very nice and tasty bit o' stout. Another win for ST.

The beer is near black and opaque with a thick beige head. Excellent retention with ample lacing cascading down the walls of the tulip. The aroma offers roast, alcohol heat, oats, bread, chocolate. The taste pretty much follows suit, with perhaps a bit more oat presence than was indicated in the aroma. Lots of flavor, but I find the alcoholic heat a bit obtrusive, keeping this beer from being great. Crackers and biscuits linger, as the beer finishes dry. Medium to full bodied with appropriate carbonation. A solid beer. I bet this would age gracefully.

A – Light khaki head towers above the glass. Fantastic retention and nice lace. Dark brown/black body.

S – Light raisin, tart red wine, light oat, and lactose sugar.

T – Acidic coffee and a dry red wine fruitiness. Semi-sweet oat center. Rolling malt and dark chocolate backend. Acidity shows up again on the finish.

M – Thick, smooth, full roasty body.

O – A bit acidic and not what I expected out of an oatmeal stout, but the profile definitely grew on me throughout the night.

Appears a burnt dark black completely opaque shields all and any pigment from the visible light spectrum forms a large thicket of mocha tan head leaves light even lacing as it dwindles down. Aroma is full of burnt roasted malts with dark chocolate cream accented notes with alcohol and ripened fruit blended in. Soft sweet oatmeal girth and a deep herbal minty hop profile express themselves as well. Roasted malt alcohol burn with a chocolate liqueur quality upfront herbal bitterness heavy sweetness raisin and plum galore, as it warms flavors rush the palate even more I have loved every Blackwater Series offering this one is no different loads of flavor oatmeal added with brown sugar sweetness. Mouthfeel is full bodied syrupy thick ass texture, a beer I can definitely bite into carbonation is even carries this heavy body pretty well. Drinkability is great a whole 22oz is my limit but I’m willing to share this one next time around, although I might have to track down a whole case.

Brewed fall 2008, Enjoyed fall 2008.
Pours a Dark brown with the faintest of ruby when held to light. Smallish tan head that disappears quickly but leaves some lace on the glass. Smells of roasted malts, some alcohol, coffee and bitter chocolate. Taste is chocolate, then some hops hit you, bitter roast and a bit of alcohol in the end. Mouthfeel is Creamy smooth, thick body, low carbonation. This is a good brew that I think will be great with some age. I think the alcohol needs to tone down a bit, but I Love how creamy smooth this one is.

Pours a solid blackness with a thinnish tan head that quickly dissipates. Aromas of coffee chocolate and molasses dominate the nose. There's a faint dark fruit and a hint of earthy hop aroma as well. The flavor is roast and chocolate with brown sugar, molasses and still a touch of ethanol. Light dried fruit flavor and earthy hop bite. Thick viscous body with a sweet roasty syrupy mouthfeel and a light level of carbonation. This one seems to do really well with a bit of age on it. The flavors seem to have melded nicely and the alcohol while still present has toned considerably.

Pours pitch black with a thin tan head. Flavor is very sweet. Almost comes off as a milk stout, and the 12.5% certainly doesn't show up at all. Kind of tangy and I'm not sure I like it. Have had this in the past and I don't remember it being like this. Sure it's smooth, but there are no real strong characteristics moving me here. Feel is smooth and slick on liquid with a low carbonation. Drinkable, yes. Just wondering if this bottle is not at its best.

Pours a pitch black with a thick layer of brown head that has great retention. There's a very light aroma; roasted malts, faint chocolate, and mild hop character. The taste is chocolaty and roasty with a very smooth, rich full body. There is also a smooth, citrusy hop bitterness. This is full boded and well carbonated.

It's well balanced, delicious, and very drinkable.

Pours black with a tan head that gives an espresso look. The head falls to wisps, leaving some thin lines of spotted lacing.

The smell is of dark maltiness - some coffee/chocolate though neither really stand out - a general dark maltiness fits description well enough. Boozy.

The taste is of sweet dark malt with a bittering touch. The alcohol comes through strongly. Chocolate syrup with thick caramel makes this one sweet and dessert-like. Hot, sweetish finish.

It is rich and hits full-bodied, but not too syrupy. There is a certain smoothness despite noticeable alcohol.

This is a slow-sipper. Personally, not as impressed as I was hoping to be, but an interesting beer, nevertheless.

