Small backstory on this one. I remember seeing this on Southern Tier's "list of offerings" and was always looking forward to it coming out. But alas, I was not in the beer scene before this was retired. One a drive to my parent's house a month ago, I come across this bottle in a gas station(a little more high scale gas station mind you...seriously, what gas station would ever carry bombers of Southern Tier) of all places. End of the day I left it at my parent's house because I forgot to bring it back. Fast forward another month and a half before I make it back down, and my dad and I crack the bottle. This time I actually look at the bottle, because I still haven't seen it in my neck of the woods. Bottle date: 3-26-12. Opened 4-22-16. This has been aging for 4 years.

And it still drank great!!!!!!!

Pours almost pitch black. First smells bring waves of roasty sweetness. The taste follows suit. This drinks more on the sweet side for a coffee stout. It could be the age, but I detected a slight raisiny aspect to the brew as well. The mouthfeel was excellent. The beer coats your mouth and the taste refuses to go away. Last of all, the alcohol is not just well hidden, it is non-existent.

Needless to say, I will be stopping by this gas station on the way home, and can only pray they still have some left, cause I'm going to buy them all.

Black pour, barely there brown head that was tan. Aroma was not coffee for the most part. Disappointing even if not 'wrong' or 'off'.

Taste also didn't drop the coffee like its hot. Chewy, massive malt combo hid the alcohol, but also hid the coffee. Southern Tier bombers are so hit or miss, this was one of the few that is really in the middle.

Review from 4/6/12-10.6% ABV; pours pitch black, a slow sipper that was very robust and full of tasty coffee flavor; rich, complex and flavorful, any coffee drinker will love this beer. Smelled as good as it tasted and went down easier than it should have with the high ABV.

Oct. 2015 note: I enjoyed splitting this bomber both times I had this brew years ago, but I needed to review it on my own and missed the opportunity as they stopped making it…too bad, I thought it was excellent.

Here in our kettles, these three special ingredients are blended to create a heady mixture of sweet sugar, dark roast, and complex flavor." Brewed in the style of an American Imperial Stout with coffee. Formerly available in 22 oz. bottles and on limited draft, retired by 2013.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a snifter glass. Served above 57 degrees Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a thin, sudsy head of a medium mocha brown color over a very dark brown, near black body. Retention is average and lacing is light and spotty. 3.5

(Smell) Faded coffee beans with moderate acidity, medium roast, a pinch of caramel breads and grain malts with a medium pinch of alcohol. Potency is moderate. 3.25

(Taste) Moderate roasted malt up front, light lactose, chocolate bread and faint coffee beans. Moderate grain alcohol profile present and fruit-like acidity, some mild oxidation present. A bit better composed than the aroma suggests, but still very lacking and poorly dated, not a great aging candidate. 3.25

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, moderately syrupy, lightly sticky, creamy and modestly dry. Carbonation is mild, generating a moderate frothiness and a lightly crisp finish. Body is medium for the style and shy of heavy overall. Balance is slightly acidic and grainy over sweet. Alcohol presence is moderate and there are no significant off characters in this beer. 3.5

(Overall) Likely a phenomenal coffee stout shortly upon release, Jahva may be the only Blackwater series stout release in the series that has not aged as gracefully as the other bottle releases. The coffee impact is largely faded and broken down, generating strong acidity and tannins that draw a lot of attention to the graininess and alcohol in this beer. This beer hasn't been brewed in several years to date, but I hope to get the opportunity to revisit this ale if Southern Tier deems it worthy of a revival. In the meantime, I do not recommend even carefully aged bottles of this stout, as it does not fare well with time. 3.5

Not retired....! I found this beer on accident today actually. Recommended by guy at liqour store and I tried it.

Very dark in color, like cant see thru dark.

Thin to medium head that dissipates quickly.

Strong hints of roasted coffee beans and a slight bitter hoppy finish.

Overall a good buzz and drink.

Part of a flight which included So. Tier Creme Brulee, Java Head, Imperial OAT & Founders Brkfst Stout.

This had nice strong coffee flavors. I'm not getting the chocolate or vanilla others seem to have noted, but no points off. A good solid assertive brew.

Aged for nearly 2 years, poured from their now retired bomber...

