Southern Tier’s 2XHAZE is an absolute flavor bomb. Hazy golden orange, with a soft body and booming with tropical flavor, this Double IPA is smooth and beguiling. The supreme drinkability of 2X beers will have you in awe as you keep up with their daring 8.2% ABV. Now you too, have The 2X Factor.

2XHAZE is brewed to bold strength with an absurd amount of hops, three times a standard IPA, and then dry-hopped relentlessly on four different days. Now that’s the 2X Factor.

With the description in the name, do you really have to be reminded of its hazy appearance? Other than that, there's plenty of citrus and tropical fruit in the aroma. Some graininess shows up in the flavor but the hops still dominate. Zesty, juicy finish. Well carbonated, medium bodied mouthfeel.

2X Haze from Southern Tier Brewing. 12 fl oz bottle from mixed 12-pack Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA, 09/05/23. Reviewed 23/05/23 (Review 3110). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Label stamped “BESTBY 04/25/23”. Stored on room temperature pallet at store, $12 (Including tax)/12 pack. Stored at 34 degrees at home. Served at 50.5 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 56.6 degrees F.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Pale Straw (SRM 2), hazy.
Body – Pale Gold (SRM 4), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear lite, same. Some sediment remains in the bottle, so I guess I didn’t roll it enough.
Head: Average (Maximum 1.7 cm, aggressive center pour), white smoke, high density, quickly diminishing, reducing to a 0.5 mm crown and a thin partial cap.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 3.75 – Tropical and citrus fruity. No malt, no yeast. No ethanol (8.2 % ABV as marked on the label).
Flavor – 3.75 – Begins slightly sweet with grapefruit and pineapple, maybe some guava in the background. No malt, no yeast. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. No gastric warming. Ends dry with some cleaning solvent aftertastes.
Palate – 4 – Medium; watery; lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4 Not too bad for a month past outdate and a dollar a bottle.

I like this beer a lot. My new favorite hazy ipa from southern tier. The alcohol is there enough to taste it but not over boozy plus it’s not rich or thick. Nice medium body. Very tasty. I want rate this a 4.5 because it’s so tasty but it is just southern tier. Don’t hesitate buying this Justin.

Look - pale yellow, hazy, small head - not much lacing at the end of this review
Smell - bready, citrus, lemon, orange
Taste - juicy, orange, citrus pith, hoppy
Feel - prickly mouthfeel, well carbonated, juicy, hoppy, dry sticky finish
Overall - I'll agree with many that this is a very good brew that goes down easy. Got a 6 pack as a Christmas gift so gotta thank my brother in law for this one. He lost his wallet at the Parliament House once but that's a story for a different time. Tip this one back and enjoy while jamming to Flashlight by Parliament.

Notes via stream of consciousness: A very hazy golden-orange body is capped by a two finger wide head of white foam. The aroma is fruity with notes of grapefruit, apple, orange, and sweet berries over a sweetish and bready malt base. Surprisingly the head has already dropped quite a bit and there's not a whole lot of lacing left behind. I know that alcohol tends to kill head retention and lacing but this is only 8.2% ABV. I should also point out that I don't really get alcohol in the nose; there's a little bit but certainly no more than you'd expect from a strong beer. The flavor is fuller than the nose let's on and it's sweetish and bready with some minor oat flavor. I'm not finding any wheat but I wouldn't be surprised if there's some in there. The hops are at least partially Mosaic, and I love the sweet berry-like flavor that it has. There's some orange, peach, grapefruit, mango, and guava as well. Hell, I'm sure if you dig a little deeper there's even more than that. It's not the brightest aroma or flavor that I've had in a hazy DIPA but it's quite pleasant. Back to the alcohol, there's more in the flavor than the aroma, but again, it's not overt. It's actually needed to help dry it in the finish as there's not a whole lot of bitterness at all. It's harder for me to tell in a double IPA but I'm going to guess that this is less than 30 IBU which I consider to be the lower threshold depending on the amount of residual sugar. Still, it somehow works in the end. I think a second serving might be a bit much but I doubt that anyone's going to be plowing through these at 8.2%. In the mouth it's medium bodied and lightly dextrinous. A fine-bubbled and moderate carbonation lends a gentle caress to the tongue before it warms to become smoother. It's not the best 'heavy protein' DIPA I've come across but it's not bad, and with that said it's really only the lack of head retention and lacing that brings it down. A better balance and mouthfeel would be great as well but it is what it is.

Hazy and straw gold in color. Short-lived 2-finger head with sad, sad lacing. Smells pineappley. It's fine. Tastes sweet and also pineappley. Some dry floral hops on the back end. Inoffensive. Heavier body and less carbonation than I'd prefer for this one. If it was light and bubbly it would better suit the flavor profile and make up for its failure to impress. As it stands, it's... fine. A bit of a drag to drink.
