Bottle poured in a pint mug

Appearance: Cloudy orangy amber with a one finger solid white head and a consistent lacing around the mug.

Smell: sweet pumpkin, sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, banana. Smells pretty fruity, but the main smell is roasted pumpkin and spices of some sort.

Taste: This tastes just like pumpkins. It's sweet, but not to the point that its bothersome. I can sense a sweet minty presence in this brew. The spices that were added blend very well with this beer making it well balanced. The pumpkin stands out towards the front end, and the spices linger on towards the finish with a minty feel to it. I cannot taste the alcohol at all on this. Mainly pumpkin and minty cinnamon notes toward the end.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall: This is a great beer. It has been aged for a little over a year and I am curious to try the fresh version to see if the pumpkin taste is stronger. I feel like the spices in this one were pretty heavy towards the finish.

bottle into Duvel glass, 11 months of age (Fall 2012 release)

appearance: somewhat cloudy burnt orange, hint of amber and mahogany tones, 2 finger thick white head

smell: pumpkin pie, cinnamon, banana bread, sweet sugary goodness, oatmeal, halloween

taste: The dominant flavors in this are, big surprise, pumpkin pie. Most pumpkin beers I have are more pumpkin dominant, but this one reeks and tastes of pumpkin pie specifically, and lots of cinnamon and banana bread notes. It just tastes like fall/halloween in a bottle. Subtle earthy hops balance it out with a smooth, sweet malt backbone and the finish is short and refreshing. This tastes like it is non-alcoholic, I think age has masked it even more. Just the right amount of pumpkin for a great pumpkin beer.

mouthfeel: Not much carbonation at all, and relatively light on the palate.

overall: One of my favorite pumpkin beers, with age it loses its sharp cinnamon profile in favor of more tame pumpkin pie notes, and in my opinion it's for the best. It truly becomes a can of pumpkin pie, sorry for the lack of a better description but that's the only way to accurately describe this beer. I'm excited for this years release.