Appearance - Had sediment in this aged bottle, I incorporated this back into the beer and let it rest for a bit. Poured nearly 2 fingers of medium tan colored head, body is a completely opaque dark chocolate brown, a strong light will reveal a few deep maroon brown edges,

Smell - Rich soy sauce, molasses, liquid smoke, roasted malts, warm dark chocolate, rich dark roasted coffee

Taste - Very much like the nose, I get strong flavors of soy sauce, barely sweetened molasses, rich roasted malts with some liquid smoke, semi-sweet dark chocolate, also some dark fruits in the back, a very light sourness like plum skin, and then deep into the finish I get a small amount of very rich and full bodied black coffee.

Mouthfeel - Almost full, very smooth and nearly creamy, carb is very low and what is there feels very soft and smooth with an occasional edge way on the back of the tongue. The end result is that this is a sipper, and requires a good pause between sips - the flavors are so bold here that with out any cleanse/scrub from the carb you need to let the flavors finish after each sip - don't think I could chug this if I tried,

Overall - I'm enjoying this beer immensely, but I personally don't find this stout especially coffee forward. The coffee is there, but only asserts long after the sip. Not a complaint, as I love all of the other flavors, and they are very big and bold - crushing the coffee nuances until long into the finish. With that said, if I had to choose a member of the Blackwater Series to discontinue, I'd pick this one. NOT because it is a bad beer, it is excellent, extremely bold in flavor and complexity, but does not warrant the name Jahva. If you want a couple of great representatives of the Blackwater Series, look no further than Oat and Choklat. If you come across this one, you will not be disappointed, you just may not quite get the name, as I do/don't ;o)

Wow, had no idea this was retired. Been sitting in my cellar for a while, waiting for me to get around to it. Now that winter has snuck back, figured it might be time. Quite a few years old, but not date.

Pours a darker colored fizzy slight creamy smaller head covering that fades fairly quickly, typical for this high abv, bits of lacing, and long legs, just about pitch blck beer with hints if light barely sneaking through the thin parts.

Nose brings some fudgey chocolate at first, mild cocoa dust, into roast, some roasted malts and roasted coffee beans, some espresso like coffee notes but not a lot, I think most of it has faded over time, but so has the booze and sweetness I think so far. Some syrupy notes, like a coffee syrup, bit toasty, with some mild aged aromas with aged malt softness but also a hint of oxidation in there, touch of burnt brown sugar covered raisins as well, and some stale coffee.

Taste starts with sweet syrupy malts, but also that aged soft malt effect on top of it. Nice creamy feel with more cocoa, little fudgey chocolate on top, into coffee, coffee syrup at first, into stale brewed coffee, little espresso note, and some roasted coffee beans. Then more malts, a little roast and toasted malt notes, little caramel and some burnt brown sugar, hints of raisiny notes too, and more of that aged notes little oxidation and stale flavors, but also soft malt characters, nice attenuated booze that is barely warming, sweetness is died down a bit too. A hint of a bready cake like note too, with the caramel, espresso, and syrupy notes it almost has a little tiramissu like character. Finish is a bit sticky syrupy but not as much as I expected, bit of warming booze, more cocoa fudgey notes, coffee syrup, shaved baker's chocolate actually, little sweet syrupy flavors too.

Mouth is fulled bod, bit syrupy and chewy like, lighter carb, mild warming booze.

Overall not bad, not what it once was as the age took a beating to it, but both good and bad. Good is that the booze is much less as well as the sweetness, and a bit of that aged malt feel. However bad is that it has a touch of oxidation, and the coffee is much less than it used to be. Still a nice beer, very big beer, not one you drink quickly on an afternoon lounge, this is a slow sipper for sure.

Bomber > Mason Pint

A - Pitch black with half a finger of fizzy tan head, a little spotty lacing.
S - Weak coffee in the aroma, maybe it just didnt take well to the aging, vanilla, dark chocolate, very sweet caramel and toffee malts.
T - Super sweet stout, this is like an imperial milk stout with more of a hinting at coffee, lots of toffee flavor in this, vanilla, milk chocolate, definitely alcohol too.
M - Cloyingly sweet, viscous, silky.
O - Decent, but not what I remember it being like, I'm thinking it just didnt age well, but ohh well, thats the last I'll be having of this.

A: Pours an clear but opaque jet black in color with light to moderate amounts of gentle visible carbonation at the surface and some dark cola brown highlights. The beer has a half finger tall sudsy tan head that slowly reduces to a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of roasted coffee and dark chocolate over lighter aromas of roasted malts. The smell intensifies as the beer warms up.

