Notes / Commercial Description:
As scientists, our brewers utilize their materials to exacting standards. As artists, they couldn’t resist the temptation to combine two of our highly acclaimed Blackwater Series Imperial Stouts: Jahva and Choklat. Alone each is perfect, but together as Mokah they are an inimitable expression of two of the world’s most sought after flavors. Enjoy Mokah stout with – or as – your favorite dessert!

I had this beer for the first time at The Fred Bar in Atlanta:

A: Almost black, 1 finger brown head

S: Smells like chocolate milk, coffee, caramel, vanilla

T: Tastes more like coffee than the strong chocolate smell but you can definitely taste the chocolate as well. Burnt malts. Alcohol taste is very present but doesn't taste like 11%

D: It's delicious! I couldn't drink it all night but it's perfect if you're just having 1 or 2 beers in a night. Good dessert beer.

I love this style and really like how Southern Tier isn't afraid to take chances and create good beers like no others you've tasted before.

Something of a choklat/jahva mix that works very well. It looks as an imperial stout should, with its dark brown, bordering on black, pour and off-white head. Decent retention and sticky lace ensue. The aroma is full of wow. Overpoweringly rich chocolate and coffee mingles to create a perfect replica of a damn good cafe mocha. This is continued over into the flavour, and I think is a more accurate take on a mocha than creme brulee was on its intended dose of sweetness. Talking of sweetness... its here in good amounts, along with a good dose of alcohol. Its a little hot yet, and I'd advise those who have it to kick back for a while before opening. Warming, rich and thick the mouthfeel suits the beer and its weight very well indeed, but adds to the overall impression that this is a sipper.

Awesome.

A - Black, with a thin tan head that has no retention or lacing.

S/T - Starts with indulgent, sweet, rich chocolate, than roasted coffee mid palate and finishes again with milk chocolate and some roast bitterness throughout. A perfect blend between the Jahva and Choklat.

M - Full body, low carbonation, slick and creamy across the palate, but leaving a coating of chocolate behind.

O - Having had both the Jahva and Choklat, this a perfect blend between the two. Not too indulgent like the Choklat, with a nice amount of coffee and bitterness from the Jahva. I'll get this again.

For my 900th review I'll thank andrenaline for including this beauty in our latest trade
A - cold black with a little light getting through at the bottom of the glass, short tan head dissipated to some random islands
S - big shot of sweet milky chocolate, mild roasty and coffee notes, all rich and decadent aromas
T - mix of milk and dark chocolate goodness, espresso compliments and lingers, roasty background, alcohol is there but more sweet than heat making this extra dangerous
M - silky creamy smooth from start to finish, would have guessed half the ABV, dangerous...
O - what a ridiculous beer in the best kind of way, like a rich mocha with a melted chocolate bar stirred in, definitely left wanting more

A: Pitch black in appeatance, leaves a slight tan head at the top, that leaves a nice brown lacing all over the glass.

S: Chocolate, cream, coffee, and just a bit of booze.

T: This taste just like chocolate, a bit of coffee notes throughout, and a bit of booze at the tail end, great tasting.

M: Sticky, very thick and slight carbonation.

O: This beer is fantastic, great winter beer, very enjoyable and taste like dessert.

22oz bomber pours a dark black with a decent amount of foam. Smell is of dark chocolate. The taste is of strong chocolate with a hint of coffee. So much fucking chocolate in this beer, its beautiful. I swear I just ate a hersey bar. So damn smooth for the 11%. Loads and loads of chocolate. I can't wait to try the Choklat. Very damn awesome beer. Everyone should buy this beer if they see it.

A - This stout is pretty dark, just a hint of light can pierce it. Not a lot of head, maybe an 1/8 of an inch and it disappears quickly. Decent lacing across the glass.
S - Smells like a brown tootsie roll pop. Nice and chocolatey, with a bit of coffee mixed in there.
T - Strong chocolate taste, sweet too. Coffee is stronger here than in the smell, a nice blend of flavors. Alcohol is present, but not overpowering. I guess that should be expected from 11% abv.
M - Pretty carbonationed for a stout, coarse over the tongue. Once the fizz fades, has a light feel to it.
D - Very drinkable brew, there's almost nothing I didn't enjoy about it. Mouthfeel is a bit rough, but not necessarily bad. Overall this was a pleasure to drink and I'm looking forward to picking up some more Southern Tier brews.

Pours deep, dark brown with a modest mocha head. Smells of chocolate and coffee with a strong alcohol component. This beer is big on flavor, with rich dark chocolate and gourmet coffee. The body is smooth and substantive, an excellent complement to the rich taste. The high ABV is respectably mellowed while the beer is still at its coldest (though still hardly invisible). As it warms, the alcohol becomes more strident--the only real flaw I can point out. Normally, I tend to enjoy dark beers more as they warm, but that's not the case here, as the alcohol becomes something of a distraction. The luxurious flavor profile, along with an eagerness to "beat the heat", make this imperial stout way too easy to imbibe without conscience. Another winning stout from Southern Tier.

