Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
After over a year of prototyping R&D batches of Nu Skool IPA, this final version is one special beer. It’s an approachable, well-balanced IPA with slight malty sweetness that’s brimming with tropical, fruity, spicy, piney & citrus character. To contrast our IPA (brewed since 2002), which most closely resembles a traditional English IPA in malt & hop bills, we wanted to brew an IPA in a new way. Like craft brewers, hop farmers have come a long way. This beer showcases just how far we’ve come with alluring aromas & explosive flavors using only new American & experimental hops. There’s no need to add anything else. It’s time to graduate to the next level of hop flavors with Nu Skool IPA.

HOP PROCESS: We used 3.5 lbs. of “new school” varieties of hops per barrel of beer. We load our hopback to the brim with Mosaic hops for a big tropical fruit character. A nice whirlpool dose of experimental hop #07270 gives the beer a flavorful, resinous character. We then dry hop this beer on two separate days with a large amount of Mosaic hops in our hop cannon & Simcoe + Equinox two days later.

A: [3.75] The can lists the ABV (6.0%) and there is a clear canned date on the bottom (02/08/2017). The beer is a amber color and has 1 finger of rich white head.

S: [3.50] Dank, pineapple, pine, slight mango and lemow rind.

T: [3.75] Biscuity and crackers, lime rind, orange, pineapple.

M: [4.00] Zippy carbonation and medium body. Low bitterness and bite.

O: [3.75] This is a decent beer - not like discovering the New World but still serviceable. There are definitely hints of citrus in the nose and flavor. These are delivered without the punch of bitterness that sometimes is forced into IPAs.

Nevermind the foo-foo wineglass reviews. This is a good IPA. Starts with an excellent hoppy aroma that that is both piney and tropical. Into the glass. I really like the translucent golden color - it looks very refreshing medium head and lacing. The taste is very good - highlights just what they say on the label. I do agree with the spice / rye and find it very interesting. Great overall example that goes well on these 93f degree days! Good stuff....will buy again.

A: The beer is slightly hazy light yellow in color and has a light to moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high bright white head that died down, but left a short head covering the surface and lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate to strong aromas of citrusy and tropical fruit hops are present in the nose—lemons and pineapples seem to stand out in particular.
T: The taste follows the smell, except that there are also some hints of pine resin hops and there is a moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels a bit shy of being medium-bodied and is crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I really enjoyed this IPA; the smell and taste of the mixture of hops was very interesting. The lighter body nature also made it quite easy to drink.

A nice bitter and fruity beer that pours a pale gold with a white pillowy head. Nice bands of lacing stay behind on the glass. Notes of pineapple, mango and and pine show up in the nose accompanied by some nice malty sweetness. The taste is sweet up front with a biting bitterness to balance it out. A bit of pine and yeastiness are in the taste as well.

$10.99 per six pack at a Whole Paycheck in Brooklyn.

Does a poor job at trying to showcase Mosaic hops, failing to evoke any blueberry flavour whatsoever. I get floral hop character, pale malts, and grapefruit. Very simple and straightforward, with average depth of flavour at best and little of interest in terms of hop flavour. To its credit, it isn't overly malty or anything and there are no off-flavours, but for a beer billed as a new school Mosaic hopped IPA it's pretty disappointing.

I'm impressed Southern Tier can brew this beer consistently on the scale they do, but it's just not remarkable work given the current landscape of this oversaturated style. To stand out with an IPA, you've got to bring a hell of a lot more to the table than this. Drinkable enjoyable work, but with Lagunitas' IPAs available at a better price even as out-of-state imports in the New York market - not to mention local brews that cater to fans of the unfiltered IPA novelty - this doesn't stand a chance. Maybe it will succeed in states in Southern Tier's distribution footprint that don't have interesting IPAs being put out locally, but I can't recommend it to others over more widely available less expensive offerings in the style and there's nothing unique or special about it whatsoever.

Further impressions from another can:

Love the froth of the head. Body is clear and clean - obviously a filtered brew. For an IPA, it looks the part.