Bomber bottle, the etched on the bottle label says this one was brewed in the "fall of 2007"....fresh is good. Pours black and thick, carbonation is fairly low as a vigorous pour only lifted a very minor dark tan film. NIce ringed, fine bubble sheeting. Nose just mildly of some sweetness and then some roasty malts. Nice sipper, plenty of roasted malts, cafe au lait, and hints of smokey, earthyness. The finish here goes on and on, sliky smooth, subtle sweetness, hints of tropical fruits, yeah I taste em...Rich and viscous, more quality, COMPLEX beer from Southern tier. Well done.

Solid, impenetrable black, perfect roasty tan head.

Aroma is right on the money, too. Roasted black malt, flaked oats, grainy a little. Some chocolate coming through, but still essentially dry.

Hefty mouthfeel, a big, solid jump on the mouth, then it's silky smooth. Cocoa meets oats, yum...and then the booze creeps in...

Dark fruit pops up, and bumps into the cocoa/coffee/oat feel. Mighty complex malt character here, and terrifically tasty.
And here comes the booze...

I still don't think oatmeal stouts need to be "imperialized", but they didn't ask me what they should do, did they? On the other hand, maybe it's an Imperial Stout with oatmeal. Oat tastes almost exactly like an RIS and an oatmeal stout blended. With over the top booze.
And it's damn good!

Poured on-tap into a pint glass, presenting with a jet black and viscous look, with a huge, creamy, smooth milk chocolate colored head. Aromas of nut and bread, with some dark fruit sweetness. Flavors are dark cherry bittersweet, coffee, and a steady backbone of dark chocolate. The aftertaste is bittersweet dark chocolate, and the finish is ridiculously smooth. Very tasty brew!

Pours a black color. 1/7 inch head of a tan color. Poor retention and poor lacing. Smells of alcohol, sweet malt, chocolate, oat, slight tart malt, and a hint of dark citrus. Fits the style of an American Double / Imperial Stout. Mouth feel is smooth and crisp with a low carbonation level. Tastes of alcohol, oat, sweet malt, slight chocolate, slight roasted malt, and a hint of dark citrus. Overall, good body, blend, complexity.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a snifter...

A - Roasted mocha body with some residual mahogany hues, minimal beige head, no lacing, kind of disappointing though we are pushing 10% ABV..

S - Ground oats, bitter dark chocolate notes, coffee, caramel malts with some faint toffee notes. The lasting impression is alcohol on this, not too appealing in my opinion. What starts out with a beautiful bouquet of flavors I look for in an oatmeal stout, end rather unfortunately.

T - Whoa, this is sweet. Cloying sweetness and warming bourbon coat the palate. Thankfully, it's not enough to prevent the other great flavors this has coming through: hot spice oatmeal, dry grains, and a hint of coffee beans. No chocolate or anything more diverse here, for me.

M - Not bad, a bit higher on the carbonation than I'd like, but this bottle is rather fresh and would probably mellow with some age on it. The mouth feel is thick enough without going overboard.

D - I couldn't get through the bottle. This is definitely one to sip and split, which seems to be the case with a lot of the Blackwater Series beers from Southern Tier... The sweetness and alcohol esters overtook my palate and seemed to burn it out.

It's a nice beer, but probably only one glass nice. I wouldn't buy this one again, instead I'd go for the Choklat which has an even higher ABV and seems to mask the alcohol better than this. Both are sweet, but the Choklat is more tasty, though it is a chocolate vs. oatmeal stout. Take it for what it's worth.

A: poured was black water like the label reads with absolutely no head to speak of and left zero lacing sticking to the glass.

S: off the bat I noticed thr aroma was quite boozy alongside unique oatmeal cookie notes but was also able to detect caramel and chocolate notes as well.

T: the chocolate was much more potent on the palate with caramel and oatmeal cookie accents but did feel it was pretty boozy. I felt there was slight astringent character from coffee like notes.

M: the brew was light to medium in body which for me was quite thin for a stout. It had a very low amount of carbonation but had a sweet, boozy,thin, and slight astringent dry finish.

D: it drank really good considering the boozy character but IMO was thin for the style; it was still tasty.

Appearance: black in color with a 2" head that slowly falls. Some lacing develops.

Smell: roasted malts, alcohol, and some cocoa is picked up by the nose.