Recieved this in a trade from a great trader, brewdan. Thanks a bunch.
As this beer leaves the bottle its brown and as it builds in the glass appears black with a very small tan head that fades to a ring quickly leaving a bit of lacing.
The nose is heavy of milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee and creamer, pretty rich nose to this brew.
The taste is about what you would expect from the nose, very rich and full of chocolate and coffe, some cocoa and vanilla as well, not much alcohol present at all.
Very smooth medium body on this beer with a creamy finish, no alcohol heat, can't believe how well hidden it is.
Great beer I wish I could drink on a regular basis.

Mokah, A Stout Brewed with Chocolate and Coffee. "Imperial" Mokah.

Jamaican coffee, Belgian chocolate, caramel, chocolate & black malts...11%? We're in for some fun.

Aroma is all chocolate, coffee below, hops muted....appearance, utter darkness, rich, roasted brown head....that aroma is to kill for though...so, rich, bittersweet, ...is it my birthday already?

Taste:Insane! Everything I try from these guys goes further and further. Jahva, and Oat, and Choklat...these can be pushed further and made deeper, richer, fuller and more expressive in flavor? Damn right.
Bittersweet, coffee mingled with rich cocoa flavor...liquefied chocolate frosting.

Holy macaroni, this is great stuff. Full-bodied, long, luxurious finish. Damnably delicious. Pretty amazing, never quite tasted quite this much genuine chocolate flavor in a stout. Intense, decadent, almost indecent.
Yum, mmm!

Pours pitch black with little to no head. Smells of chocolate and coffee, a beautiful mocha (no surprise) aroma that makes this seem like it would go great with some vanilla ice cream. Taste is a perfect combination of the two, and somehow the mixture of Jahva and Choklat manages to outperform both. Slightly syrupy on the mouthfeel like Hershey's syrup infused with earthy coffee, but not overly so. Sweet and good for dessert or a cold winter Friday night. Excellent.

Pours pure black with a small tan head.

The smell is milk chocolate.

The taste is milk chocolate, light coffee, with some bitterness on the finish.

The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy.

Overall an excellent beer, the chocolate over powers the coffee but it's still good.

22 ounce bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown with about an inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both decent. The aroma is nice and sweet. I mostly smell chocolate, but with a bit of roasted malt and coffee noticable. Taste is pretty much like the aroma. The strongest flavor is of milk and bittersweet chocolate, with some roasted malt and coffee in there too. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's creamy and coating. Drinkability is pretty good, it's very smooth and easy to drink (well, if you like sweeter tasting beers like this one). The 11% ABV isn't very noticable at first, but it does catch up to you after a while. It's a pretty good beer, I liked it a lot.

appearance: Black with a well....mocha head.
smell: Oh man! I teetered on a 5. Malted milk ball, dark chocolate Mocha! This works and then some.
taste: More of the same! Weirdly enough, it isn't over sweet.
mouthfeel: Full bodied, creamy goodness.
drinkability: So well balanced that the intense flavors and surprisingly dry finish make this much more drinkable †han expected.

A great beer, taste as described. Opened this brew it is really stong worth drinking and taste is as described as it is nice coffee dark chocolate kind of drink. Would have again and worth having if never had.

I would also suggest pouring this into a nice snifter or a chalice as to get all the flavors of this beer.

SAmple a cellar temp 22 oz bottle that I have sat on for about 3 years. The beer pours jet black with small creamy tan head foaming up that fades to a sturdy edge layer fairly quickly after pouring the beer.
The aroma is rich chocolatey malt, almost like a hot chocolate, very sweet nose. No hops and not really any booze on the nose even at 10% ABV.
First sip reveals a velvety smooth texture with mild rolling carbonation. The body is fairly thick and coats my palate after every sip.
Flavor is what is anticipated from the nose with sweet chocolate dominating and a little brown sugar and some booze coming through on the finish. This is a big robust beer but isnt hot on the finish and is actually pretty drinkable. Not too complex but is certainly very enjoyable, a big malty sweet beer. NIce beer for a cool evening.

Deep reddish brown, decent initial head, minimal subsequent head.

Chocolate dominates the nose, with a little booze.

More like something that should go over ice cream. Semisweet chocolate, hershey's syrup, coffee, sugar, and wood. Surprisingly not cloying.

Super smooth mouthfeel.

Delicious dessert beer and a really nice sipper. I am a sucker for chocolate and coffee stouts and I enjoyed this one.

The beer pours a dark black color with a thick frothy tan head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is awesome. It has a sweet, chocolate scent that's right in line with the style. The taste is great! It has a smooth chocolate flavor with a nice complimentary coffee taste. This is a damn nice dessert beer. The mouthfeel is good. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a tremendous beer. It's a bit on the sweeter side, but I'm a huge fan.

Nearly black in color with brown and ruby undertones. Small tan head with decent retention in the form of a thin sheet. The aroma is of bittersweet chocolate at first, followed by a sweeter milk chocolate. Coffee follows that, but not heavily, overpowered by the sweetness of the chocolate aromas. Almost french vanilla-like. Dark roasted malts round it out and balance the smell. Very aromatic.

