Very Good
Imperial Cherry GoseImperial Cherry Gose
Notes: The finished beer is a striking, lustful shade of red with a persistent white head and durable lacing thanks to the large portion of wheat in the grist. The nose is defined by equal parts bright lactic acidity and cherry notes with a hint of coriander. On the palate, the strong lactic acidity is accentuated by the natural tartness of the cherry juice. Quantitatively, this beer is quite sweet, but we find that this level of residual sweetness is just enough to balance the acidity and that the overall perception of the beer is actually quite dry. The beer finishes very clean and in conjunction with the salt in the finish, it definitely makes you want to come back for more.

Pours clear red. Bubbly, short, wide head that Fades fast.

Smells tart cherry, Salt hints and hints of sweetness.

Taste like tart cherry, almost an Oaky/wine taste, hints of sweetness. Pretty flavorless overall. Dry finish with a Cherry linger. Lighter medium body and fizzy medium carbonation.

Appearance - Pours muddled orange brown color with thin white head that quickly dissipates.

Aroma - Lots of tart cherry juice for sure, little lemon and a hint of salt.

Taste - Tart cherry for sure, deep sour flavor but not puckering, not alot of salt maybe a little on the end.

Feel - Light side of medium tart and dry finish.

Overall - Not a big fan of the flavor, it is sour to me in an unplesent way.

The only other Gose I've tried tasted like sweat. Thus, I was reluctant to try this one. I was pleasantly surprised.

The flavor is tart and I don't detect the saltiness that supposedly is characteristic of Goses. To me, it tastes like a regular Sour. Which is fine with me.

It looks kind of like cherry soda, with a nice, sharp tart fragrance. Actually, I should say it looks more like cherry juice, as there is little to no bubbling from carbonation, and no head or lacing. Still, there is adequate carbonation in the mouthfeel.

I like it! I'll get it again!

Light peach-pink color and nearly transparent. Complete lack of head. Faint cherry and wood aroma. Flavor is pretty bland. Just a touch of cherry sweet tarts. Minimal acid. Even fainter wood character. No hops or funk to speak of. Sturdy medium body bordering on syrup. Sticky texture. Low carbonation. Not what I expected.

I think this style you either you like or just pucker up and grin and bear it. I did like it for the style.... Tart, tangy and full of cherry flavor..

Pours a pinkish red color with a small white head, that dissipates real quick. Plenty of carbonation. Smell is of sour cherry. Taste is a light sour tart with a cherry aftertaste. Mouthfeel is light for the abv. Overall love the brewery and style.

i wanted to like this way more than i did. for one, i think its way too sweet, there just isnt enough body or sourness, despite the strength, to make that much fruity sugar work. secondly, it benefits absolutely zero from being as strong as it is. this is a style i really want to drink on, and this limits drinkability even though you cant taste or feel the alcohol as you drink it. it just seems a little forced, quite outside what i know to be the southern tier wheelhouse, and overall rather underwhelming. its pink and clear but also almost still. it smells sweet and tart like cherry candy, and never gives an honest cherry flavor when i taste it, its candy all the way, not quite artificial, but a lot sweeter than the fruit ever is by itself. if it had more carbonation to move it along, it would be a way better beer, but its stillness i interpret as a flaw. still somewhat light in feel though, not much grain happening here, and while the sourness is there, there really isnt a lot of flavor from it. mediocre to me, not the type of fruited gose i prefer to drink...

12 oz. Bottle

Poured into a tulip a pretty nice clean/clear pinkish/red color, very nice carbonation, with a pretty quick small off-white head, which leaves minimal sticky lacing behind. The nose is malty, yeasty, with some nice cherry notes, slight coriander, slightly tart. The taste is malty, yeasty, pretty nice cherry note, slight coriander, nice tart/sourness going on, also some little sweetness. Medium body, ABV hidden pretty well with this one, nice little dry/bitter finish. Overall, a nice little brew.

Though imperialized, this was still poured into a pokal. The appearance was a pink color with a decent transparency about it. Carbonation could be seen rising at a moderate pace. Head quickly dissipated leaving no lacing. The smell starts off with some tart cherry up front with some mild lemon rind bitterness. Low saltiness. The flavor takes the tartness from the cherries and combines with the lemon and sour-ed wheat. Low saltiness. Decent acidity level in the aftertaste and finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body. Carbonation isn’t really felt too much. Acidity hits my tongue with the appropriate amount of sour-ed wheat. Overall, it’s good for the most part, pretty sure I could come back to.