T: Upfront there are light to moderate flavors of roasted malts with moderate to strong flavors of roasted malts and dark chocolate with a light amount of sweetness. Light amounts of alcohol in the finish as the beer warms up and hints of bitterness.

M: Medium to full bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of alcohol warming in the finish.

O: This beer is very enjoyable and it has an excellent flavor, especially for someone that truly enjoys coffee. The beer is strong and the alcohol is present so as the beer warms up it becomes a slower and slower sipper.

22oz bottle poured into a large snifter. Bottled on date is illegible, but I believe it to be 1-1.5 years old.

A: Deep brown in color, almost black. Clarity looks to be good. Even after an aggressive pour the head is short lived and fades into nothing fairly quickly. Minute spots of lacing.

S: Milk chocolate, earthy coffee, some vanilla and sugary sweetness. Dark caramel, brown sugar. Berry fruit. Even with the time under its belt some earthy, oily hops still come out on the nose.

T: Medium roast coffee right from the get-go. Time has made this mellow and smooth out beautifully, so that the deep, earthy coffee tastes intermingle with rich flavors of semi-sweet chocolate, dark caramel, and brown sugar. Slightly nutty. Very tame coffee acidity and just a slight hint of oily hops. Bitterness is fairly restrained, but the beer is not overly sweet either. Red berries deep within. Vanilla and some sugary sweetness creep in and begin to tip the balance toward the end. Finishes semi-dry with a slight sugary flavor, semi-sweet chocolate, faint coffee, and a very subtle kiss of smoke.

M: Big in body. Mouthfeel is thick and very creamy and smooth with a slight sludgy weight. Low carbonation.

O: Drinking this young would probably be ideal, but time didn't hurt it too much either. Just a little more coffee flavor and acidic bitterness might have helped balance it a little better. At times the sugary sweetness of it comes through just a hair too much. Nicely done though, it was still a treat to drink.

2012 bottle, served in snifter

A- pours dark black with just a bit of light creeping through, very small fizzy head dissapears almost immediately, leaving no head or lace, looks like coffee

S- lots of sweet & dark chocolaty malt; notes of chocolate ice cream, black licorice, toffee brittle, graham cracker, sweet cream and a big dose of coffee at the end. Very complex and inviting.

T- lots of dark chocolaty sweetness upfront, almost lactic sweetness. The coffe kicks in mid palate, but is not overpowering, a bit subtle. The sweetness continues from start to finish with more dark chocolate and black licorice near the end with some booze on the finish

M- heavy, syrupy body with low carbonation leads to a heavy foamy mouthfeel. Sweet finish with a big alcohol burn on the finish. Surprisingly still pretty boozy considering its over a year old

O- definitely the sweetest coffee stout I've tried. It's a big boozy sipper with nice chocolate and coffee notes. Hard to tackle the whole bottle alone

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 3/6/2012. Pours pitch black color with a small dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, cocoa, toast, light char, dark bread, caramel, toffee, floral, light vanilla, and roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roasted malt and coffee notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, milk chocolate, toast, light char, dark bread, caramel, toffee, floral, vanilla, and roasted earthiness. Light amount of coffee bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark/milk chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, toast, caramel, toffee, floral, dark bread, vanilla, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic balance and complexity of big chocolate/roasted malt and coffee flavors; with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very creamy, slick, and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent coffee stout!(even with the age). Great complexity and balance of roasted malt and coffee flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the gravity. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bomber into tulip (not seeing a date)

Appearance- jet black, half finger of off white head

Aroma- A lot of coffee, not just coffee but good coffee, roasted malt, some chocolate, there are some citrus kind of fruit like notes that i'm not sure are they coffee or from hops, it also a little earthy and floral. A little booze but very hidden for the abv. Complex

Flavor-Wallop of coffee, bitter up front, and slight sweetness, bright citrus notes, roasted malt, slight chocolate, a little booze still pretty well hidden though. Ends with a lingering bitterness.

Mouthfeel- full and smooth

Overall- Excellent imperial coffee stout, very complex and hides the abv well. I am not sure how old this bottle is, but I heard they aren't making this any more, and I hope thats not true because I could see myself returning to this again and again.

