We brewed Salted Caramel to pay tribute to one of our favorite sweets. In the same vein as salted caramel chocolates and truffles, our Salted Caramel stout is the perfect balance of sweet decadence and savory salt. Perfect alone, or enjoyed as a float.
Southern Tier Salted Caramel takes a base imperial milk stout (brewed with lactose), Himalayan pink sea salt, and caramelized sugar, to mimic the flavor of the candy. Much like other beers in the Blackwater Series, this dessert beer finishes at 10% alcohol by volume.

Served in a snifter
This beer pours thick and black. It is briefly topped with less than an inch of tan head that leaves no lacing.
The smell is intense vanilla and caramel with some smatterings of chocolate.
The taste is just as intense as the smell. I get loads of caramel with a little chocolate to back it up. There is also a lot of vanilla flavor. The salt is noticeable in the finish and into the aftertaste.
The mouthfeel is thick and syrupy with low carbonation.
I love a good dessert stout, and Southern Tier knows how to make them. It is just as delicious as the other Black Water beers.

Smells of chocolate syrup, caramel, sea salt, vanilla, pecan, and oak.
Flavor is of caramel, chocolate syrup, biscuit, mesquite, vanilla, burnt oak and lactose.
Body is full and viscous. Light tingly carbonation on the roof of the mouth. Boozy warmth going down.
Very tasty dessert beer. Drinks very slow, intensely rich. Worth trying.

Good smell and great taste, which is 100% salted caramel buttercream. Tastes exactly like a cupcake, not a dark salted caramel chew but a light frosting. Dark brown but barely see thru, thick tan head that fades slowly. Medium carbonation and body. Not to be drunk with food... it's not a dessert beer, it's a dessert. Would buy again for the flavor, excited to try the other Southern Tier dessert beers.

A- Tall 12oz bottle pours a motor oil black brew into my snifter atop which a thick, foamy nutty tan head forms. The cap reaches about a centimeter high with pretty good retention. A few small sheets of lace stick on the glass with sparse spots.
S- Dessert in a glass. The aroma hints at heavy sweetness, vanilla and... caramel. Not your usual toasty barley caramel but the kind that you usually find on a good dessert menu is captured in this smell. The roasted grains back it up with dark chocolate, burnt barley and coffee notes. Mostly about the caramel but creme brulee actually comes to mind as well as that classic Souther Tier lactose hint.
T- Caramel still runs the show with a massive cloying sweetness right alongside it but the roast makes more of an impact here with some burnt bitterness showing in the finish. Bitter dark chcocolate, salted sweets, vanilla bean sweets, dark roast burnt coffee beans, buttery milk sugars (like a Cow Tail candy), charred barley and boozy notes.
MF- A rich, thick body with a decadent silkiness that results from the very creamy and chewy consistency. Carbonation is padded by this texture and despite its fairly high level it comes down very smoothly. The finish brings some heat from the alcohol.
One of the better big beers by Southern Tier since the release of the Blackwater classics and blends. This brew utilizes the classic milk sugar and roasty base but boosts the caramel alongside some salt for a unique beer in its own right. Not for everyone and extremely sweet but the name should warn anyone of that.

Poured very little head which faded just as quick. A very dark color. Smells amazing. Very caramelly. Tastes very sweet (if you don't want something sweet don't bother). Caramel and saltiness are balanced nicely. Still has a little boozy kick to it at 10%. Has some roasty notes to it as well. Was very light for an imperial stout. Smooth as well, not being too carbonated. Overall was a little too sweet for what I wanted but still very good overall. I'd say the smell is better than the taste but still great taste.

A: Pours a jet black color with almost no head. Brief head is khaki in color and fades quickly.
S: Mostly strong aromas of salted caramel with lighter notes of chocolate, vanilla, and sweet and toasted malts.
T: Taste is caramel off the bat followed by chocolate, vanilla, milk, and coffee with very mild hoppy bitterness. Ends with slight caramely saltiness. Sweet, but well balanced and not overly sweet.
F: Medium bodied, smooth, and creamy with light carbonation.
O: Overall, this is an awesome dessert imperial stout. The salted caramel flavors are balanced well with the malt and hop notes. Would definitely try this one again.

I've had a ton of great beers since being turned onto craft brews quite a while back now. Love many styles but am a tried and true Stout guy. And this one is off the hook! The appearance and mouthfeel screams classic Stout. Mildly carbonated and beautiful black. Had from a bottle and hard poured it. A bit of head remained after a few minutes, laced a bit. The smell is definitely chocolate and caramel. Yes, all that matters to me some, but my bottom line on any beer is the taste. And my oh my! My taste buds, anyhow, get the chocolate, caramel, and vanilla right off the bat, then it finishes up, to me anyway, like a classic Imperial Stout. Unbelievable flavour! Very smooth as well. Stout fans, it's a must try. On the fence about Stouts? Well, try this one and you'll be sold.