Taste: roasted malt sweetness with some bitter dark chocolate, prunes, mild bitterness, and a good bit of alcohol. The oats seem to mellow out the malt profile a bit.

Mouthfeel: lightly prickly at the start. Smooth almost syrupy at the finish. Heavy in body. Aftertaste is long on the flavor profile.

Drinkability: decent but a real slow sipper here. This bottle will last a good part of the evening. One bomber is more than enough though.

Picked up a bomber from Abe's Cold Beer and shared it with a couple friends. It poured pitch black with a short tan head. This is by far one of the smoothest impy stouts I've had. I'd give a higher MF score, but as the beer warmest a lot of alcohol came forward. Otherwise the flavor is a big, rich mix of candied cocoa with a little mocha around the edge. It reminds me of Sam Smith's oatmeal stout on steroids.

Pours a deep, dark black with a small half inch head and no lacing due to how oily this mofo is.

Smells like rich chocolate, vanilla, some caramel, and sugar.

The taste is similar. Very sweet oatmeal stout, much like Southern Tier's other stouts. It tastes great, though. A little bit of roasted malt washed over by Hershey's syrup, vanilla ice cream. Huge malt flavor here, with a little bit of toasted oatmeal taste as well. A bit of caramel, as well. The flavor does get a bit cloying after a while.

Thick, gloopy, oily body, this one is just molasses like. Awesome mouthfeel. Low, almost non-existent carbonation, at the very least it's not noticeable. Would be more drinkable without the intense sweetness.

An extreme oatmeal stout if I ever drank one. If it was a little less sweet, it would be much better.

A - Black. Body appears to be medium. Small amount of light brown head.

S - Roasted malts, sweet dark caramel, brown sugar, chocolate.

Pours a deep black color, some carbonation, nice little fizzy dark tan head, which leaves minimal sticky lacing. The nose is malty, chocolaty, toffee, roasty, vanilla, and caramel. The taste is sweet, malty, lots and lots of roasty/chocolate/toffee tones. The alcohol is hidder pretty well for a brew this high. Medium body. A well rounded brew. Very drinkable, another awesome brew from ST, highly recommended. Thanks Joe.

The beer pours a deep dark black color with a thick frothy brown head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is great. It has a rich, warm black malt scent that is quite powerful. It is full of black patent and some chocolate malts along with a very dry oatmeal aroma. The taste is excellent as well. It is thick and rich with black malts. It goes down slow and warms on the finish. It is really dry and earthy. The mouthfeel is good. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a great drinking oatmeal stout. It's one you want to drink slow, but it's a good drinker. I have been waiting for the local "ale house" to put this on tap for some time now. I was worth the wait.

Continuing the tradition of the First and Second Unorganized Invitational, I bring the start of the Third Unorganized Invitation. For those unfamilair, the "unorgainized" theme is for a stretch of beers which I celebrate the end of the school year with. This year, given it was the year I graduated, I poured more money into the one. The first one is Southern Tier Oat. Are you ready? Let's go:

Inot a snifter it goes, no head forms on top this dark liquid. That's not a good sign. Well, the smells is nice. The nose is tickled with licorice, dark fruits, figs, and fudge brownies. Please don't taste flat...

There's a light sizzle of carbonation on the palate. It is a thick beer that clings to the palate, but slips off at the same time. It tastes more like mocha than oatmeal. A mild pinch of alcohol, which is a little hot, pairs with an astringent roasted note. As it warms, it become sweeter, and the booze is less felt. Mocha and hot fudge begin to take over. The beer becomes smoother as well.

A little oommph seems to be missing from the overall picture to warrant a higher taste score. Still, it's fairly good. Drinking a bomber of this is stretching it; better in smaller samples.

That's one beer down in the Third Unorganized Invite (T.U.I.), and hopefully the upcoming competition meets my high expectations.

Thanks to Exiled for sharing this bottle. I had been looking forward to this beer for a long time.

The beer pours a dark brown to black color with a tan head. The aroma is heavy on the roasted malt and chocolate. The flavor is great, with roasted malt and chocolate up front as well as some burnt malt. You also get some oat flavor as well as the creaminess in the mouthfeel that you expect from oats. The alcohol is very well hidden in the beer. Thick mouthfeel and low carbonation. A very nice imperial stout.