I'm not getting any Mosaic hops at all flavour-wise. Hop profile is fairly insipid, nodding towards vague fruit and generic floral flavours at best. Bitterness is reined in, but depth of flavour just isn't there and balance isn't dialed in to the extent one would expect in such a simplistic build.

05.06.2017: happened into another can when I picked up a Southern Tier variety 15 pack:

This remains subpar work, but the coating mouthfeel is decent. Mosaic hops are wasted on this ale, which makes no attempt to showcase the hop to any degree of expressiveness or vividness. Very straightforward mediocre fare, lacking even moderate complexity or subtlety of flavour.

Nevertheless, it's drinkable if a bit dry on the finish for an IPA. I'll blow through the 3 cans I got in my variety box, but it's very forgettable for a Mosaic-hopped purportedly experimental IPA.

12 oz. can dated 01/17/2017

Pours clear gold with a frothy white foam head. Smells like pineapple, mango, papaya, lychee, guava, passionfruit, grapefruit peel, orange citrus, caramelized honey malt, with dank earthy herbal grassy resinous pine. Tastes like pineapple, mango, papaya, lychee, guava, passionfruit, grapefruit peel, orange citrus, caramelized honey malts, with dank earthy herbal grassy resinous pine. Feels medium-light bodied, creamy with moderate low carbonation. Overall a nice IPA.

A: crystal clear; medium gold in color; 1+ finger finely poured ivory head that receded to a very thin cap; very nice lacing;

S: Fruity, you can definitely smell pine/hops as well. Fruit and berries solid on the nose.

T: Light, juicy front with a medium hop bite at the end. Some toasted hops mixed in. As the beer warms the luscious fruit flavors disappear and the hops becomes more prominent at the front.

M: Very nice, medium body. Right about where it should be. Bitterness at the end finishes smoothly. No lingering alcohol.

O: A very good, well-balanced IPA, worth $9 for 6. Would recommend finishing in 15 minutes or less, but overall would definitely buy again.

This is honestly one of the best beers available in my area now. We have had Southern Tier for years, and I've liked most everything they offer, but this is special. We have acquired a lot of new offerings in my state, and this may be the most tropical hop-bomb available. Big, juicy pineapple, orange, and mango. So much so, I wondered if it was actually a fruit-infused beer. This is one I can wave in front of my wife's face, and she actually thinks it smells good. I'm not sure how it only has an 89 out of 100 as of this review, but it's absolutely delicious, and the fact that it's widely available and not overly expensive make it something I'll be drinking by choice as long as it's available where I'm at.

Pours a clear light to medium golden with a half finger bone white head atop that settles pretty quickly.Sharp grapefruit and big tropical fruits in the nose,a little underlying caramel malt in there as well.Ruby red grapefruit ,tangerine, and mango flavors really come out with not much bitterness to be had, again light caramel/biscuit malt underneath. This is a full on tropical fruit hop flavored IPA,again no bitterness to be found, like hop fruit juice.Great stuff.

12 oz can, 06-23-17 stamped on the bottom

Pours typical near clear amber, off white cap leaves typical low lacing

Resiny and tropical nose

Decent IPA, more resins and more pineapple...decent IPA in a world of a zillion IPA....worth a try, but nothing overly special

Pours clear, gold in color, with 1/3 inch head. Taste is grapefruit rind, herbal hops, biscuit, with faint mango and pineapple on the finish. I think the problem I have with this beer is that the beer gets so sharply bitter and dry at the end that I cannot really enjoy the finish. Body is medium-light, bitter with lingering dry bitterness, moderate carbonation. I love what Southern Tier does with most of their beers, but this one just did not come together for me.

12 oz can in SC.
Clear amber body with a large white head. The head is durable and leaves plenty of sticky lacing. Fine-grained visible carbonation.

Aroma: pungent piney and tropical fruit with hints of grass, herbs and citrus peel.

Flavor: a touch less hoppy than the aroma suggests. Hints of citrus and other tropical fruits. Moderate bitterness for style.

Feel: medium-light body with lively, medium carbonation. Semi-dry finish.

Awesome tropical aroma with pineapple standing out most. Taste is similar. Crisp, light body - probably because it's a slightly lower ABV than your average IPA. Would love a DIPA with this hop profile.