On-tap 4/9/2017 at Natty Greene’s Tavern in North Attleboro, MA, served in a snifter glass.

A: The beer is a bright ruby red color, with a short pinkish white head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains cherries, light malts and wheat.

T: The taste starts out with a strong tart cherry flavor. Then something breadiness comes in from wheat and a light malt character. There’s a typical Gose-like tanginess and a decent balance. The after-taste is tart.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, light-to-medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry and clean.

O: A little tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this is a decent beer to drink for a while.

Bottled in September 2016. Pours clear, cherry red in color with minimal head. Taste is big sour cherries and a good deal of salt with light sour mix. Tart, sour, good salt presence at the end, light bodied, low carbonation...Really tasty..I like Southern Tier and am pleasantly surprised by this one. Stands up really well and the salt is full force..coats the tongue nicely without being too overpowering.Sour flavor is spot on and the cherry is not overpowering. The cherry taste one reminds me of some of the good Belgian sour ales that first got me into Belgian beers..I need to pick up more Southern Tier beers.

Light cherry red in color with excellent clarity. Poured with a short, bright white, fizzy foam with low retention. Medium light wheat malt aroma light bread crust notes and a hint of fresh cherries. Medium bodied with medium carbonation and a light creaminess through the middle. Pleasant, controlled, boozy warmth from the middle to the end. Medium wheat malt flavor up front that slowly fades to tart cherry. Pleasant, mouth-watering tartness intensifies until it peaks through the middle. grows through the middle. A light bready note in the middle is followed by tapering tartness and saltiness to the end. Finished semi-dryly with a salty bite followed by bready, wheat malt and light cherry tartness. Carbonation was a little on the light side. However, this was crisp, dry and refreshing despite the higher abv. Tasty and tart.

Two of my favorite things a sour ale and a beer brewed with cherry juice. Looks about as bright red as it can be with just a 1/4 inch of froth that settles down to a very mild ring. Smell is awesome sour gose cherry juice and bitter skins. Not as sour as I expected and also tart and bitter mostly from the gose base I assume. Malty base is kind of bready and strong keeping the ABV in check. Very smooth and bubby almost like a light beer.

Overall for $2.50 a pop it's OK but nothing I want to run out and get again. If only it had more sweet cherry flavor this would be stellar.

First had poured from 1/2-growler into tumbler. Beautiful beer somewhat lacking in qualities of classic Gose, with added cherry also seeming to tend more toward flavor of skin than juice.

I picked up a bottle of Southern Tier's Cherry Gose last week for $3.69 at The Lager Mill. I haven't had the greatest luck with this brewery in the past, but I'm interested to see how this Imperial Cherry Gose will turn out, so lets see how it goes. 2016 Vintage. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a teku.

A- The label looks nice, it's got a nice design and it's just a little eye catching. It poured a red color that took on a little bit of orange hue when held to the light and it had a fingers worth of fizzy white and slight pink head that quickly faded away and it didn't leave much lacing behind. This is a nice looking beer, but I wish the head retention and lacing were better.

S- The aroma starts off with a lower amount of high sweetness with the cherry juice being the first to show up and it impart a nice and natural cherry juice like aroma that;s followed by a noticeable sour and salty aroma from the gose base. Towards the end comes the malts which impart a grainy, pale malt, doughy and white bread like aromas. This beer has a pretty nice aroma, all the aspects that I was expecting show up.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma, but it's a little lighter and it starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with the cherry juice being the first to show up and when combined with a little alcohol flavor it's very similar to a cherry wine flavor with less cherry juice flavors showing up and more of a fermented cherry flavors coming through. Up next comes lower amount of high sourness with just a little bit of a salty flavors coming through and it's followed by the malts which are a little lighter than they were in the aroma, but they impart all the same aspects. On the finish it's a little watery tasting with a little lingering sourness and it had a cherry and slightly malty aftertaste. This is a nice tasting beer, but the flavors just don't seem to blend together as well as they could have.

M- A little smooth, a little mouth puckering, not to crisp, medium bodied with a lower amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is nice, but I wish it was smoother.

Overall I thought this was a decent beer and a decent example of the style, but it was a little rough around the edges and there's a few aspects that could use a little bit of work. This beer didn't have the best drinkability, half a glass is the perfect amount for me, anymore than that and it might start to wear on me. What I like the most about this beer is the aroma, it's pretty nice and it's the highlight of this beer. What I like the least about this beer is the taste and drinkability, they could both use a little work and I wish the flavors blended together better. I don't think I would buy this beer, but I wouldn't turn down a small glass and I would recommend it to anyone who wanted a sour beer with some noticeable fermented cherry flavors. All in all i'm on the fence about this beer and I think it could use a little cleaning up since it's rough around the edges. It's not a favorite Southern Tier beer and it's a decent example of the style. This one wasn't bad, but it could still use some work. better luck next time guys.

