Darker than I thought it was going to be, reddish coloring
Cinnamon and spice on the nose, Big malt and big hops. Alcohol
Malty and roasty, Cereal grain taste as it warms up
On the sweet side but blends nice with the hops for a great balance.
It reminded me of Backwoods Bastard as I was sipping, however not quite on par

I haven't had a ton of barley wines, but I thoroughly enjoyed this beverage.

2016 batch. Pours a beautiful dark copper. Nose is slightly harsh, molasses and raisins but very noticeable alcohol. Complex, malty taste, like hoppy brown sugar. Surprisingly light mouth feel. Would be a great barley wine in a year or two.

2010 bomber poured into a tulip. Appears a clear mahogany with khaki cap that fades leaving stringy lace.

Aroma of raison, toasted malts, toffee and slight biscuit grains. As it warms, a touch of herbal character.

Taste is tannic/astringent like strong black tea that fades into herbal bitterness, toffee and molasses with no residual sweetness. Slight raisony alcohol.

Medium in body and modestly carbonated. A decent brew thats leaves the mouth feeling weird from all the tannic character/astringency.

Barleywine styles are my favorite, but I found this a little harsh. It is worth the try, but may benefit from sitting a while. I bought another and plan on letting it sit about a year to see if it mellows out any. This would be an excellent recipe for some sort of barrel. I just find it a little out of tune as is.

12 oz bottled. DOB 01/05/16.

A: dark copper, light brown hue. head follows the same route and has a light brown tint to it. minor haze. good lacing and retention.

S: vanilla, dark brown sugar. there is definitely a hop aroma but hard to pick out specifics.

T: molasses, burnt caramel, and a rich hop pine flavor starts this out. you can definitely taste a significant portion of sweet unfermented sugars. the hop bitterness combats that to some extent rounded out by some alcohol heat.

M: moderate amount of carb on a full body.

D: drinks pretty good. the heat is super manageable. wondering what time will do to this as there aren't too many rough edges to smooth out. not a ton of frills or complexity, but a solid barleywine.
