Poured this one into a tulip. Makes about two fingers of bright white head with only about an eight ounce pour. The body is orangish amber in color with lots of haze.

The aroma is perfumy and citrusy.

The taste is a little off. It's got the characteristics of the aroma along with honey and burnt cracker.

Mildly carbonated and smooth for an IPA. Overall not happy with this one.

This beer poured a slightly cloudy light amber color and formed a nice foamy off white head that coated the glass with latticed lace as it slowly subsided. A small amount of carbonation is present. An aroma of hops, pine and grapefruit. The flavor was of hops, grapefruit, caramel and a hint of pepper. The body was medium light and the finish was bitter and astrigent. A nice IPA and interesting blend.

I've had this beer a few time earlier this year. This will probably be the last time until next January. Here goes:

A: Pours a hazy, deep straw color. Slight orange tint to it. Foamy head thats leaves sticky lacing with each sip.

S: Citrus hops are upfront, with a bready, almost grainy malt backing it up. Hops arn't overpowering, but they are definetly present.

T: First thing you get is the hops. Taste kinda like lime and orange, with a decent amount of bitterness. The bready malt contributes alot to the flavor as well. Hops arn't out of control, but add a nice citric flavor with medium bitterness. Very good overall.

M: Medium bodied. Some prickly carbonation. Slightly bitter finish. Just about right for a Double IPA.

D: This goes down easy. At 10.5% ABV, this can be dangerous. One bomber is probably enough, but it goes down quicker than one might expect.

Another Southern Tier hit. I personally like the Hoppe more than the Unearhtly, but this gets the best of both worlds. I even get hints of Krampus in here as well. I would like if Southern Tier dropped the ABV a few notches and added more hops to make an over the top hop explosion, but this will have to do for now. Great Stuff.

A: Pours a nice golden color. foamy bone-colored head. Some lacing
S: Grass and Pine. little bit of biscuit. Nice combo.
T: pretty bready up front, solid malt sweetness mixed with a biscuit. slowly transitions to a nice citrusy sweetness, with a slightly syrupy finish
M: not heavy, but the syrupy feel takes it down slightly
D: All in all, pretty high

I saw this in the beer cooler at the grocery store and bought it. I had honestly never even heard of this beer before buying it (beer noob). Pours a light copper color into my tulip glass. A nice thick, foamy head forms, settling into a thin ring around the glass. Smells of pine, citrus (pineapple, grapefruit) and hops. More of a pine aroma than anything else. Tastes rather citrusy and sweet. There is a definite hoppiness to it, as it is a double IPA, but the hops are not overdone. A nice bitterness comes through as well. It's a balanced taste. It's got a lighter mouthfeel than I expected. Leaves a fair amount of stickiness behind, but drinks pretty well. A very solid double IPA.

Clear orange copper with big dense creamy off-white head.
Nose is full of citrus (orange) and piney hops with a light hint of grains.
Lots of resinous, piney bitterness. Noticeable caramel sweetness and bready malt character that is present but pales in comparison to the hops. Slightly boozy.
Moderate carbonation, slightly oily mouthfeel that comes off feeling a bit thin.
Not my favourite DIPA but a decent representation of the style. A pricey bomber so not sure I'll be seeking out too many more, but was an enjoyable experience nonetheless. I'd be interested in sampling the various parts that comes together to create this one.

Comsumed on 02.15.08 at Liberty Street Tavern in Allentown, PA...

Murky and amber in colour, thick and heady out of the bottle. Good nose full of hops with citrus and piney goodness playing well. Smooth on the tongue with the hops and malty backbone dancing well. A little alcohol noted, but hardly "hot". Overall pretty enjoyable but I have had others in this style that I prefer more. Still, another solid Southern Tier offering.

A: the color is a very nice amber color somewhat hazy with a whiffy white head that is very sticky and delicious

S: semi floral but not too strong very pleasant not earth shattering

T: absolutely more floral than some, very herbaly and almost spicey, leaves a nice layer on the tongue with a touch of bitterness but nothing that hurts you. this is a good beer, though as the smell portends it is not earth shattering

i think this beer is very drinkable especially for 10.5% and its very good. i think its a solid entry in the category though not as distinguishable as others

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a tulip, then small wine glass.

A: Color is a dark orange, bordering on a hazy brown. Thin off-white head died off quickly, leaving some splotch lacing on the side of the glass.

S: Some odd earthy hop flavors with a strong presence of wet dog. Not really digging this.

T: Some citrus hops up front, but nothing that big. Caramel, sweet malts quickly take over as well as a continued musty taste characterized as 'wet dog' from the smell. Finish is odd, a flavor I can't place. Plus some definite bitterness. Not that great.