Unsure of bottling date, assuming around 2 years old.

A: Pours a very dark brown, not quite black. Mid-sized but dense and frothy light brown head. Head fades fast with nary a trace of lacing. Decent retention at least.

S: Mild coffee, quite earthy and roasty in general (char, primarily) . Fairly mild aroma.

T: There's the coffee. Not very strong or bitter but it's there. Quite sweet (like all blackwater beers). Sweet chocolate mixes in. Finishes more with a chocolate and char and then a mild coffee flavor. Very sweet from start to finish, never get that bitter, acrid roasted coffee flavor. It's more like coffee syrup added to a big sweet stout.

M: Heavy, thick, viscous and smooth. Nice.

O: Definitely the sweetest coffee beer I've ever had. I don't know if the coffee is normally this subdued or if it's the age on the bottle but the coffee is very mild regardless. Honestly it melds quite nicely instead of standing out like 90% of the coffee stouts out there. Your (dis)like of coffee will probably determine whether you like this beer or not. If you're looking for a coffee bomb you've found the wrong beer. It's still good, just not what you'd expect a beer named "jahva" to taste like. Having said that, it's a nice big sweet stout and the coffee does add a nice layer of complexity.

Snagged a last bottle from Beer Junction in West Seattle. Heard rumors that this and Mokah are going to be gone for good and wanted a taste before they've vanished completely.

A: Pours black as night, with a finger's worth of creamy espresso-colored head. Dissipates after half a minute, leaving behind thin, spotty lacing.

S: Dark, roasted notes of ground coffee and barley. Something about it almost smells burnt, but not unpleasantly so.

T: Follows the nose, accompanied by an unexpected sweetness that balances nicely with the bitter black coffee and roasted barley notes. Finishes nice and toasty with that sweetness following through. Dark chocolate notes appear as it warms - and I definitely suggest you give it the chance to warm.

M: On the full side of medium. Carbonation carries it through but I could have done with a little more.

O: This beer was going to be a win for me no matter what, as a lover of coffee and imperial stouts. Jahva presented with a complexity and sweetness that was a pleasant surprise and definitely distinguished itself from other coffee stouts I have sampled previously. If you love coffee and Southern Tier's Creme Brulee, this stout's for you.

a - pours black with a pinky or so of creamy, tan head. foam calms to a film pretty quickly. no lacing.

s - espresso, chocolate, faint cola.

t - massive dark chocolate flavor with espresso notes. faint dark fruits, faint cola. finishes bittersweet.

m - full bodied, adequate carbonation, finer co2 profile, faint alcohol warming.

o -solid beer and enjoyable, but if you're already familiar with coffee stouts, this likely won't be anything amazing. good enough to buy a bottle or two on a regular basis though.

22 oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip.

A: Pours a very dark brown color. The head is unimpressive, it's a one finger light khaki color with poor texturing and retention. However, there is a bit of lacing left on the glass.

S: The coffee seems to have faded a bit, but there's a nice amount of licorice, roasted barley, and roasted nuttiness left in general. It's not quite FBS, but it works damn well.

T: I notice a lot of initial sweetness - then again, what else would I expect from a Southern Tier stout? Licorice fades out to light coffee, before being supplanted by a roasted (but not charred) barley finish. There's also a light hint of booze on the aftertaste. Generally, it's very sweet, and it can't quite get away with it the way Choklat did.

M: This beer is a weird mix of clean and slick. It tries to come across as dry on the finish, but there's a bit too much lingering sweetness for that to happen. This comes off as hard work at times, due to the strong booziness.

O: I don't know how old this bottle was, but it just wasn't nearly as enjoyable as Choklat to me. Still an okay brew, but far too hard to drink. I've said it before today, but I need a fresh bottle, stat!

Served on-tap in a 13 oz stemmed goblet at Sunset Grill (Boston, MA).

A: Black with dark brown rimming cap of head which leaves no real lacing.

S: Great stout aroma with dark maltiness and assertive coffee component.

T: The flavor is so smooth and creamy with a great balance of sweetness and dense dark maltiness with raisin and creamy marshmallow with a strong burst of coffee that stays in the second row but still makes itself known. THere is little to no bitterness in this brew but it is not overly sweet by any means.

M: Superbly creamy mouthfeel with just the right balance of body and density so that it avoids syrupy while not being at all thin. Carbonation is also spot on. Amazingly easy to drink with minimal alcohol presence.

