Beautiful, clear and golden body; nice slow rising carbonation; thick and billowy white head with excellent retention. Big aroma of mild caramel interspersed with spicy, pungent hoppiness; a touch of pine resin. Sweet and peppery flavor; caramel again; anise. Heavy body; chewy residual sugars; mild coarseness; semi-dry overall.

This is sample was a bit dated (bottle best by date: 05/06/21), yet it still has a fine balanced and depth going for it. It may be a bit sweet in the taste and mouthfeel, but how much the age of the beer may play a factor in this, I don't know. Still, I like it and would love to try it again.

355 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar,Stavanger. ABV is 8.2%. Golden colour, moderate white head. Nice aroma of citrussy American hops. Distinct flavour of citrussy and resinous American hops, fairly dry. Light bodied for its strength. Dangerously drinkable. Oh dear, was the bottle empty already?

Pours a golden color, but clear, not hazy. Very strong pine resin on the nose with malt in the back. Taste is powerful hops and pine, a bit of sour malt. Bitter, lingering aftertaste. I'm just not getting the citrus a lot of others are talking about, and I wish I did. This is all strong, sour pine to me. Make it your last of the night because it's going to be hard to get a neutral palate back afterward.

The taste of alcohol was noticeable from the first sip. It took me some time to get past it. Some citrus flavor but more subdued in comparison to other IPA’s.

Pours clear gold. Citrus aroma. Heavy hop flavor. Pine and citrus with an equal amount of bitterness. Slight sweet malt finish. Bolder than I expected. Well balanced. One of the better doubles I've had.

Kind of hazy gold with big soapy head. Smells like a double, decent malt with moderate citrus and piney, corn nuts. Flavor follows, a bit soapy. Not crazy bitter.

This is a real solid DIPA that I know I have had many times before but never reviewed, somehow. Time to remedy that I guess. This is a fairly mellow specimen in that it doesn't crush you with hops or booze, but still delivers the goods. Real nice, oily finish that adds character.

Hazed, bright orange/gold appearance with a small, off white head and light lacing. Hoppy aroma with prominent notes of resin and citrus. Soft fruit and sweet malts provide the backbone of the flavor, but the hop profile noted in the aroma reappears in the aftertaste and gives the finish a nice balance.

Poured this out from a can.
A: pours a hazy, gold body with a thick white head with excellent retention and lacing.
S: dank, earthy hop notes with some floral undertones.
T: excellent earthy hop notes with some sweet alcohol notes; subtle sweet lemongrass malt in the aftertaste.
M: medium bodied and smooth.
O: well balanced DIPA; excellent tasting and drinking beer.

An excellent example of a double IPA. As balanced as a beer with an ABV exceeding 8% can be. There is a slight booziness here, but it's a pleasant one. There are plenty of other DIPAs that taste like boilermakers.

-amber can pour with with a slight haze and a 2 cm foam cap. The aroma is slight with malt and spruce notes. The flavor is largely resin and grapefruit. There is a slight sweet aspect and low to moderate hop bitterness. There is no notable alcohol heat. -quite good

Medium poured into a snifter from 12oz bottle. Small head about 1cm, gradually fades leaving a thin layer on top. Amber with enough haze to obstruct seeing clearly through. Smells of citrus and candy. Tastes of pine, citrus and sugar. Quite bitter, fairly hoppy of which I'm guessing is hop juice instead of whole. Leaves the palette wet and has a sort of thick quality about the viscosity. I don't know why it's rated "outstanding" on here. I've had about 100 IPA's that were better. It's okay at best.

Canned 11/25/19 , from an Overpack'd 15pk. Wish it was a little fresher, but this is what's generally available, so fair enough. Let warm to 50F before pouring.

Deep amber-ish gold, with two-finger coarse off-white hed, that quickly dissipates to a 1/4" ring, and single-layer coverage across the whole surface. Slight spotty lacing.

Smell is typical old-school DIPA : smooth, rounded pine , dried citrus rind, with some floral and honey notes.

Taste is moderately bitter grapefruit and pine , tempered with a slightly sweet honey-on-toasted-cornbread-crust finish. A little pine and tang linger on the tongue, after finish.

Feel medium, with very fine sharp carbonation tingle late, that lingers a bit. Leaves a light syrup ycoating .

Overall, not something I'd want all of the time, but enjoyable when I do have it. Having had this numerous times, I can say with some confidence that it's more citrusy when younger , then ages to something leaning more to the piney side, as it is now. Good either way.

