Thick Mint Imperial Stout (Blackwater Series)Thick Mint Imperial Stout (Blackwater Series)
Notes: Inspired by the legendary Girl Scout cookie, Thick Mint joins our world-class rated Blackwater Series of dessert beers alongside Creme Brûlée, Choklat Oranj, Salted Caramel & Choklat in 2017. This imperial stout is a mouthful of perfectly balanced mint & chocolate. Roasty malts coalesce with notes of Belgian dark chocolate, sweet mint & just a touch of sweet caramel. So decadently delicious, you’ll wish you’d bought another box... er, bottle.

12oz bottle. 11/14/17 bottle date. Appearance: Black, opaque, with low lying dark khaki head that dissipates. Aroma: Creamed coffee, dark chocolate, and a touch of sweet mint. Taste: Rich malt sweetness, cocoa, molasses, and light roast that quickly transitions toa sweet mintthat leaves a cooling sensation on the tongue. Light perceived bitterness. Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a low carbonation. Finish: Cool mint sensation lingers over a light roasted maltiness and cocoa Overall: A true dessert beer that is intensely rich and sweet with a decadent chocolate and roast countered by a sweet mint that leaves a cool sensation on the tongue. A unique beer for sure, but a bit of a challenge to finish because of the rich complexity

A - Pitch black pour with a thick, creamy burnt toffee colored head.

S - Dominant mint, creme, and chocolate on the nose.

T - Chocolate, mint, creme, and some alcohol presence as the beer warms.

M - Finish is slightly chalky, a little bit of stickiness on the lips

O - One of the better mint stouts that I've had. Worth a try.

Poured black and thick. Perfect mouthfeel for a stout like this. Very dark, and smells of the chocolate and mint come through. The flavor is the catch though. Definitely very distinct Mint and chocolate comes through. This is flavorful and excellent. Most would consider it a desert beer. Me, I could drink it about any time.

Glass full of Andes mints or I guess thin mints if you prefer. The aroma is tons of chocolate and mint. The taste is tons of chocolate and mint. It isn't as sweet as the nose would lead you to believe but it is sweet. The finish is surprisingly bitter though it is more like bitter dark chocolate and less like hops. Interesting and delicious dessert beer.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into snifter glass (as recommended on the bottle) in December 2017. There was a bottled-on date of 3/3/2017 on the bottle. I drank this within 1 month of purchase.

Appearance: Very dark black with a thick tan/brown head. Head is creamy and remains thick for a while. It leaves a little lacing on the glass.

Smell: Strong aroma of mint and chocolate and caramel. There is not much hop aroma.

Taste: There is an interesting combination of flavors. There is strong mint and chocolate flavors with some smoky roasted malt flavors, and a little vanilla and caramel flavor. There is little bitterness from hops, but the flavor is dominated by the mint and chocolate flavors. There is a strong alcohol presence as with other Imperial Stouts.

Mouth-feel: Thick, but with a heavy and extremely smooth and creamy body.

This is a very good dessert style Imperial Stout, and it has a variety of flavors that adds a nice complexity to the beer. It is very smooth and enjoyable to drink. I would buy this again.

Poured 12oz bottle into small snifter. It is black with a 1 finger light tan head. Fades slowly and leaves behind a good amount lacing on my glass. Pleasant aroma that is creme de mint with cocoa and milk chocolate. Flavor resembles a peppermint york patty more than a thin mint cookie. It is very enjoyable with a bit more mint that chocolate that doesn't become too sweet. Mouthfeel is medium with a smooth carbonated finish. It is definitely enjoyable if you like mint and chocolate.

Black water, indeed!

Right out of the bottle this thing pours what I now believe is the blackest and most light absorbing colored liquid I have ever put my eyes upon. What stops this short from being world class is the lack of foam and lacing. Otherwise, this is a beer to behold in person. The smell is everything it touts to be - chocolaty, minty, a touch of booze, all of which perfectly translates to the taste making it the best dessert beer I've ever had. Its mouthfeel is creamy and almost velvety, with only a touch of carbonation and a tingle of heat from the 10% ABV, another wonderful experience. Overall, this was more than exceptional to me, it was absolutely outstanding...I need to find another one so I can age for a year and see what I find at the end of that waiting period.

L - Pitch black with ruby red edges and less than a finger of light brown head

S - Well, yeah, chocolate and mint with minor alcohol

T - Well, yeah, chocolate and mint. Liquid Andes candies. No real Imperial Stout characteristics and is simplistic.

F - Thick enough. No alcohol. Finishes kind of clean with no cloying aftertaste.

O - One-dimensional, but it delivered what it promised.

As advertised. Did I expect anything different? No. Smells and tastes exactly Girl Scout Thin Mints. Who doesn't like the iconic cookie? Did I like this? Yes but like any novelty beer never need to have again. If anything, I'd suggest dialing the mint back a little bit. Serving size 12 oz $2 I would also suggest not paying the $10 I've seen the bomber list for.
