Super solid chocolate stout. I think this one compares pretty nicely to Rogue Chocolate stout. It's not quite as balanced as I would like, and comes off as a little bitter on the finish, but the chocolate is still really nice in this one.

Pitch black with a nice tan head that fades and laces well. Notes ranging the entire chocolate span, milk chocolate, malted chocolate, cocoa, sweet dark and bitter dark chocolate. Velvety smooth mouthfeel, no hint of alcohol, coating and creamy with a chalkiness on the finish. Wow, this exceeded my expectations. Great feel, fantastic and complex for something that focuses on one flavor profile.

A- Pours a not quite jet black that is nonetheless opaque. With an aggressive pours gives a nice two fingers of tan head that after about 5 minutes or so are nothing more than a ring around the top. I always seem to be biased toward the look of porters and stouts but oh well, it looks good! (4.25)

S- ENORMOUS chocolate. They are not kidding when they say made with real chocolate or whatever. Definitely caramel in the background as well, as well as a bit of toffee, with just a hint of roast and coffee. No burnt or smoke in this one but. It's truly something to experience. (5)

T- Dark chocolate, dark fruits, and quite a bit of hop bitterness. The substantial caramel that was in the background in the aroma really isn't present here for me. I slight smokiness is perceived as well. While chocolate is still the most dominant characteristic, not as remarkable as the nose. Nonetheless, still solid. (4)

F- Fairly creamy, just enough carbonation. Interesting to me that their site describes it as being "heavier bodied". While no one would mistake it for a Bud, I find it to be fairly medium bodied for an Imperial Stout. Either way, it's what I expected. (4)

O- A very interesting beer with a unique and incredible aroma. Unfortunately for me, the taste doesn't quite live up to the standard that is set by the nose, but even so this a really good Imperial Stout and one that I think all stout lovers should try. (4.31)

Poured 12oz bottle into glass. 10%abv

Appearance- Pours a dark reddish brown with tan head quick to dissipate. Opaque and coal black as seen in the glass.

Smell- Warmed and melted intense aroma of dark chocolate. Chocolate over rules any other smells.

Taste- Roasted malts give way to velvety waves of dark choclate upon the palate. Fresh cocoa abounds. Hints of vanilla as well as some warming alcohol is felt. Bitterness picks up slightly in the finish with a bit of smokiness.

Mouthfeel- Heavy in body with low carbonation.

Overall- This one reminded me of melted chocolate. Use of real chocolate and backing that up with the appropriate malts seems to of been well done. The alcohol burn was evident however and could of been more masked. A flavorful dessert of a beer.

Bottle (DOB 10/22/15) into pint glass. Pours like used motor oil - dead black, thick and viscous. Light brown head. Initial impression is (d'oh) dark bittersweet chocolate. Like liquid chocolate cake icing. There's a tiny bit of hops in the finish, but not much. Thick mouthfeel. Light carbonation. Alcohol is not at all evident.
This is not a beer that I could take in large doses, but it sure is fun as an occasional indulgence.

Picked up a bomber from Craft Beer Hop Stop on Veteran's Day for $10.99. Bottled on 10/27/15.

Beer poured black with a nice tan head that has some hang time.

Nose is of dark cocoa but kind of different...hard to describe.

Taste is bitter dark cocoa well played into a mildly roasted malt base. There is enough hopping to balance things out nicely.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth.

Overall a very nice beer that is fine as the beer of the night or paired with something chocolatey for dessert!

P: Thickish, Black, riot beer ran scant head but a decent enough lacing.
A: Sweet chocolate, dark fruit, roasted malts with a hint of alcohol.
T: Bitter, sweet chocolate, cocoa, dark berries, roasted coffees and malts, hints of vanilla
M: Heavy body, very fine balance of all of the complexed flavours.
O: This is a tremendous offering from Southern Tier. Far and away one of the best tasting IS I've had to date.

12oz bottle - DOB 10/22/15, 2:12PM. Served in a snifter.

Appearance: Black with no light coming through. Thin dark tan head with some occasional strands of lacing that slowly slid back down the glass.

Smell: Exactly like a rich medium percentage-cacao content dark chocolate bar, with a nice underlying sweetness. With a swirl there is some hint of alcohol in the nose.

Taste: Very rich. Bittersweet chocolate at the start and finish, with a solid rich sweetness in the middle. Some coffee notes as well. Bitterness at the finish does take on some herbal/leafy qualities, but mixed in with the bitterness you would get from a very high cacao content dark chocolate bar. Pretty obvious that this beer lives up to its name.

Mouthfeel: Thick and creamy with just right carbonation. Definitely coats the mouth and teeth.

Overall / Drinkability: As often with this brewery - a rich sweet full flavored dessert in a bottle, but definitely still an American Imperial Stout. So good I wish I had the 22oz bomber rather than the 12oz bottle, but this beer is quite good and is definitely worth having again. Very good by itself as a slow sipping and savoring beer, but would be good with a steak or burger. Definitely a beer for those with a sweet tooth, like me!