O: A really phenomenal beer that I like for its overall mellowness but super-drinkable package. I should buy this more often.

From notes taken on 9/9 at home:

A – Pours super dark as expected, but not thick. No head, just a little lacing on top.

S – Really lacking on the coffee. All I really get is dark malt and alcohol. Lots of alcohol on the nose which is usually a bad thing for me.

T – Whoa at the alcohol! I was expecting it after the nose but jeez. Coffee is very faint, maybe some chocolate notes but they are wiped clean off of the palate by the alcohol.

M – Body is way too light. Carbonation is crisp but the whole mouthfeel is a burning alcohol sensation.

O – Not impressed. As of lover of big & dark beers I was very disappointed. The coffee influence just wasn’t there for me. I’m hoping that I just happened to get a young bottle. I am going to buy another to cellar up for a while and revisit this review. After having the Crème Brulee Stout from the same series I was really looking forward to this one. Way too boozy for my likes!

Pours pitch black with a very small brown head that dissipates quickly. No much lacing to speak of. Just a thin rim around the top of the beer. Looks like oil.
Nice coffee smell (didn't expect that, did you?) a bit of rich cocoa as well. Tastes a bit like alcoholic black coffee. Coffee is definitely at the forefront. A bit of chocolate too, roasted malts, etc. Fairly sweet, but bitter as well. Good balance there. Thick body, low carbonation, and a bit of an alcohol presence.

A really good coffee stout, that could maybe use some more carbonation and mask the alcohol better. Maybe a tad less sweetness as well? Not every beer can be perfect though, and this one is certainly not bad. Actually, it's great. Another good one from ST's blackwater series.

Black with a 1/4" brown head that didn't last long and didn't really leave a lot of lacing.

Smells quite good, lots of roasted malt, tons of chocolate malt, plenty of coffee, a tinge of booziness.

Taste is almost a malt bomb of a coffee stout. You can taste the chocolate and roasted malts almost like you were brewing them up right now. Plenty of coffee comes through. A little bit of fruit and some vanilla too. A touch of astringency and some tobacco.

Body is quite typical of Southern Tier's imperial beers, slick, sweet, full bodied, alcoholic, lingering aftertaste that matches the flavor.

It's another very enjoyable beer, albeit primarily a dessert type beer, slow sipper. I really love this brewery. I have two other new bombers from ST to try and I'm excited already!

A - Pours a dark black-brown color with a finger of frothy khaki-chocolate colored head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of roasted dark chocolate malts and coffee, with some dark fruits, anise, vanilla, and some booze.

T - Starts off with some roasted chocolate malts and roasted coffee with some light black licorice. Through the middle, the coffee flavor gets stronger with some dark fruits and light vanilla coming through. The finish is a mix of roasted cocoa and lightly bitter coffee beans with some dark fruit, molasses, and some booze.

M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a sweet, roasted, and warming finish.

D - Very drinkable. Nice big coffee stout. Really nice balance of coffee and chocolate flavors.

I'd been quite excited for this one, and had been saving it. Finally deciding it would be a good way to wake up on my last day in the city (what with the coffee and all).

I poured it into a port glass (the closest I had to the suggested snifter). Pours a deep espresso brown bordering on black. the edges as I tilt the glass this way and that taper back across a gradient. No head to speak of, but still minimal lacing as I drink (?).

Sticking my nose deep into this makeshift beer I get primarily an espresso bitterness, with hints of bakers chocolate.

As I sip, the taste stays true to the promises made to my olfactory bulb. Dark espresso and chocolate. Many strong espresso beers opt for the alcoholic coffee route, but this one is balanced well, nuanced and pleasing all around. The taste is sweeter than the smell suggested, as the chocolate tends closer to chocolate syrup than it does the bittersweet chocolate my nose caught.

Very smoothe. Imminently drinkable. The 10% is masked quite well. This is an excellent example of a coffee stout done well. I mentioned in my preamble being quite excited to drink this one. Unlike certain other brews I've finally cracked recently, this one delivers and satisfies that anticipation. If you have even a passing interest in the style, definitely check it out. I am curious, however, now about their Mokah, as I felt that this one had a strong coffee chocolate to it, so I'm not sure what an even more chocolate-centric brew might present. A, but that's a (t)ale for another day...
