Poured from a year old bottle into a snifter at around 45°F

Appearance: Pours a solid black with a one finger foamy brown head. Looks fantastic

Smell: Straight milk and bakers chocolate, with undertones of vanilla bean and booze

Taste: They ain't jokin with this chocolate stout! I get all varieties.. milk, dark, and bakers chocolate. A chocolate overload and not much else

Mouthfeel: Medium mouthfeel; Silky smooth with slight bitterness

Overall: I was taken aback by this one and don't quite know what to think of it yet. Is this even a beer? Smells and tastes like liquid chocolate to me, which isn't a bad thing at all, but I expected more complexity in a stout. Could the year of age have mellowed out the malts which brought out more chocolate? Id pick up a BBCS or a Founders IS before this any day, and theyre cheaper too. I definitely prefer more of a roasted malt presence, but this is quite the dessert beer. Good job Southern Tier!

Aged about 2 years, poured from their bomber bottle...

Appearance - A slightly aggressive pour yields just over 2 fingers of rich medium brown foam. The body appears opaque and dark sepia brown/black, but when held right up to a light a few shards of murky garnet just barely break through.

Smell - Oh my goodness - with a blindfold I was smelling a freshly opened can of hershey's syrup, or a jar of smuckers fudge... HUGE milk chocolates, dark sweet chocolate, and a whiff of sweet vanilla whipped cream. And there's something else there too... I'll be damned - chocolate covered cherry candies. And a whiff of just baked chocolate chip cookies...

Taste - A very pleasant surprise - the nose seemed that this would be an overly sweet stout but it is not. This is certainly a rich array of chocolates, but I'm also getting some semi-sweet dark fruit, mostly black cherry. There is also a wonderful mild roast here, and even a touch of sweet black licorice long into the finish, and a few crumbs of lightly burnt chocolate cookies and a few lightly bitter coffee grains.

Mouthfeel - This is just over medium in mouthfeel, not heavy and mouthcoating as you night expect, but the full gambit of chocolate flavors are bold and fill the mouth. This stout is creamy smooth, and the carb is on the lighter side and feels like a smooth foam across the tongue, allowing the chocolate flavors to build. But at the end of the sip there are a few edges at the sides and back of the tongue, and relieves the onslaught of chocolates.

Overall - If you really like chocolate, and I do, then you will love this stout. It is not overly sweet, but still very bold and chocolaty. I appreciate the additional flavors of black cherry, light roast and licorice that give this an overall balance and complexity. Try this if you have the chance.
