L: Pours amber with moderate head. Opening this bottle and pouring it attracted gnats immediately.

S: Dank oily hops with grapefruit citrus hops on the nose. Promising. Overpowering. The characteristics of the malt and yeast will remain a mystery.

T: Most of the hop flavor is oily, back palate. It tastes far more pungent than it smells. It doesn't really matter what the rest of it tastes like when the hops are so completely dominant. Which is fine. If the hops taste good. They don't. Fried my palate in one swig.

F: The resin as a texture mouthfeel is great, it's the flavor that goes awry. Brewers like Surly, Lupulin, Voodoo, and Melvin make ale with similiar properties and vastly improved flavor.

O: It's not bad but let's set it straight: This isn't a beer you savor and appreciate. However, you may enjoy it if you are taste-deaf. Lucky for you, this IPA causes taste-deafness. I wish I could say something nice, but a gnat is going for a swim in my drink, and it may be awhile before I order, let alone taste, another.

Poured into a tulip glass from a can which was part of a mix pack. Unfortunately the can was date stamped over 2 months from the day I purchased. This is why I try to avoid buying mix packs but we had a group of people coming over and I hadn't had a lot of Southern Tier. If ST reads this you really shouldn't be putting hoppy DIPAs in mix packs that sit on supermarket and big box stores shelves. If affects the quality as well as your reputation.

So while I sure If I had this fresh on tap my experiences would be different but I have to go by what I drank and frankly it was pretty underwhelming. I expect way better from a DIPA. It was off tasting with no distinguishable aroma. Way too bitter than other DIPAs. I will be avoiding this going forward however I do enjoy other ST ales.

Look - poured into a 12 oz tulip glass. Lemon golden in color, cloudy, with a moderate one-and-a-half finger head and good lacing.
Smell - dominated by citrus, complemented with a nice floral note. almost smells like freshly squeezed orange juice with a nice hoppy twist.
Taste - surprisingly clean. the citrus flavors come through, though with much more hoppiness than detected in the smell. bitterness of hops linger for quite some time, leaving a long and complex finish.
Feel - medium bodied, above average carbonation, and a strong brew at 8.2% ABV. Alcohol is very well masked, especially at low temperatures, making this beer very easy to drink.
Overall - a rock solid DIPA that is easy to drink, refreshing, and complex enough to be interesting.

Really good beer, tasty. Nothing too special but it is nice never having to worry about enjoying a beer before opening it. I never have to worry about opening or buying a 2XIPA. Cheers.

Pours almost clear light yellow with a thick white cap. Good retention and great lacing. Aroma is citrus and pine. Flavor is sweet up front, a touch of honey, a tad malty, some citrus and then bam here come the hops. Nice bitter finish. Feel is on the light side of medium bodied. Overall a nice beer once you get by the first sip which is a bit harsh.

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) can into a custom taster pint glass; canned on 06/26/19.
A: Pours a hazy, caramel amber color with a one finger, off-white head, cap retention, and soapy lacing.
S: Aromas of caramel, lemon, and pine.
T: Semisweet. Flavors definitely follow the nose, leaning more on the caramel. Solid bitterness balanced with flavors and sweetness.
M: Medium bodied with excellent carbonation. A touch boozy, actually.
O: A very drinkable and approachable, if strong, AIIPA.

12 ounce can, canned on 5/6/19. Thanks to my friend Denis for this! Served in a DFH Spiegelau IPA glass, the beer pours a mostly clear gold color with about an inch and a half off-white head that stuck around a while. There's also a lot of lacing. The brew smells like citrusy (grapefruit, lemon peel) hops, pine hops and bready malt. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also the addition of an earthy and a green apple flavor. I think it tastes hoppier than it smells, with the citrusy/grapefruit flavor being strongest to me. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick with a moderate amount of carbonation. I liked this, certainly worth a try if you've never had it before.

12oz can into an IPA glass

Look: Pours a clear amber color with a big, off-white rocky head (Pretty good retention too.) Plenty of beautiful lacing on the way down that sticks to the glass.
Smell: Citrus and apple. Hops upon hops!
Taste: The hops dominate the palate, earthy and dry with some sweet malt on the finish.
Feel: Medium bodied with a sticky, resiny finish.
Overall: My kind of DIPA. Resiny, dry and bitter. I didn't factor cost into the review but it's also super affordable, which is nice.

L: A cloudy gold color. Almost a light tan. .5cm of head.
A: Crisp with striking hops. There is a faint smell of lemon and orange coming off of it.
T: Wow, hops hops and lots of hops. The hops are very heavy and easily the dominant flavor. Even the aftertaste is hops. Once the hop flavor starts to slide away a little, there are flavors of malt, caramel, and a breadiness. The bitterness hangs around for a good long while.
F: It is definitely astringent and bitter from the hops. You can definitely feel the astringency on your gums. The bitterness coats your mouth, but the other flavors do not.
O: It is an IPA, definitely an IPA and nobody will ever mistake it for anything else. I enjoy it, but I don't think I could drink more than one in a row... the bitterness can be overpowering. I think I'd like it more if additional flavors beyond just that of malt and caramel were expressed once the bitterness fades.

Pours a deep amber with a dense one inch white head that left very nice lacing. Smells of citrus, grains and some sweet malts. Tastes of tart green apples, grapefruit, grapefruit pith, grains, balancing sweet malts, earthy notes and some oak. Medium bodied and carbonation, dry finish with a lingering bitterness.

Surprised I haven't reviewed this yet since I've been drinking it for at least 8 years.

12 oz. Can DOB: 2/28/19
Opened on 4/17/19

Clear golden & Amber color. High rising white sea foam cap. Dense and thick coverage. Nice lace.