Scrumptious beer. Creamy and chocolatey all the way through each and every sip. Reminded me of Godiva chocolate liqueur. The alcohol is almost undetectable despite its high percentage. Its so creamy that its almost remeniscent of chocolate milk when cold. Coffee flavor pushes its way through, but can't stand up to the creamy milk chocolate flavors. Definitely there though all the way through in a balancing way. Tastes like a mocha basically. Creamy mouthfeel is nearly dead on, finishing slightly drier, but still creamy and lightly bitter. Sweet, no doubt about it so if you don't typically like chocolatey beers, this one may not be for you. I think its an almost perfect dessert beer, and I definitely reccommend this. I am impressed.

A: Pours a bit of an opaque brown with a thin fluffy head with slight lacing.

S: Like I thought it would smell. Mixing Jahva and Choklat. You get that real sweet Hershey syrup smell battling with the coffee flavors of the Jahva.

T: Would be a 5 if the flavor was just a little bigger. It might work to this beers advantage that its not though...

M: Full bodied and slightly silky. A little bit of a hop presence and good carbonation add well to this beer.

D: Not too bad. Could definitely finish a bomber no problem. Would want it at the end of a session however.

On tap at Kickbacks

A-Pours black as night. This is served as a 5.5 ounce pour in a small snifter with just a thin layer of head. Looks menacing though.

S-Rich chocolate and coffee aromas abound along with some roasted malt. This is a very aromatic beer and its smells wonderful.

T-Rich and delicious with chocolate and coffee flavors bold and in your face-in a good way. Some roasted malt as well. Really mirrors the nose and thats not a bad thing. There is a nice juxtaposition of flavors with the sweetness of the chocolate and a slightly bitter bite of the coffee playing off one another to much success. This is a fantastic desert beer.

M-Thick, creamy, smooth, coating. On draft this is more full bodied than the bottle version.

O-My favorite of the Blackwater series. I love this beer and wish I had access to it year round. This is a fantastic dessert beer.

Had this both in Bottle and On Tap. This review is for the Tap experience.

This is a DARK beer. Jet black in color. Small dark brown head which laces the glass the entire time. The smell of this beer is exceptional. You can spell it the minute it is placed in front of you. The taste almost lives up to the smell. It is a very sweet well balanced beer. Hints of malt and chocolate coat your tongue. Coffee flavors come after the initial sip.

The only area that could be a concern would be the drinkability. It is very sweet and after a pint or two it would become a bit much in my opinion.

This is a great combination of their Coffee and Chocolate stouts.

(PS if you do not enjoy sweet beers avoid this one!!)

Draft poured into a snifter

A: Pours a very dark brown, borderline black color with a thin, almost nonexistent eggshell hued head.

S: Aroma is very chocolaty along with some vanilla and caramel notes and a sweet nuttiness, also.

T/M: Flavor is just as sweet with chocolate. It rivals most of the double chocolate stouts for sweetness. It has a medium amount of carbonation and is really reminiscent of cocoa powder or even chocolate cake icing. Unfortunately, I don’t get much of the coffee, but it’s still incredible. The texture weighs heavily on the palette but it really isn’t all that thick.

This is a dessert in a bottle, if ever there was one. If that’s what you’re in the mood for, this might be your best option. I bet it has a bajillion calories.

A - Pours a dark black color with a bit of brown around the edges and a finger of frothy khaki-chocolate colored head. The head fades down fairly slowly leaving behind some nice lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of roasted milk chocolate and coffee with some vanilla, dark fruits, and some booze.

T - Starts out with chocolate malts and light coffee with some sweet lactose and a touch of dark fruit. Through the middle, the coffee comes through stronger with some milk chocolate and a hint of anise. The finish is a mix of chocolate and coffee with some milk sweetness and a touch of roastiness and a bit of booze.

M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth and a bit creamy with a sweet, lightly bitter, and warming finish.

D - Very drinkable. The balance of chocolate and coffee is spot on and the mouthfeel is awesome. A really wonderful beer.

Wow, this beer is good. I had mediocre expectations and the beer blew everything I thought a mocha inspired beer could be. I've never tasted so much chocolate in a beer. It was delightful.

It pours a deep dark brown almost black with minimal head but good lacing when filling my gold rimmed tulip glass.

It smells delicious. Lots of chocolate, a touch of coffee, some caramelized sugar, a bit of vanilla. Simply magnificent smelling.

It tastes the same as it smells, a feat in itself. As I mentioned before, it's so strong with the chocolate and that makes it amazing in my eyes. I get coffee and vanilla, caramelized sugar. This actually reminds me more of creme brulee than their beer of the same name.

The mouthfeel was great as well. Medium in body but the wash reminded me of drinking chocolate milk made from the powder, which in this case was a good thing.

Overall, I think this beer is fantastic. I wish I grabbed more bottles because I could drink one anytime the temp drops below freezing.