Leaning towards an imperial version of a Berliner Weiss. Slightly sweet. Tartness is right on point. No salt, not even in the finish as suggested. Decent beer nonetheless!

Pours a grapefruit color with a thin film of fizz rising to the top, but that's it. No lacing left behind. Aroma is tart cherry, grapefruit, and lemon. Cherry carries the flavor profile with additional notes of lemon and grapefruit. It's tart, and sour, but pleasant. Mouth feel is fizzy, with a medium-thin consistency. Overall, a tasty, tart gose. Cherries are nice, although grapefruit notes are hefty as well.

Served in a 12oz snifter.

Pours light pink with none of the commercially described head nor lacing. A distinctly vinous note could fool me into believing this is a cheap champagne Flavor is certainly tart with a slightly discernible cherry bent. Very carbonated mouthfeel is distracting. Definitely feel the dry and salty finish. Glad I only got a single. This brewery is so hit-or-miss for me.

Pours a slightly hazy rose colored amber producing barely a finger of mineral water effervescent, shortlived, foamy, white head that leaves little lacing. This is in direct opposition to the head & lacing comments on Southern Tier's website. My bottle is dated 06/27/16 so perhaps the age is playing a role.?. Aroma is tart cherry with a doughy malt note making it faintly cherry pie like. I detect pilsner malts & wheat. There are also hints of grain, mineral, candy apple & coriander in a briney background. Taste opens with intense lactic acid sourness, tart cherry & mineral with brine developing at mid-sip & intensifying into the finish. These flavors largely persist & subdue the notes of malt, wheat, lemon & lime to mere hints in a peppery, crisp, dry finish. Aftertaste is salty cherry, mineral lemon, lime & tart green apple. While I can detect the coriander in the nose I cannot do so in the mouth. The alcohol is well hidden in both the mouth & nose. Mouthfeel is light bodied with moderate-higg carbonation that rapidly dissipates as the brew warms, prickly & dry.

Pours an effervescent blush with a pinky of beige colored head, falls off rapidly. Minimal head retention & zero lacing

S: Tart cherry

T: Cherry juice, tartness, a little lemon up front. More of the same as this warms a little dryness & saltyness as well as this warms. Finishes dry, tart with & cherry & lemon sweet tarts

MF: Light body, lively carbonation, warming

Drinks easy, but nothing too exciting here. ABV is very well hidden

L: Clear pink with a foamy, off white head that quickly dissipates.

S: Extremely salty with tons of coriander. The cherry is there, but buried beneath the coriander and salt. Sort of a cough syrup, candy cherry.

T: Sweet and tart cherry blends with the powerful coriander, salt, and some alcohol warmth. This is only lightly tart for a gose, but sourness of the cherry does help balance out the coriander and salt.

F: Medium-light body, plentiful carbonation, but seems more spritzy and zippy than smooth and silky.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 9/8/2016. Pours slightly hazy reddish orange color with a 1-2 finger dense light pink head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tart/sour cherry, cherry skin, lemon, orange, green apple, sea salt, light coriander, wheat, biscuit, and light lacto funk. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/acidic yeast, cherry juice, salt/coriander, and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart/sour cherry, cherry skin, lemon, orange, green apple, sea salt, light coriander, wheat, biscuit, and light lacto funk. Good amount of fruity/acidic sourness on the finish; with lingering notes of tart/sour cherry, cherry skin, lemon, orange, green apple, sea salt, wheat, biscuit, and light lacto funk on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, cherry juice, salt/coriander, and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/sourness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from acidity as well. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately acidic/grainy/bready, and fairly saline balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a great fruited Gose style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, cherry juice, salt/coriander, and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the balanced malt/sourness. A very enjoyable offering.

A: Almost no head just a quick white fizz. Body is a nice watery red color with great clarity.

S: Cherry right off the cuff, light wheat and a crushed vitamin smell

T: Lots of nice cherry, slight wheat, a nice salt backbone not overwhelming but it is there. A light bit of tartness.

M: Fairly light but a little syrupy too which is odd for a Gose.

O:Not a bad beer, nothing special either. Alcohol is well hidden. The cherry is very present.