Sweet caramel and oak malty aroma is classic 2xipa. The hops are seriously aronatic with mostly red/tropical fruitiness and musk laden herbs.

The flavor is all hop attack: bitter dry earthiness, high alpha style lupilin acids...then it's boozy, roasted caramel malt, and more dry bitterness in the finish.

A staple of the ole West Coast DIPA.

2XIPA brewed by Southern Tier Brewing Company, with an ABV of 8.20% This American Imperial IPA pours out of a 12oz glass bottle into a pint beer glass. This brew pour has a nice deep golden amber color, with a nice thick white head. There is also a nice amount of lacing to this brew, it sticks to the side of the glass well. The smell is rich with hop bitterness, mixed with lots of earthy grains and malts. Now for the taste, it is Bold with flavors. You first pick up a ton of hop bitterness, but then it smooths out with the earthy grains and malts. There is a nice mild sweetness to this brew as well. So far this is a nice put together IPA. There is nothing overpowering about this brew, it has a super nice balance to it. The body of 2XIPA is a solid medium. I can't get over how smooth this brew goes down. It is really hard to pick up on the 8.20% ABV in this brew. This brew would go nice with dinner or a cool day. The mouth feel is Bold, Rich, Hoppy, Clean, Smooth and Refreshing. Overall I'm going to give 2XIPA a solid 4 out of 5. I would definitely look this brew up again giving the opportunity to. Southern Tier Brewing Company, did a super nice job with American Imperial IPA.

Look: Thin, cream-colored head. Golden brown.
Smell: Some apple, some citrus hop aroma, but not too much.
Taste: The malt comes through as a bit of noodle/spaghetti flavor. Fairly dry. Some lingering, slightly harsh, slightly smoky bitterness.
Feel: Medium-bodied.
Overall: Not a terrible double IPA, but not something I would seek out. It does taste better as it warms up.

11/21/18 of a beer I know I've had before - probably 6-7 years ago, but somehow never reviewed...?

Medium gold and clear-bodied under a finger or two of head in a nonic pint... A throwback to the pre-NEIPA craze, the beer has a relatively balanced profile between pine-like resinousness and soft citrus fruit tones... Moderately bitter, mildly sweet, with subdued carbonation; leaves a light, vaguely fruity shellac on the finish...

Probably ignored more often than not these days with such a vast market for IPAs and hazy beers, this is a decent if unremarkable beer, easily accessible and reasonably priced...

An excellent double IPA in general, however have soured on it recently as it has more of a "hangover" than the others probably due to excessive almost medicinal additives they put in these extra strong IPAs. Good once in a while, but not as a standby.

Agree with headache in a bottle comment. Nice tasting beer, but tried this several times with the same effect. Had 3 pints last night over 3 hours, not a lot by most standards, but boy what an effect. Splitting headache in the morning again. I don't normally post or publicly rate beers, but I think this warning is in order... I've have several 8.2% and higher beers without this after-effect. There must be some ingredient or by-product in this formula that causes the problem...Last night will be my last...

Headache in a bottle. I brew a dry high abv IPA and it is amazing. This makes wonder what they were thinking...I have tried to drink this a few different times thinking maybe I wasnt hydrated but sure enough nothing but a headache. Full of garbage impurities. These hipsters will rate anything high with a over load of hops and a cool logo. They should sell asprine with it.

A special DIPA from the STBC folks, and their only IPA brewed with a single hop (Mosaic) and a special pale malt. My can said 2XSMASH. Fair warning: first two sips might seem a tad underwhelming, but it definitely grows on you. Despite the dearth of hop variety, it's a very complex, rewarding beer. The hops land first, on both nose and palate, but the malt comes in nicely for the coup de grace. At 8.1 or 8.2 % ABV, it's hardly what even I would call sessionable and bears careful monitoring, but if you eat something with it--like Tex-Mex--you should be able to enjoy two or three without garnering a DUI. Of course, enjoying it at home obviates that worry. Unless your Tex-Mex cooking skills are substandard. But there's always takeout.

Tasted from a 16 oz can bought in Central NY. Clear straw color; thick rocky head.inviting aroma is a mix of bready, sweet malt and citrusy hops. Flavors follow the aromas and are clean, fresh and tasty. Medium body; low to moderate carbonation. Massive hops bitterness is counterbalanced by a low malt sweetness that fades to a dry finish. This is a well-put-together, enjoyable DIPA that hits all the right notes.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Clear golden amber pour with 1.5 fingers of white head. Falls fast with a nice rim of sticky lacing.

S: Grains and pine... mild citrus.

T/F: Light toasted grains and caramel malts. Sweet... balanced by a nice bitter hop profile. Tending towards evergreen/pine and herbal. Very light citrus notes towards the finish. Mostly balanced... medium bodied and sticky on the tongue.

O: A solid DIPA if not spectacular. Easy drinking... balanced and with good bitterness. Not one I'd seek out but would drink it again.

Bottled on 10/10/17 (6mo. old...yikes!). Aroma is definitely stale hops. Probalby not fair to this beer. Taste is respectable, well balanced and sweet with moderate bitter. Seems decent enough. Would like to revisit when I find it fresh.

Had a pint of this on tap at 716 in Buffalo. Not a bad beer but also nothing special. My 2nd Southern Tier of the night & I've had a couple before; after this one I'm convinced S.T. can make some ok beer but at the same time they're not doing any great work craft-wise. This one has some definite hop flavour but is flawed by being overly malty and somewhat bitter despite correctly serving the DIPA name and having a nice hint of spice in the flavour department.