1rst taste. Loved Oranj Chocolat.Didn't see any reviews on that though I know it's seasonal. Have a few stored and like this just as much. Beautiful smell look and color. As with the oranj not over powering with the flavors and not boozy.

Looks like liquid chocolate when it comes out. A little too carbonated but pours a fine head. Nice sweet-to-bitter chocolate taste. Fun beer to share on an occasion.

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass. Big chocolate aroma followed by biter chocolate flavor. A bit of alcohol comes through in the aftertaste. Medium mouth feel with medium carbonation. Good stuff. Cheers!

This beer pours an opaque jet black with a half finger mocha head. There is next to no retention and no trace of lacing. The smell is a chocolate bomb, both sweet and bitter as well as roasted malts. Taste is the same with a nice bitterness that cancels out the sweetness and a bit of alcohol on the finish. Feel is very full and it really coats your whole mouth. Overall a very nice stout, although it may be too chocolatey and a touch too sweet. It doesn't effect my rating, but at $17.99 per 4pk there are better options available.

I think this is a 2012 bottle that has been in my cellar since then. This beer poured a dark black color into my snifter. The nose is still very sharp of the chocolate and the fine roasted malts. The chocolate comes through in the taste very smooth and mellow. The mouth feel is smooth and pleasant. After 4 years in the cellar this is sill a very nice drinking stout.

Pours a black oil with a tan head that hangs out for a few. The aroma is tons of chocolate, sweet and bitter. If you thought the nose was nice, you'll love the taste. Tons of chocolate well balanced with the bitter and not overly sweet. It has a relatively thick/heavy body that I love. This is my favorite offering from southern tier.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into pint glass in January 2016.

Appearance: Dark black with a thick tan/brown head. Head is thick, but does not have much lacing.

Smell: Strong aroma of roasted malts and chocolate. There is some bitterness, but overall the roasted coffee dominates the others.

Taste: There is a strong chocolate flavor. There is also a nice balance with the malts and roasted coffee flavors. There is some hop flavors to enhance the taste and add some complexity. There is a strong alcohol presence. Great aftertaste.

Mouth-feel: Very thick, but with a smooth creamy body.

This is a strong Double Imperial Stout, and it has a pronounced chocolate flavor, but it also has a variety of flavors that adds a nice complexity to the beer. Although this is a big beer, it is smooth and really enjoyable to drink. Overall a great double imperial stout, and one I want to drink again.

Deep dark black body with a light fluffy tan head. Aroma screams rich chocolate milk, dark cacao and...that's about it! Rich, smooth with a pleasant bitterness. Roasty notes at the end, but not overpowering. Quite a delicious beer...nice.

OK, so this is a fantastic beer. I see that there are much, much better and more in depth reviews here other than mine so I won't go there. However, I will say that this stout doesn't pour as pitch black as some but the smell and taste are terrific. It's straight up like drinking a liquified Hershey chocolate bar in beer form with the addition of a well crafted mouth feel. Overall, this is a must try stout for those who like chocolate.

Pours dark black with a mocha head.

Scent of bittersweet chocolate, a little roast, a hint of alcohol, sensing some caramel.

Taste: velvety mouthfeel with a slight tingle, probably from the alcohol. Dark chocolate. Roasted.

Great imperial stout with a leaning towards dark chocolate instead of the usual roasted malts up front taste ive been seeing a lot. Great beer.

This beer is fabulous...my favorite chocolate for sure. It's got nice body and isn't too sweet. Perfect combination of beer and chocolate. I enjoyed every sip.

To me, it tastes like the liquid chocolate from French Broad Chocolates in Asheville, NC. If you haven't tried that, you should, and if you haven't tried this beer, you should.

Pours a black color with an inch and a half of coffee colored head that leaves nice amount of lacing. The nose is roast and chocolate. The taste is bitter chocolate dominant. Everything about the beer points to quality. It is just a little bitter for me to he served as a dessert beer. That is the only reason it didn't have a higher score from me.

Pitch black with a small light brown head. Smells like sweetchocolate syrup, with light coffee undertones. Taste like dark bitter chocolate, that finishes with a sweet bitter choclate. Small note of alcohol for a 10% beer. Light carbonation, semi think. Very nice mouthfeel, that lingers for a long while. Overall a very good imperial chocolate stout, could differently drink more than one.

Poured into a Saint Somewhere wine-style glass. No freshness date.

A- Pours a fully opaque black color with a 1/2 inch light brown head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a large center patch of sheer surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves small clots behind.

S- Smells like straight Hershey's syrup covered in crumbled walnuts.

T- Fudge, hot chocolate, malted milk balls. All the decadent chocolate notes are there with minimal alcohol flavor considering the ABV. There's also some caramel, vanilla, peanut brittle and a hint of coffee. Bitter roast aftertaste. The sweetness is definitely there the whole way through the glass but it never gets too overbearing (for my taste at least).

M- Creamy and luscious with medium-low carbonation and the fullest of bodies.

O- The ultimate chocolate dessert beer. You have to like sweet stuff to appreciate it but, if you do, you definitely want this.
