An Imperial Wheat Ale brewed with blood orange juice, tangerine and grapefruit peels. 3 Citrus Peel Out is the newest in the company’s seasonal Imperial Series. It features an 8.5% ABV, a grain bill consisting of 35% wheat, CTZ & Mosaic hops and a walloping amount of citrus. Over four and a half pounds of tangerine & grapefruit peel per barrel accompany tropical flavors from Mosaic hops and an added boost of blood orange juice during fermentation. This refreshing brew sits around 30 IBU and its nice citrus pith complements the bitterness. Residual sweetness helps accentuate the fruity character and masks the 8.5% ABV well.

Southern Tier founder, Phin DeMink notes; “We encourage craft beer connoisseurs and folks new to craft to enjoy it straight up or served on the rocks with soda & wedge of fresh fruit. We’ve loved it with simple syrup & a shot of our favorite spirit. No matter how you serve it, 3 Citrus Peel Out is the summer refresher you’re looking for.”

From the 22 oz bomber in a snifter. This excellent wheat ale pours a
nice and clear shimmering orange tinged golden color with a nice head
of white dissipating foam that settles to a thin ring with some nice sudsy
lacing. Nose of heavy citrus of orange and grapefruit with heavy herbal hops
included. One dimensional but a very nice dimension it is. Flavors exceed the
nose with herbal hops and heavy citrus notes of grapefruit and pith with orange
zest and touches of lightly warming booze with a hint of soft wheat. Very much
like a craft version of an imperial shandy. Decent mouth feel; medium light
body, lightly coating from all of the citrus, medium light carbonation that is
just right for this hybrid style, and zesty citrus forward finish.

Overall, a unique and nicely done brew. Not everyone's cup of
ale, but it is a nice change of pace.

Cheers

Pours a pale yellow. I don't get a real strong citrus aroma. You get a blast of orange and grapefruit with a bitter alcohol finish. Smoother than I thought it would be. Good for an imperial but best enjoyed one and done with this one.

Southern Tier Brewing Company "3 Citrus Peel Out"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "DOB 03/07/18 12:31PM"
$4.49 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Wow, it's clear, well just slightly hazy, but I thought with it being a wheat beer it would be cloudier. It's a beautiful rich golden color beneath a thick head of white. The aroma is citrusy as might be expected, and actually smells like fresh citrus rind. I'll go with orange and soft lemon as the two main notes although the label states that it's grapefruit and tangerine peels. I guess I should have said tangerine instead of orange, oh well, I'm not sure I could actually smell the difference between the two though. Taste, yes, but smell, no. Moving forward... ooh boy, that's juicy and refreshing. I clearly get the tangerine with a little bit of sharpness up front, and then grapefruit with its raspiness in the back. I'm also clearly getting the grapefruit in the nose as well. My only question now is, is this going to become a kind of a one-trick-pony kind of beer, or is there more to it. There's certainly depth to the fruitiness, and some malt in the flavor, and I guess hops, there's got to be some citrusy hops at work, but will it seem like just a juicy, fruity, beer or something more. Only a longer sampling will tell. So, bitterness... it's not that bitter at all but it remains balanced. And how strong is this? 8.5%, that's not bad, and I don't sense the alcohol at all. What about mouthfeel? Medium bodied and gently crisp. The light acidity helps there as well, but I'm not sure if I'd like it with a little more carbonation or not. I guess not. So as I'm progressing through the glass I'm liking it more and more. It's got a nice balance between the fruit flavors, the wheaty malt, and the light acidity and light sweetness of the malt. It's very refreshing, and very drinkable. As it's warmed a little bit, and my senses have become accustomed to the fruits more of the "beer" character of it is coming through and I don't think it fits the one-trick-pony mold that I was thinking of earlier. It's a great spring or summer beer but I think I could drink this year 'round. Very nicely done and certainly worth seeking out.

From the bottle, it pours a nice clear golden color with a modest head, soon diminishing to a ring. Citrus is apparent in the nose. In the mouth, citrus definitely comes through, finishing with citrus on the tongue.
