Nitro Crème BrûléeNitro Crème Brûlée
Notes: The Blackwater Series has unleashed the popular flavor Crème Brulee in nitro for the next level drinking experience. NITRO Crème Brulee offers cascading, creamy richness with notes of vanilla and custard with a smooth milky finish that is uncannily true to the namesake dessert.

Southern Tier Brewing Co. "Nitro Crème Brûlée"
9.6 fl. oz. can, coded "D.O.B. 10/24/19 10:22:31 FL"
$4.29 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Wow, how long has it been since I've had a Crème Brûlée from Southern Tier? I recall having one not too long ago (September 8, 2018 @ The Gingerbread Man in Carlisle, PA), but my first one was back in 2008 - that's 12 years ago! Anyway, I'm not that big of a dessert beer kind of guy unless it's Thanksgiving or Christmas, but I recall liking the Crème Brûlée a lot. So let's see about this "nitro" version. It's an opaque black beneath a creamy head of tan foam. It might be the creamiest head I've ever seen. The aroma is like cake. It's sugary with notes of vanilla and caramel. It's stunning. They're using real vanilla beans as well as natural flavors, so I'm not sure what's what, but I still have to wonder what this costs them to make given the very high price of vanilla beans. A certain part of me wishes that the aroma was more complex but then I remind myself that the were going for the aroma of a Crème Brûlée and they've certainly nailed that. On to the flavor then... wow! There's the additional complexity I was looking for. I'm finding sugar, vanilla, golden and orange caramel, a subtle touch of toastiness, a dusting of cocoa powder, and just an edge of soft roastiness underneath. It's sweet but not too sweet, and it dries fairly quickly in the finish leaving behind some sugar, a drizzle of caramel, and a touch of ashen roastiness. Keep in mind, this is a dessert beer! In the mouth it's medium bodied and creamy smooth. I wish I had a regular one so that I could try it side by side as I can't tell if the "nitro" treatment has helped it or not. So, once again, I'm blown away by this beer. I really should try to remember to buy some more, and then remember that it's in the basement and have one every now and again. Of course, I have so many beers to get through - first world problems, right?

Pours a very effervescent chestnut with a pinky of mocha colored head. Stellar head retention above average lacing

S: Vanilla, caramel, marshmallow

T: Truly follows the nose, a touch of coffee on the edges, plenty dry. Creamy caramel, notes, vanilla, plenty of sugary dryness as this warms. Finishes uber dry, sugary with caramel & vanilla

MF: Medium body, very creamy carbonation, was hoping for a little more thickness

This totally works for me, some people decry the artificial flavors, but this tastes just like creme brule to me. The epitome of an over the top dessert beer

Poured from a can into a snifter fairly hard. Nitro took a minute to settle into a couple fingers of whiteish head. Amazing smell, exactly like creme brulee. Taste is almost identical, almost too sweet in the beginning but quite good, especially when paired with a sweet dessert. Creamyry texture and medium body. Excellent dessert stout.

9.6oz Can poured into a snifter

A- pours deep black in color with a huge creamy khaki colored head that has great retention before settling into a one-finger head that sticks around

S- smells just like a creme brûlée; there's a big butterscotch and caramelized sugar note that dominates the aroma, followed by undertones of vanilla beans, custard pie, milk chocolate, toffee and marshmallow

T- creamy vanilla custard up front, quickly followed by butterscotch, caramelized brown sugar, toffee and vanilla cream. Mid-palate brings out undertones of chocolate cream, the finish brings out more butterscotch, caramel and vanilla custard

M- medium/heavy body leads to a thick and creamy mouthfeel that continues into a silky smooth finish

O- I love this new nitro blackwater series, I hope that they continue it for a long time

12 oz. Can marked Best By 9/25/2021

Can emits a loud gush when opened, but the head is restrained. Nearly opaque black with one finger of tan fine-bubbled head. Head is stubborn with legs and dull curtains.
Strong vanilla and toffee aromas, lighter coconut and milk chocolate.
Pleasing sweet crême brûlée flavor, light coffee undertone.
Smooth nitro feel, viscous coating, no alcohol heat initially, but some builds as the glass warms.
Good application for nitro, a super dessert beer, decadent day drinker.

Southern Tier absolutely nailed this one.

One draft in snifter.

Pours jet black with somid two finger creamy tan/khaki head. Looks awesome.

Smells like toffee, bitersweet chocolate, toasted marshmallow, little bit of graham cracker. wintery desserts reminds me of hot cocoa with lots of marshmallows

Taste, decadant, sweet. Gets better and more pronounced as it warms up. This is everything a dessert beer should be.

Overall- I'm a huge fan. Will be back for more. Every December.

9.6 ounce nitro can BEST BY 09/04/21 poured tulip pint glass at fridge temp 10% ABV. The beer pours dense black with mocha brown head. The head rises a little on a hard pour then the nitro cascade leaves about a 3/8" cap. The aroma is moderate vanilla and custard. The taste is very sweet custard, vanilla with very little roasted malt to be found. Minimal bitterness. The mouthfeel is very full bodied with typical nitro feel and an undry, sticky finish. Overall, not my thing, possibly not beer.

A: opaque; very dark brown in color; 1 finger creamy tan head that receded to a skim cap; very little lacing;

S: a combination of dark chocolate and caramel - similar to a dark chocolate covered caramel candy;

T: follows the nose with a bit of coffee and toffee thrown in; quite sweet throughout;

M: medium bodied; moderate, creamy carbonation; moderately dry finish;

O: doesn't resemble creme brulee in any way other than being sweet; having said that, it's a very interesting beer;

Can fizzles and gurgles. I pour and black liquid flows into my glass and produces a nice tight finger or so of tight, creamy foaminess. Lace is substantial and covers glass with each sip. Like a perfect glass of Guinness, dark, creamy and lovely.

Nose is a full vanilla blast. Char, molasses, and burnt sugar, with a sharp bit of alcohol.

Taste is like the name. Smooth vanilla with a surprisingly custard like stout body. While there is a decent amount of char and mild coffee/latte in the fore, a sweet and dairylike undercurrent carries it forward. Finish has a crisp biting bitterness that cuts the heavy sweetness well. It deposits a vanilla latte on the tongue and firm tea leaf hoppiness on the palate.

Feel is oh so gently carbonated and highly drinkable. Super creamy with just the right amount of chew.

Such a great dessert bee. Goes with any and all holiday staples.