M: Medium to heavy body with decent carbonation.

D: Not enjoyable at all. It was first poured into a tulip glass and I thought that perhaps it wasn't quite clean. So I poured a fresh taste into a confirmed clean class and it didn't help much. Bottle was purchased fresh, but perhaps this was a bad batch? This was not up to ST quality and not good. It was drain poured, which I don't often do for an $8 beer.

Perhaps my favorite beer from Southern Tier?

Cloudy amber. Thick head of frothy off-white. Very, very good retention. Excellent lacing.

Stunning hop nose. Piney. Citrus fruity. Red fruit fruity. Chalky. Caramelish.

In the mouth it's medium-full and surprisingly smooth.

The flavor is bold and bright. I'm not sure what the blend of Southern Tier beers is - and I really couldn't care less - but this baby rocks! Malt and citrus appear just up-front with a bit of fruitiness (may be yeasty fruitiness, hoppy fruitiness, or a combination), immediately followed by piney-ness, and then some more honeyish and grain malt character as grassy hops and a solid bitterness rise at the mid-point. Some minor alcohol can be detected, but that's kind of expected; and the bitterness is brisk but not over-done.

Overall, it's a pretty well-balanced and well-rounded drinkable Imperial IPA. Enjoyable!

Fairly fizzy off-white foam rises atop a very pretty tawny golden amber brew, nice and cloudy.

Big tangerine aroma, nice and hoppy with a slightly sweet-sour tang.

Flavor kicks off with a hugely surprising biscuity malt burst, then the citrusy hops take over and flavors of orange, peach, and butterscotch emerge in a wave of sweetness. A faint hay note lurks in the taste profile, as well, with a bit of mustiness. Tastes ever so slightly oaky, as well.

Mouthfeel is reasonably effervescent, and this beer thus has tons of body without being cloying. Finishes nice and clean.

Overall drinkability is pretty good based on the smoothness, but the sugary sweetness dampens it, like with other beers from Southern Tier.

- Wow this beer is a punch to the face with hops, great citrus and floral hop nose. Complete avalanche of hops with a perfect malt background.
- Gives a great hop after flavor as well.
- Blending these two beers together was an ingenious idea and every beer that this company makes is worthless compared to this because they combined their two best beers into one beer that destroys the rest... The price is higher than most of their beers, but the price is well worth the quality. Save yourself the journey; skip right to the end! This is Southern Tier's "Best Beer".

I got a bottle each from Nutbrown and Joe1510 in trade...thanks Alan & Joe!

Hmmm..waxed over cap on this 22oz bottle that I found to be kind of a pain in the ass to open(Hey, I've dealt with Grand Teton waxed bottles) pours a clear light gold with at least a 2 finger head of foam that shrinks some but never less than about a 1/2" by the end of the session. Lots of lacing too!

The smell is *very* nice for the style and the way I almost expect from the style: equal portions of caramel malt & grapefruit hops.

The taste starts of a bit sweeter than I would have expected judging from how balanced the nose was but the hops are there all right, nice notes of grapefruit, some floral, a tiny bit of grass and it's still dominated by the sweetness from the malt. Maybe just a tad too sweet, even for me. The balance just isn't at the level I like for a DIPA but that's not saying that I'm not liking what I'm drinking. Confused yet? ;^)

The mouthfeel is really thick for me, the carbonation is on the medium-light side and the finish is slightly bitter. It's good stuff but finishing one bottle will do it for me as I'm starting the notice the abv though I don't notice it in the taste nor much during and after the swallow.

Bottom line: I think it's a really good DIPA that the only complaint I have for it is that it's just a *tad* bit too sweet. Not too much of a complaint, when I think about it.

22oz bomber poured into an 8oz imperial glass.

Pours a rich cloudy amber with a small light brown thin head with a nice amount of lacing. Nose is lightly sweet and malty with a nice hop note but it's fairly faint.

Taste is hoppy and bitter, mouthfeel is full and rich. It's sweet and malty very east coast. It's quite tasty with a light spicy note and a caramel finish.

A: Pours amber with a finger of white head that recedes into a halo.

S: This smells more like a barleywine than an IPA. Huge whiffs of caramel, brown sugar, candied fruit, toffee, and malt with just a hint of grassy hops.

T: Huge blast of sweet, caramel malt up front with the middle mellowing out into candied fruit in the middle, followed by slight hops in the aftertaste.

M: Sticky, well carbonated, nice mouthfeel, warms well.

O: This is quite an interesting "IPA". I know it's a blended ale, but it tastes like a hoppy barleywine. Still, this is a very tasty brew and I would buy again.