L: Brownish tan, sort of a caramel burnt orange, with a big malt base.

S: Not a very strong aroma. I've really got to bury my nose in the glass.

T: I don't like the taste. It's oily and resinous. That's about it. Somehow, with this many hops, it is not herbal. It is earthy at best.

F: Approachable (due to the distinct lack of fresh ingredients)

O: I don't know what Southern Tier expects to make happen with bland malts and hop pellets.

Poured into a tulip glass from a can which was part of a mix pack. Unfortunately the can was date stamped over 2 months from the day I purchased. This is why I try to avoid buying mix packs but we had a group of people coming over and I hadn't had a lot of Southern Tier. If ST reads this you really shouldn't be putting hoppy DIPAs in mix packs that sit on supermarket and big box stores shelves. If affects the quality as well as your reputation.

So while I sure If I had this fresh on tap my experiences would be different but I have to go by what I drank and frankly it was pretty underwhelming. I expect way better from a DIPA. It was off tasting with no distinguishable aroma. Way too bitter than other DIPAs. I will be avoiding this going forward however I do enjoy other ST ales.

Look - poured into a 12 oz tulip glass. Lemon golden in color, cloudy, with a moderate one-and-a-half finger head and good lacing.
Smell - dominated by citrus, complemented with a nice floral note. almost smells like freshly squeezed orange juice with a nice hoppy twist.
Taste - surprisingly clean. the citrus flavors come through, though with much more hoppiness than detected in the smell. bitterness of hops linger for quite some time, leaving a long and complex finish.
Feel - medium bodied, above average carbonation, and a strong brew at 8.2% ABV. Alcohol is very well masked, especially at low temperatures, making this beer very easy to drink.
Overall - a rock solid DIPA that is easy to drink, refreshing, and complex enough to be interesting.

Pours almost clear light yellow with a thick white cap. Good retention and great lacing. Aroma is citrus and pine. Flavor is sweet up front, a touch of honey, a tad malty, some citrus and then bam here come the hops. Nice bitter finish. Feel is on the light side of medium bodied. Overall a nice beer once you get by the first sip which is a bit harsh.

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) can into a custom taster pint glass; canned on 06/26/19.
A: Pours a hazy, caramel amber color with a one finger, off-white head, cap retention, and soapy lacing.
S: Aromas of caramel, lemon, and pine.
T: Semisweet. Flavors definitely follow the nose, leaning more on the caramel. Solid bitterness balanced with flavors and sweetness.
M: Medium bodied with excellent carbonation. A touch boozy, actually.
O: A very drinkable and approachable, if strong, AIIPA.

12 ounce can, canned on 5/6/19. Thanks to my friend Denis for this! Served in a DFH Spiegelau IPA glass, the beer pours a mostly clear gold color with about an inch and a half off-white head that stuck around a while. There's also a lot of lacing. The brew smells like citrusy (grapefruit, lemon peel) hops, pine hops and bready malt. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also the addition of an earthy and a green apple flavor. I think it tastes hoppier than it smells, with the citrusy/grapefruit flavor being strongest to me. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick with a moderate amount of carbonation. I liked this, certainly worth a try if you've never had it before.

12oz can into an IPA glass

Look: Pours a clear amber color with a big, off-white rocky head (Pretty good retention too.) Plenty of beautiful lacing on the way down that sticks to the glass.
Smell: Citrus and apple. Hops upon hops!
Taste: The hops dominate the palate, earthy and dry with some sweet malt on the finish.
Feel: Medium bodied with a sticky, resiny finish.
Overall: My kind of DIPA. Resiny, dry and bitter. I didn't factor cost into the review but it's also super affordable, which is nice.

L: A cloudy gold color. Almost a light tan. .5cm of head.
A: Crisp with striking hops. There is a faint smell of lemon and orange coming off of it.
T: Wow, hops hops and lots of hops. The hops are very heavy and easily the dominant flavor. Even the aftertaste is hops. Once the hop flavor starts to slide away a little, there are flavors of malt, caramel, and a breadiness. The bitterness hangs around for a good long while.
F: It is definitely astringent and bitter from the hops. You can definitely feel the astringency on your gums. The bitterness coats your mouth, but the other flavors do not.
O: It is an IPA, definitely an IPA and nobody will ever mistake it for anything else. I enjoy it, but I don't think I could drink more than one in a row... the bitterness can be overpowering. I think I'd like it more if additional flavors beyond just that of malt and caramel were expressed once the bitterness fades.
