Full disclosure - I am a rabid fan of beers that are chocolate and/or coffee in flavor. With that said, I don't think there is an aspect of this beer that I don't like. It hits all the right notes. The most amazing (and dangerous) thing about it is that it doesn't taste like 10% ABV. It hits you like a ton of bricks in 20 minutes if you've been ferociously sipping it like a milkshake. The breakdown:

Look - Very opaque, and "motor oil" dark. Thin, dark tan head forms during the pour.

Smell - Sweet luscious chocolate is the dominate smell here. Maybe some coffee, but mostly sweet luscious chocolate.

Taste - BAM! CHOCOLATE. Chocolate is the overwhelming taste here. It is sweet, but "smart" sweet. Not like that cheap Easter candy shit that is "pure sugar sweet". IMO, it has just the right amount of sweet. Chocolaty sweetness, followed by an aftertaste which fades slowly into a duller, bitter chocolate. The slightest alcohol taste pokes through on aftertaste, hardly noticeable.

Feel - The feel doesn't disappoint either. You immediately notice a nice little thickness to the beer. It's not watery, and it's not molasses. It fits nicely in between. And shortly thereafter, you get the micro-carbonation sensation on your tongue.

Overall - As well-balanced as you can get if you're into the dessert type beer.

From tap at Southern Tier's new location in Pittsburgh. This is sweeter than the Mokah we had today. We enjoyed the Mokah more than the Choklat, but this is still a great brew

Choklat

Look: Super dark, with little brown head

Smell: Really intense coffee and chocolate hit you.

Taste: It’s like drinking liquified chocolate. Slight coffee underlies this, but not as present as a flavor as it was an aroma. The chocolate flavors linger in your mouth even when the bomb of chocolateness fades. Refreshing finish, the sweetness of the chocolate doesn’t overwhelm your palette, which makes this beer enjoyable. Really intense flavors of chocolate / coffee.

Chocolate flavors very strong and present on the initial taste. Those are the main flavors throughout the beer, maybe a wee bit of bitterness, but it was predominantly a coffee/chocolate beer. Drink this if you like coffee / chocolate

From 22oz bottle into slightly flared snifter-style drinking vessel. Head is a foamy light brown, and dissipates fairly fast, but a ring around the edge remains for awhile.

Pours a dark, dark, brown. Close to black.

Aroma is an astoundingly strong, pure coffee and chocolate. Intense.

Feel is very balanced. Nothing special, though. Not very thick, and some carbonation to keep things lighter than expected for a dark beer like this. Micro-bubbles on the tongue are nice.

The taste certainly lives up to it’s name; this is a chocolate blast, for sure. Finish is a little sour-fruity almost, though not very strong compared to the chocolate and coffee notes. Some dark fruit, and a little bitterness are there as well. After the swallow, a stickiness remains. Not sweet, though.

AROMA: Chocolate (Duh),
LOOK: Thick Dark Black appearance with no Head.
TASTE: Sweet Chocolate, I see now on the bottle that bittersweet belgian chocolate is added to the already chocolate malt; a little syrupy…..dare I say too much chocolate.

Maybe ok for a Dessert Beer.

Giving this a 2nd try. Still overly sweet. Alcohol is masked well.
Maybe i was a little too harsh the first time, but I still think this is too sweet as most ST Blackwater seems to be.
2.90 up to 3.48.

Poured as black with a small tan head. Smelled like dark chocolate. Tasted like a melted Hersey bar. But, not to sweet. A bitter chocolate taste. Overall, it makes a great dessert beer. If you love chocolate and beer, this is for you.

Oh my God! I haven't tasted anything this good in a long time.
If I hadn't read the side of the bottle, I would not have known it was a 10% beer.
I could have drank quite a few of these. It was like drinking chocolate straight out of the churning river in the Wonka factory.
OMG! Soooo good! I will figure out how to make this myself. I must have more.

Look: A thin tan head circles a head of deep mahogany, then quickly dissipated to reveal a rim of chestnut colored highlights.

Smell: As chocolate as chocolate gets in the beer world! The scent is one of moist, delectable, chocolate chip brownies straight out of the oven on steroids and I am, needless to say, loving it.

Taste: Rich chocolate and vanilla swirl soft serve ice cream, with a square of bitter cooking chocolate to toughen things up. The slightest dash of dried jalapeño brings balance as well...and it's needed: those layers of fudge last, and last... some mixed nuts bring some festive complexity. To the party.

Mouthfeel: A relaxed creaminess with mild carbonation and a slightly chewy finish fits into the candy bar for grownups theme.

Overall: A dream come true for the lover of both chocolate and beer. This recipe rivals the tastiest of truffles without succumbing to cloying sweetness. Bitterness and spiciness balance the scales enough to make things mature and not at all cloying. Very. Well. Done. A dessert for even those without a sweet tooth.
